Recon managed to keep his head cool, even as he dropped his pancor inside the car, desperately used one hand to try and grab the spider on his head while drawing his pistol to shoot the second one that was heading for Red.

"Shevon, say there were two hundred left alive after they stopped attacking. Now, in half a year, how many more of themselves could they make?"

"Gun it!" Max shouted. "We can take care of these little ones, brake and we get hit by the big ones!"

He let go of his rifle to let the sling catch it, and upholstered his right hatchet, gripping it tightly in that hand. With his left hand holding on to the jeep just in case of sudden movements, he swept the small axe at the spider on the back left of the jeep.

Molly grabbed at Recon 's wrist, "The last thing he needs is to be startled. And if we break for a minute we might knock that thing off the hood," She said as she continued to stab at the spider.

Recon thought for a second, then nodded. He then devoted his attention to getting the small spider off his helmet.

"Yeah bitch! Get some...Ohshitshitshitshitshit..." Red's celebration at running over some of the smaller spiders turned into a bit of fear as the rest started landing on the Jeep. He didn't brake but instead starting swerving wildly, hoping to throw the spiders. With his limited vision, he also tried to drive anywhere where there was a low clearing.

"What do you think I am, some kind of expert on giant spiders? I haven't a Goddamn clue. I hear they still hatch by the boatload but not as many as normal, little spiders" Shevon said over the radio in response to Recon. "Try asking Lisa" she suggested.

Molly's stab at the giant spider on the floor of the bed went as planned, killing it. But when she tried to stab at the one at Red's window, it recoiled back to keep away, preventing the kill. It was a good thing that Molly then stopped Recon from shooting at it, as sitting in the passenger seat next to Red, shooting at something through Red's window involved shooting the muzzle flash directly in front of the former boxer's face; not a good idea overall, even while he wasn't driving.

With his free hand, Recon was able to push the spider above him further up, away from his head, but the little bugger's movement made keeping a grip on it difficult. It suddenly moved back and to one side out of his grip, rotated slightly and lunged its head again, this time at his arm. The fangs slipped just under the protective pad and sunk into the side of his arm, like someone had stabbed him with a couple of pens. On the bright side, the spider wasn't really moving now.

Max's swing at the spider on the back left of the jeep clipped its front pair of legs in half, and the sudden loss of limbs caused the spider to lose grip on the jeep and fall. It tumbled across the ground forcefully, which finished it off.

As for Red, there simply was no low clearings to drive under here; they had burnt down pretty much everything nearby, and before that it was a fairly average street. (Besides, given their standing profiles, a low clearing would stand a much larger threat to Molly and Max in the back than it would any giant spiders on the jeep.) His swerving, while doing nothing to really deter the spider out his window or the one attacking Recon, did momentarily make the blocking of his vision even worse as the larger spider body slid to the left in front of him; but then his view was cleared when he swerved the other way, sliding the body off the right side entirely.

The swerving also threw Molly and Max from side to side in the back, since they didn't exactly have seats; but Max was ready and thus had no problem, and thankfully Molly had been right near the center at the time he started, so she didn't fall out.

To their right, another larger spider came rushing out of a burnt building, rushing to catch the jeep and just barely missing, due to their speed. A decent handful more of the smaller ones likewise came rushing out from both sides, but made attempts to leap on the jeep. One of them misjudged the jump extremely poorly, and ended up going under one of the wheels, squashed instantly. Three more simply misjudged and landed short, then tried to go running after the jeep fruitlessly. Four however made landings on the jeep; one placed in almost the exact spot Max had just cleared; the second landed in the bed behind him and Molly, and lunged for Molly, aiming to bite her leg; the third landed pretty much on the left front headlight, and started scrambling to get up on the hood; the fourth landed on the hood, in front of Recon, then lunged diagonally towards Red through the broken windshield, aiming for his head/neck area.

On the plus side for the group, given how much distance was now between them and the edge of town, there probably wouldn't be any more spiders catching them before they got out. They had also nearly caught up with Gray and Dusk.

Behind the jeep, Lisa still couldn't catch up, but did pass over the next four spiders behind them and again yelled down at them. Once again, two of the smaller spiders stopped and turned on each other; the larger one, before it got to them, had the smaller spider from the last group start to pass under it since it was faster. Started to, because as soon as it was under its face, the larger spider suddenly slammed down on it, both biting into it and partially squashing it; either way, the smaller spider was dead.

Farther behind them, the larger spider from the first group, done biting into one of its two victims, then released the other only to bite into it, killing it as well. The group of about twenty spiders then started passing by it, and it let go of the smaller spider's corpse and lunged for one of its fellow large brethren. The group subsequently turned on it, and being outnumbered 20 to 1, the results were quick and messy, with the spider being literally ripped apart limb from limb.

