You wouldn't believe this, but Dagwood was a rich, high-class young man at one time, and Blondie was a flapper lady. Dagwood got disowned by his family because he wanted to marry her, and she wasn't in the same class he was in. This actually helps in explaining a number of running gags in the strip.
I don't think Dagwood's family has been brought up in years. Maybe all of them died offscreen some time ago!
