@ Ambar: al-Massih is...interesting; I can see where you got the whole Mance Rayder aspect, though he seems to have some far less malevolent aspects in common with the Red Priestess (worshipping an obscure god, powers given to them by said god, etc). Personality-wise, you really have the "prophet who wants to unite and save the people" vibe going on with him. I like the idea that he doesn't force or push his beliefs onto others, not even through subtle manipulations. His requirements are perfectly logical and reasonable for being allowed to join his army, and the motivations—not dying in a desert wasteland while being cut off from what I'm assuming is fertile land—is again very understandable.

Where things get a little...messy is al-Massih's Compelling Voice. It is usually the tool of villains of Anti-Hero characters, but that isn't really the issue. The problem is that you don't seem to have set limits on its usage and power, or at least it appears that you haven't. If everyone is moved by his words automatically, does that mean they are compelled to join his cause? Or is it merely that they give weight to his position whereas they would have just dismissed the "crazy desert-dweller" before? If it is the former, then it is sort of a problem, because it makes the playing field far too uneven, and I would dare say robs other characters of their agency in the face of such power.

If the latter, then by all means it's actually a pretty good ability, and it would go a long way towards explaining why he has gathered such a fearsome force. It would also give you a chance to show how al-Massih negotiates and persuades—-after all, just because someone is magically forced to lend you their ear, doesn't mean they will do what you want.

[up]Sorry, forgot about yours.

Now, for my feelings on John. I suppose the age increase in the Gaia warrior mode refers to his physical body being aged 7 years instead of his mental age. He sounds like a typical teenager that you find in the Youtube comment section, and his attempts in breaking the dreams of others make him sounds like a major dick. Remember, {{Freudian Excuses} }don' t justify everything, and the last thing you want is a unlikable protagonist. His age would make him seem more whiny than mature, unless you want him to Wise Beyond Their Years.I don't know what your story is about, but from what I can gather from your story, it is probably about protecting nature or something.

[up]Ah. Thanks actually I could make him more along the lines like daria in personality and be quite wise like a little adult. Though honestly I can't figure out how he become the cynical little deadpan snarker without resorting to the whole abusive parent trope or changing the core of his hippie mom and business father.

[up]Doesn't take much for a teenager to be a cynical jerk, and if you intend for him to be more mature than the average teenager, just expose him to some examples of people failing their dreams or giving up, ending up having a really crappy life as a result of following them. Having actual examples backing up their world view is necessary. If his father is a businessman, just have him say about his dreams are pointless and justify his behavior as wanting his son to succeed his business.

Have his parents argue after the incident over their son's reckless action, maybe end it with a divorce if they aren't significant characters or their marriage isn't important to the story, as long as it ends with the father trying to control his childhood. Combine his isolation along with the father teaching him the harshness of reality, since he wouldn't have anyone to tell him otherwise.

Now for a new character for the series which i still can't figure out a name for. She was suppose to be an Romantic False Lead for Hideaki, but I decided to give her a bigger role and more development.

Name: Mireille Amice Mercier

Age: 18

Appearance: Mireille has brown eyes and waist-length brown hair tied in a braid. She stands at 5'2", with slender and modest figure, with considerably long legs. She wears a woolen tunic and boots.

Personality: Mireille is an independent, friendly, humorous, sensitive, caring and kind. She comes across as naive and clueless to many, but she can be quite mature and perceptive of others. She view herself as quite normal, admiring those she believes as noble heroes, which she believe Hideaki to be one. She is quite impulsive and headstrong when protecting her friends, standing up to nobles who could possibly order her death anytime they want, This behavior lessens as she matures. While she originally had an idealistic outlook of life, wanting to have an exciting life, she starts to appreciate her original, average life where everyone was happy.

Abilities: Outside of a charm that is able to keep herself from harm, she lacks magical abilities. She is good in unarmed combat, combining her excellent reflexes and light figure to outmaneuver her enemies and subdue them. She uses small knives as weapons, but uses them mostly as a threat rather than killing. She primarily uses her legs and aim for her opponents vitals to quickly incapacitate enemies.

Weakness: As most enemies on the battlefield are magically powered, she is quite useless as a soldier. Her more gentle nature causes her to hesitate to kill, which gives an opening to her opponent. Her smaller frame means she can't deal much damage during battle.

Goal and motivation: While originally wanted an exciting life due to her own mediocre one, she starts the stability and simplicity of her old life.