Red saw the spider about to lunge for him and was forced to brake the Jeep - if only for a second. After all, he couldn't drive while getting his head ripped off. With his focus now entirely on the spider lunging for him, Red drew his knuckleduster-enhanced fist back and socked the spider right in its ugly eight eyed face.

Recon took his pistol and put it against the unmoving spider on his arm. Being careful not to shoot his own arm as well, he pulled the trigger to kill the spider before turning around and firing at the spider in the back near Molly.

With his other hand, he drew his other gun and fired point-blank at the one that Red was dealing with.

"Red, hit the gas, we'll keep 'em off you!" Max said, turning around when the jeep started to slow. He held his breath as Recon fired, and swore under his breath as his knuckles tightened their grip on the jeep, while his other hand kept the axe up. If Red and Recon's attacks didn't finish the job, he'd swing his axe in once the bullets stopped flying. Otherwise he'd just swear.

Molly slashed at the spider behind her, flinching back as Recon shot at it, she stabbed at the creature leaping at Recon, she took careful aim at the newest large spider and released an arrow at one of it's large eyes.

Braking the jeep of course jolted its momentum, whereas everything in the jeep kept the same momentum they had, namely the spiders. The one lunging for Red was thrown forward to the front of the hood, making both its lunge and Red's punch miss. The one on the headlight was thrown off, and almost immediately squashed under the wheel. The spider climbing on Red's window was also thrown off the jeep, but landed clear of the wheels and scrambled back to its feet a few moments later. The one on the side near Max was thrown forward but managed to get another grip on the jeep, just behind the driver's side window. And finally the one in the back had what was meant to be a biting lunge towards Molly accidentally turn into a headbutting tackle to her stomach, which didn't really do anything to her.

The only spider that hadn't really moved when the jeep braked was the one anchoring itself to Recon's arm via its teeth. One shot to the underside of its head, going up through it, and it was dead. Molly's stab at the spider that had basically just tackled her with one of her arrows killed it in short order; Recon's follow-up shot, all things considered, accomplished nothing but make a mess in the back of the jeep and singe part of Molly's shirt with the muzzle blast. Recon's shot with his other pistol at the other spider missed just above it due to the jostling movements of the jeep.

Molly then switching to her bow and firing at the latest large spider got it in one of its smaller side eyes, just missing her target but accomplishing the same thing. It was just about finished with the smaller spider it had killed when the arrow hit it, making it suddenly rear up in pain, letting out a deeper screech. The two smaller spiders in front of it kept up their battle, until one of them overpowered the other and forced its fangs into the other's head, killing it. As it turned to face the larger one, the other group of spiders had caught up to their position, once again about to move past, still pursuing the jeep. The smaller spider lunged for one of its brethren, as the larger one suddenly stopped caring about the arrow in its eye and did the same. As before, them being significantly outnumbered, they were dealt with in short order.

Of the two spiders now remaining on the jeep, the one on the hood screeched, moved forward again, and got an axe in its brain for its trouble, courtesy of Max, since he had been waiting in case Red and Recons' attacks failed. The other clambered up the side to right next to Max, since the firefighter was now leaning over the top bar in order to have delivered the axe blow. Before the spider could do anything to him though, a revolver shot hit it in the side, killing it and taking it off the jeep.

Lisa, having finally caught up since Red hit the brake for a moment, then landed in the back of the jeep behind Max, her wings already disappearing into her back once more. "About time you guys slowed down a sec. So, it's the sheriff's plan, right?" Lisa asked, turning around to aim her revolver back at the...

... There weren't any spiders pursuing them.

The group, after dealing with the two that had turned on them, kept chasing the jeep for a moment, but as soon as the jeep made it past the edge of the town, they suddenly dispersed into cover. As quickly as the spiders had attacked them, they were now out of sight. "Huh. Guess Fang told them to stay in the city. You can stop now, Red" Lisa mentioned, reloading her revolver before putting it away.

Over the radio, Dune's voice piped up. "Just spotted one big, mean looking spider coming out of an open sewer end; thing's gotta be around the size of the jeep without counting the legs. I'm gonna take few shots at- damn, the bitch went to cover; that thing moved fast for its size."

"Thanks," Max told Lisa.

"Where is that, dune?" he radioed over. "That," he said to the others in the jeep, sounds like a lot safer of a place to poke around, instead of trying to throw ourselves down a manhole. Though I'd much rather just focus on finding a map or something. But if one of you happen to have a giant can of Raid we can dump down there instead, I'm game."

Red, after having all the spiders disposed of temporarily, simply leaned back in his seat, sweat dripping down his face from his stunt driving and multiple near death experiences. He closed his eyes and sighed deeply - the breath of a true adrenaline junkie. Once he'd recovered, he listened to his teammates and what they suggested.

