Nope, but I've read the page on this website about FW. The page basically makes it sound like it was good, but then lost a lot of quality the minute it went Darker and Edgier.
Is that what happened, or is it just misleading?
Oh, Equestria, we stand on guard for thee!Funky ran regularly in my local newspaper when I was growing up, but that was in the '70s. Imagine my surprise and consternation upon finding out what the gang had been up to since high school.

The old strip was occasionally amusing—it wasn't hackwork or anything—but it was pretty toothless. If Batiuk hadn't contracted Cerebus Syndrome, I doubt that FW would've been very memorable, or even survived the 20th century.

I found an old Funky book from the 80s that was pretty funny.
My high school used to have a Funky strip painted on the wall by the band classroom. It was a gag where a character says that he's afraid to join band because he's heard that a lot of musicians tend to go crazy, and another character says "Trust me, you're perfectly safe!"

I don't get Funky Winkerbean in my newspaper, but I can't help but wonder if maybe it's just as well that I don't.
I mean, okay, so it started out as light-hearted comedy, then it turned into dark and edgy drama full of death and suffering. Sure, the teenagers who became adults had kids of their own, but the cartoonist would rather focus on the adults than the kids.
I just sit there and wonder, "What happened? What happened that would make the guy turn around and suddenly indulge in loads of Angst and bleakness?" <Baffled>