Role in story: The fact that she a Romantic False Lead doesn't change, but I am fleshing out her relationship with Hideaki and her character, giving them an arc to show how exactly their relationship fails and contrasting with Hideaki's growing ambition and ruthlessness, putting her sometimes in the limelight to show her perspective of events.

Backstory: As said before, her life is pretty mediocre, being a waitress at a alehouse owned by her parents. Her mother, however, was previously an assassin for the queen before her family was killed off to keep it a secret, with her escaping by changing her name and taken in by Mireille's father. She is also the reincarnation of the friend who betrayed Hideaki. Isabella knows this, but she doesn't tell Hideaki because they are in a relationship, but she is cautious of her and is prepared to kill her if she shows signs of betraying Hideaki(the friend was a guy, but reincarnation doesn't give you the same gender everytime)

Relevant tropes: Badass Adorable: She is considered quite cute by her friends, and she is quite strong, though pales in comparison to the powerhouses of my series.

Attack Reflector: The charm creates an invisible barrier that reflects attacks.

{{Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny!}}: She gets distracted by things easily.

Character Development: She goes from an cheerful but naive girl to a more solemn and mature personality.

Killing Intent: Due to her mother's fighting style emphasizes on quickly subduing and killing the enemy, her lack of this means she is quite ineffective in fighting.

Nice Girl: The most affectionate, kind-hearted and polite of Hideaki's companions, which is what Hideaki was attracted to.

Break the Cutie: She loses her parents, her brother is working for the enemy, have to see countless deaths during the coup that caused the former events and Hideaki's increasing ruthlessness along with the worsening of their relationship. Yeah, I wasn't really kind when dealing with her.

Hates Being Alone: After losing her family either by death or them leaving her, she hates being left alone by anyone.

I Just Want to Be Normal: After character Development.

Kick Chick: She primarily uses kicks to maintain range and increase damage.

She-Fu

{{She's Got Legs}}: She has long pretty legs which she uses for combat.

Oh, that sinking feeling when you want to have a life of adventure and then realize just how grueling it can be[lol]. Mireille seems a decent enough character, if a little...I'm not sure, ordinary maybe, compared to your others. There's nothing lacking in Mireille herself but as you mentioned, she is overshadowed by the seemingly-legendary feats and powers of the other people in this story. Her family history is interesting; without knowing all the story's world and plot, I do think it definitely gives her mother points for being able to hide so well and raise a child, even if her family was killed. Mireille's powerset isn't half bad, though I'm curious about what the abilities of her Attack Reflector charm are—does it only work on magical or projectile attacks, or can physical blows be reflected as well? Is there a limit to how much it can block before it is nullified/destroyed? I'm not really sure what to say about the reincarnation part of the story—I'm not a fan of that particular trope, so I honestly can't say anything much about it. However I do find it interesting that Isabella knows about it and has made plans to counteract a possible betrayal. She is the pirate woman who made a contract with the ocean spirit, correct? Did her spirit master/contractor tell her about this reincarnation, because it seems...odd that she would just know about it without any context.

[up]No, she's Hideaki's past wife whose spirit is possessing his sword. She knows because she is a master of magic and is able to read the past selves of other souls, which was how she found Hideaki. The charm reflects all type of damage, but attacks powerful enough to kill her will destroy it.

I'm not sure if I should put fan characters here, but I'll give it a shot.

Name: Wonder Nova

Age: Same age as Twilight, possibly older (not sure how the age thing in MLP works)

Personality: He's very snarky, stubborn, and impatient, and isn't afraid to talk back to a Princess. He can be a jerk, but only when someone is talking about friendship and learning. However, he does have a soft spot for Amy the dragon, and their pet fruit bat Kiwi.

Abilities: He has this sword grip he can put in his horn and make a blade out of his magic, creating a magic blade. But his ability signified by his cutie mark is that he's able to guide himself using the stars as compass, especially Polaris, the northern star.

Weaknesses: He prefers to leap before he looks, and is focused on attacking the enemy instead of strategizing. That would result in him getting beaten as fast as he tries to attack.

Goals: At the beginning of his journey, he wants to create his own magic without needing the help of teachers as a way to survive.

Motivation: His motivation is how he sees Princesses as just noble beings who do nothing but sit around all day.

Role in the story: He's the main focus of my stories that feature him. When he isn't the focus he'd often get crack a snarky joke or when the Mane 6 fight a threat, he's always the one to strike first.