"If the spiders aren't leaving town, they can wait. I say to leave 'em here for now and keep on looking for Fang. We gotta stop him before he summons that demon." he told the others.

"Lisa, could you maybe mind control one of the few spiders you can control into showing us where it last saw Fang?"

Recon was about to speak again, but a sudden shooting pain made him grip his arm. He grimaced as he saw the spund on his arm and he wondered if he had been poisoned.

"Well, we're gonna need to deal with those spiders before we deal with Fang. 'Else they're gonna come scuttling out of there sooner or later. Considering how fast they breed, that could mean the end of Green Fields."

He turned on the radio.

"Sheriff, that's what I was getting at with those three questions. There's a very real possibility that these spiders could become enough of a threat that it won't matter if we beat Fang or not. Could you imagine ten thousand of them coming out of the sewers once Fang's leah is broken? I don't think driving around in a car and taking pot shots will do anything,"

Dusk and Grey were actually still within sight ahead of the jeep. If they could just get Molly up close enough for them to hear her, she could call them back.

"Oh, we're near the center of the overrun town up here" Dune responded to Max over the radio, while Lisa turned to look at Red.

"Yeah, I can do that" Lisa answered his question, switching back to Human voice mid word, then looking at Recon. "No, Red is right; Fang comes first" she told him sternly, "if Fang summons the overlord while we're still dealing with the spiders, the demon will just start giving them orders in Fang's stead, along with an army of demons. Yes, the spiders will probably revert to their normal behavior once Fang's gone, but that will probably mean I'll be able to give them any orders as well."

"That's some great speculation Recon, but what even gives you the idea there will be that many spiders? I still don't know how fast they breed" Shevon responded to Recon's transmission.

"Oh, about a batch of a dozen per week, which take about two months to mature, with only about one per month being another Female. They usually eat a Male for each batch they lay" Lisa said, almost like she was reading from a textbook she didn't have.

"So with six months and enough Males to get started... Something like three hundred spiders per Female?" (When it comes to fully grown spiders, Shevon is close to the mark; 267 counting the starting Female. Counting those not fully grown yet, the number is 891.)

"Sounds about right, but I doubt they'd have all survived" Lisa mentioned idly.

"Well can you try and do that, then? Like, now!" Red told Lisa urgently. "If we only knew where Fang was..." Red said, a sudden realization hitting him like a train.

"SON OF A BITCH!!!" Red shouted excitedly and quickly started the Jeep, ordering everyone to get in.

"The bandit's radio station! It's one of the few hidey holes still intact in this area. I guarantee you that Fang's in there somewhere!" Red explained revving up the engine. Just in case his guess turned out to be wrong, he walkie talkied Arthur again.

"Arthur, I know you can't talk to the runners but do you happen to have any of Fang's former runners in your hospital?"

"I thought GPS held the station, and that that was why our radios could even reach Green Fields from here" Lisa said, sprouting her wings from her back once more. "But if you guys wanna check it anyway, go ahead; I'm gonna have to do this alone since I'm the only one the spiders won't attack on sight... Unless you want to go werewolf and come with me" she added, turning her head to Molly.

Over the radio, it was again a decent pause, this time about ten seconds, before a response came. "Runners from Fang? Yeah, I've got a few; just the ones he wasn't smart enough to directly tell to kill me... I'd rather not talk about the others" Arther responded, trailing off into an angry mutter.

"Before Dune and Flyer were with us, they used to be part of a bandit outfit - the same one we got the Jeep from." Red explained to Max

"Anyway - after we got the Jeep, I captured one of the bandits named Bill and we took him back to the Sheriff. We decided that instead of wiping out the rest of Bill's friends, we might try and negotiate with them to get more hands fighting Fang. In exchange for helping us fight the dirty vamp, Shevon would give them a pardon. Bill was the first to accept and led us to this radio station where everyone was holed up in. It's also where they found the chopper. Long story short, We killed most of the bandits, got Dune, Flyer, and...Kirk... to join us." Red said, faltering a bit in his monologue as he wasn't sure whether to include Kirk - as the former bandit was dead.

"We handed the base over to GPS for their use but they reported that one of their search teams had been ambushed and we saw that they'd been killed by Fang near the creek. So... I'm not too sure if the remaining GPS forces are still there but I'd be willing to give it a try." Red said, starting to drive in that direction with whoever else wanted to come.

"Hmm... might be worth a shot to check out this station, then," Max said. "Now about these spiders, I don't suppose you know some sort of chemical weapon spell? Something we can shove down a manhole and poison all the spiders with? We'd just have to shove cars over all the exits to bottle them up. Hell, we can shove cars over all the exits today or tomorrow anyway, who knows if that might slow them down."

"And the three of us can go check out the radio statjon. How's that sound?"
