You get led into the Hall of Fame and are told to put your pokemon into the machine to register them. When you do, they kill you and steal your pokemon.
Post game events are the player character's Dying Dream.

The player is killed after winning the tournament and the post-game is a looping purgatory with small changes. This is why everyone in the elite 4 acts like you never beat them before.