Backstory: Let's first start off with how he got his cutie mark. One fateful night when he and his parents were getting fresh fruits from the forests, they got chased by Timberwolves and when they made a sharp turn, Nova flew out of the cart. It seemed that all hope was lost, as he was surrounded by nocturnal creatures in a dark environment, until the stars started glowing brighter than before, and one star (the Polaris star) while smaller than the moon, was the biggest of all of the stars. Nova then decides to follow the star, until he reunites with his parents. When Nova woke up the next day, he finds that he got his cutie mark. However, his attitude at school leaves a lot to be desired. Nova was a bit of troublemaker when he was a just a little colt, and would often pull pranks on other students, so he had a personal tutor named Tenebrae, who taught him some "amazing" spells and the possibilities of Unicorns. He even told Nova about that event when all of the stars glowed that saved Nova's life. That event is known as the Night of the Stars which a thousand years ago was meant to be held by Princess Luna, but after she decided to turn into Nightmare Moon, Celestia decides to make it as a way that she still cares about Luna. The event only happens once every 5 years. When a monster attacked the school, Tenebrae used a forbidden spell to destroy the monster and that got him fired and banished from Canterlot. Nova then finds Tenebrae's now abandoned house and finds a message where Tenebrae is sent south but isn't allowed to explicitly say where he is. So Nova decides to run away, knowing that any other teacher would never teach him the same way Tenebrae would, as well as the fact that the spell had saved Nova. So he traveled to the badlands thinking that Tenebrae would be there, and instead he was taken in by a dragon family that already has 5 baby dragons. Nova offered to protect them, and one of the baby dragons, Amethyst aka Amy, likes Nova the most and wants to stay with him when he travels, because she wants to learn about the outside world. So Nova decides to try to find a place in a Pony Town where Nova can get a job for his own place while Amy is hidden in a basket that Nova has to carry around. While on the way they come across an injured Fruit Bat and decides to heal it, and keep it as a pet named Kiwi, because of his brown fur and light green highlights. Nova then sees a monster that attacks Ponyville and fights it off leading into the events of my story where he meets Twilight Sparkle, and incidentally the rest of the mane 6.

[up] Edit: Oops. Forgot to comment. I don't really know much about the MLP universe (besides Discord) but I agree with Eagal - your backstory needs some trimming and thinning out, especially considering this is a fan character.

Name: Aenlen Once Noble

Age: A couple hundred years. Physically around 27.

Personality: Aenlen Once Noble is ruthless, efficient and outwardly cold and distant. More than that, however, his undead state has left him unable to feel any form of joy or happiness beyond a dull satisfaction. Make no mistake, however, he's no sociopath - just a constantly depressed cynic. He does care about certain people and ideals very deeply and very secretly. It's simply that no positive feelings ever comes from his caring. Because of this, he attempts to forcefully detach himself from worldly concerns. In order to stave off his near constant depression, he clings not to people or things, but to the memory of pre-existing people or things. Never one to cope easily with change, he views immortality as a curse, one he inflicted upon himself in his dying moments to accomplish one final mission; ensuring the destruction of the man who killed him, an Omnicidal Maniac Lich. He knows that fulfilling his revenge will not bring him happiness, but believes it will at least allow him to do one last service to the man he used to be.

Abilities: Aenlen Once Noble's undead state has left him incredibly strong, as like most undead, his body is constantly exerting its maximum adrenaline-fueled strength. In addition, he is Made of Iron and has a Healing Factor. Lastly, Once Noble has a keen tactical mid and relatively in depth knowledge of military strategy and no small degree of intelligence.

Weaknesses: Aenlens's weaknesses are psychological; they come from his lack of ability to adapt to change or novelty, as well as his crushing despair. Despite his knowledge of combat strategy and noble social upbringing, he is relatively easily taken aback by new ideas. This is not innately to his immortality, but rather due to a problem with him as an individual; he's always looking to the past, forgetting that things CAN change. It rather goes without saying that being constantly depressed and negative has its downsides as well.

Goals: Once Noble wants to defend what he cares about; his friends and the world at large. He's forcefully ridden himself of more small-scale goals, knowing that every failure is more pain, and every success is no joy.

Motivation: Back when he was still human, Aenlen Once Noble damned himself to undeath and sacrificed his joy because he felt he was needed. In truth, he's become so cynical he doesn't even always believe the world is worth saving anymore. He pursues his goals to honor a time when he was, at least in his time, a better man.

Role in the story: Anti-Hero protagonist

Backstory: Aenlen was born a nobleman and pursued knighthood at a young age, desiring to do good in the world like the heroes of legend. He excelled in sword-fighting and tactics, and his sense of honor was evident even then. As he aged and experienced the suffering of those less fortunate, however, his optimism faded. Noting that his fellows did little to actually help those around him, he left in bitter disenfranchisement. Thus, Aenlen was declared Once Noble, a title rather self-evident in its nature. For a while, he became a vigilante of sorts, until he got wind of an assassination attempt, led by Grand Lich Alivus II, a man who had implanted his disguised self within the nobility. He returned to his home in an attempt to raise an army, but was met with incredulity and sometimes outright hostility from the inhabitants of his nation. Eventually, he came to an epiphany; that few of the other knights actually cared enough to do anything besides drink and seek glory. Aenlen Once Noble and a few others did attempt to bring to light Alivus' plan, succeeded, managing to expose the Lich. Despite this, the Alivus won the ensuing battle and Once Noble was slain by the lich's own hand. Yet sometimes, when a man is willing to give more than his life for his cause, death allows him to return, if fractured. And so return Once Noble did, cold and joyless, yet ever more dedicated.

Relevant Tropes:

Anti-Hero Both Unscrupulous Hero and Knight in Sour Armor

Arch-Enemy To Alivus II, obviously. Also overlaps a little with UnknownNemesis, as Alivus has had so many plans over the years that he finds it hard to remember who Once Noble even his, besides some vague awareness that he might have killed him once.

Badass Definitely.

Badass Bass has a very deep voice, a combination of natural and undeath.

Four-Star Badass Is a military commander, perhaps not officially, but functionally.

Black Knight Evokes this imagery and theme.

Blessed with Suck and Cursed with Awesome Undeath, for him.

Broken Bird Was Badass before he was broken, but fits this to a T otherwise.

Cool Sword Wields one, a black [[BFS zweihander]] that has been in his family for generations.

Deadpan Snarker Has many moments of this, as it helps him dull the pain of being undead, if momentarily.

Death Seeker More or less what he is at this point.

The Dreaded Considered this by most, due to his image and demeanor. Ironically not by those he hunts, however.

Determinator He sold his joy for a chance to will himself back to life.

Fatal Flaw His refusal to acknowledge that the world might not need HIM.

Genre Savvy Smart and pragmatic enough to realize obvious heroic pitfalls and avoid them

Glowing Eyes of Doom and Red Eyes, Take Warning

Face–Heel Turn Downplayed. Goes from a brief stint as a straight hero, down the levels of Anti-Hero.

Last Dance His entire quest gives of the vibe of an extended one.

Lightning Bruiser In combat

One-Man Army Downplayed, but there.

Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe Heavily HEAVILY downplayed, but does speak more archaically than most others. Justified by his old age.

Wow, this thread has been dead for a week, so might as well liven it up a bit. As for Aenlen, a few questions. Are there others like him, considering there should be more than one guy willing sacrifice everything for their cause? Why would his family allow him to keep a sword that seems to be a family heirloom if he isn't a noble anymore, since I assume he would be denounced. What are his limits as an undead? Can he be killed? Can he regenerate from a single cell? How unscrupulous is he? Does he still have boundaries he won't cross?

1. Indeed, he's not the only one. Granted, they are rather rare, as they have to be willing to live a Fate Worse than Death in order to accomplish their goals.

2. Good question. When Aenlen was first denounced, he had the sword on his person. Rather than submitting to punishment, he fled, stealing the sword. Now that his family is long dead, he keeps it as a reminder of simpler days.

3. As an undead, his limits are higher than those of a normal human, but they do still exist. His skin is tough, his stamina endless and he has no need for his blood or organs to function. He can regenerate insofar as wounds closing at an accelerated rate, but doing so forms ugly scars. Likewise, he can have his limbs reattached once severed and the connection will begin to regrow. If his body is destroyed beyond reason, however, he is rendered dead. Think the Terminator, not Wolverine.

4. Yes, there are boundaries he won't cross. He has a code of sorts, formed in part by his still-existent conscious, and in part in homage to his former self. He will never cause more harm than is necessary to achieve the highest likeliness of success. He refuses to break an oath to one he deems worthy and honorable (to anyone else, though, no such luck). He will not cause the death of an unwilling friend (not ally, but friend; the difference is important), by action or inaction unless refusing to do so would result in the death of more friends. Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, he will not condemn another to undeath or a similar fate. Any and all undead under his command were not animated by him, nor by any under his influence.

[up][up][up] Seems pretty interesting. I would probably like reading about somebody like that. Seems a lot like somebody who's honestly only in it to see if there is a point, not for some lofty goal. I'd love to read/see the execution!

Name: Boris Volkov

Age: 24

Personality: Mildly amused to mildly perturbed. As The Stoic, he's not too keen on showing any emotion. He is partially based off of the Northernlion model of cynical optimism, in that he recognizes the difficulties and complexities of the situation, and isn't surprised when bad things occur, but still maintains a hopeful attitude.

Abilities: To sum it up quickly, Awesomeness by Analysis. He was a highschool drop-out, but he had always excelled at physics. With the knowledge he gained and some research, he managed to learn ballistics and the complexities of gunsmithing. After some practice, he became a crack shot as well. He still has some connections in the underworld(the criminal one, not the metaphysical one). He also has the power of Clap Your Hands If You Believe. In the story he is in spirits, at least in part, work off of the power of belief. He has devoted so much of his life to ballistics and small arms that he actually can hurt ethereal beings with your normal, every-day, non-enchanted bullets, although not to the extent of damage you might expect a bullet to do. He's also a polyglot due to still completing his language courses and his travels.

Weaknesses: Boris still lives in fear of Mafiya retaliation. Because of this, he near-constantly hides the bottom half of his face with a scarf while he is out, which pretty much bars him altogether from formal events. He is also easily identifiable as long as he has his shirt off or his arms exposed because of his many gang tatoos. He is socially awkward and has difficulties with his love-life due to reflexively hiding his sexuality for so many years. He sometimes experiences PTSD-like attacks, like hitting the deck and hiding because of the loud noise of a firework, and because of Rule of Drama this will always happen in the middle of a socially important situation.

Goals: To one day, be at peace and have a family. Just him, his husband, a kid, a shooting range and some guns.

Motivation: He is tired of fear and tired of pain and tired of running. He's nearly apathetic at the start of the series; his arc is about learning to accept yourself while also accepting that sometimes you need some turmoil and excitement.

Role in the Story: He's The Big Guy, first and foremost, alongside being a Genius Bruiser. He is the heavy firepower of the team, and is the mentor to two other characters when it comes to weaponry. He also is excellent at translating, which comes in handy on more than one occasion. He sometimes will bail other characters out of legally comprimising situations, either through bribes, knowledge of the legal system or bluffing.

Backstory: He sold his skills to The Mafiya, supplying them with ghost guns and helping out with the odd drug run or racketeering operation. However, he was caught in a sting operation by Russian police due to his own incompetence, and while he managed to get off with no violent crimes, he was convicted on charges of "gay propoganda"(Homosexuality is still a very taboo subject in Russia, if you didn't know). Knowing that the Mafiya doesn't take kindly to people who are incompetent, he planned his escape from prison and Russia. This led to a series of escapes, fire-fights and vehicular chases across Europe before Boris finally manage to escape to America.

Relevant Tropes:

Husky Russkie: Subverted, hard. He is quiet, soft-spoken and intelligent.

Heart Is an Awesome Power: He knows a lot about Finland, as he hid there for the longest time in his travels. This comes in handy when a Finnish demon shows up.

Shout-Out: A shot of his desktop would show many unrecognizable icons, with the exception of one. It is the icon for Enter The Gungeon.

Russian Guy Suffers Most: Played with. He went through a lot, but isn't The Eeyore but is now almost certainly the most consistently happy in the series.

Mother Russia Makes You Strong

Scarf of Asskicking: Played with. As a Combat Pragmatist his scarf is always tucked in.

Combat Pragmatist: Comes with the territory of being a former memeber of The Mafiya.

Cold Ham: Rarely. See Pre-Asskicking One-Liner

Pre-Asskicking One-Liner: "Seex boolets. Seeven men. Easy." and "Eye will take you to some secluded place, and I will keel you. Ther is no fight. I take you to the place, and keel you."

Occult Detective: His roomates get him into the buisness.

Cluster F-Bomb: In Russian.

The Mafiya

Ruthless Foreign Gangsters

Guns Do Not Work That Way: Averted, he follows most of the rules of gun safety, with the rare exception due to his criminal activities.

Gangsta Style: He uses this with automatic weaponry as an actual advantage.

Sawed-Off Shotgun: He used to produce weapons like that for a living, and still keeps a few around.

Chekhov'sGun: He keeps a literal one in the form of an AK-47.
