[Outside]

Blossom looked over at Desdendelle with the most absolute hatred. "Neuralyse" had translated quite nicely: he was a memory thief.

The last memory thief she'd suffered had been her second husband. Before him, she had regarded memories as the most holy and sacrosanct of refuges against the evils of an unjust world. But once the damned man has worked his twisted power... even thinking about the things he had done to her with it made her blood run cold. If Crescent Raptor had not saved her from that slow, agonizing death of the soul... she felt nauseous simply contemplating it, and her disgust was clearly visible on her face.

The description of the wraiths it fought also made her ill. Her husband spent his life fighting similar abominations, after all: he might well have spoke of the most cunning and warped of the lothexayu. But descending to a level of evil as thieving memories? No lothexayu was abominable enough to justify that. In Blossom's eyes, nothing could ever justify that.

She wanted to demand that all present kill the abomination that stood before them. There was no way it could help that could possibly justify the crime of simply letting it exist. But they already thought her mad — perhaps rightly, she realized upon a moment of self-reflection — and so bit her tongue, steaming in fury. Her husband would have to know, of course. She was certain he could put an end to the monster.

[Pit Interior]

"Nothing special," Amu said. "Just a long climb." He then looked between al-Faddil and Nick and his friends. "Huh," he said, "I suppose I should be the first person to know better than to underestimate people who seem inexperienced."

[Edge of the Pit]

Okul casually swung his flashlight about, looking for something shiny to pocket, until it fell on Haruka. "Er... hi. How long have you been there?" he said, with an apologetic grimace.

Knives was pretty close to freaking out. Not really knowing what was going on other than "something creepy is in that room and yes, it's actually a physical presence this time" wasn't helping.

He let out a tiny cough. "Uhm, if anyone else doesn't really want to deal with this, I think I want to go back outside. Maybe tell everyone else there's an unearthly abomination down here. So they don't trip over it in the dark. I think that's a friendly gesture."

Des turned slowly. It noticed the look of hatred in blossom's eyes. "Judge not, that ye be not judged," it quoted. "Old Matt was right in this - do not judge someone until you have been in their position. Especially my position."
Slowly, it removed one of the armour's gauntlets, revealing... nothing. There was nothing inside the armour. "I have paid a very heavy price indeed."

Blossom listened, not hiding an outright scoff at the creature's ridiculous phrase. "Judge not, that ye be judged." It simply didn't make sense -- judgment was the heart of civilization. But more importantly, she simply didn't care. No matter what it had suffered, no matter what its reasons were, it was a memory thief now. At best, it was like a rabid hog: even if there was reason to feel sorry for it, it had to be put down.

Having no words for it, she turned away.

[Outside the Lair]

Considering Knives, Raptor said, "I was thinking more 'let's get the damn thing and stuff it back where it belongs'." He frowned, then said, "either way, though, it beats sitting around and talking." He turned to Tucker. "You asked for a plan. I'm afraid that's the best I can offer."

...There was alternate universes, and then there was that. Wherever Dresdendelle was from, Marion decided, it was batshit insane compared to... everything else, really. And what kind of person flat-out said that they might have to wipe your memories? It was just asking for you to come up with a way to know that your memory had been wiped, like biting your tongue right before it happened. It wasn't even witty, like, "I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you." Too clinical.

And things apparently more powerful than gods could be defeated by guile. Seriously? What if those things weren't idiotic and simply incinerated their opponent where they stood? And wasn't near-omniscience kind of part and parcel of the whole "god" deal? Even if it wasn't, if Marion was suddenly that powerful, one of the first things she'd do was get more knowledge, more informants. This wasn't looking good.

"Listen," Marion said to him, "there are times when regulations just get in the way. If your PPC or whatever had any significant pull here, you'd be gone already. If those 'regulations' will significantly impair you, I expect you to discard them, if only temporarily. And if you think that laws are more important than helping people..." She pointed down the wadi. "Luxor is ten miles that way. You can start walking."

She paid no attention to his apparent lack of a hand. Visibly, anyway. I might need to preemptively call someone about him. Just in case. If he starts acting up... I think Gramido is RWA.

Despite being a mostly-inanimate suit of armour, Des somehow managed to look annoyed. It tapped the device attached to its belt and cursed softly in a language that wasn't quite Japanese when nothing happened. It attached the gauntlet back. "Oh, well," it sighed, "I guess I'll tell you. Don't blame me if DoGA, sorry, the Pyrons fry all of us, though. Basically, the PPC - that stand for 'Protectors of the Plot Continuum' - is a secret organisation dedicated to the extermination of the reality-warping abominations known as Mary Sues, amongst other things. They are sent by mysterious, god-like entities called Suethors to wreak havoc upon the multiverse. I heard tell that one of the DoBS, sorry, the Basels' library AIs had theorised on their motive, but that's irrelevant. The PPC is divided into four schools, each dealing with a different kind of Sue: Demas, who assassinate Sues; Basel, who exorcise Ooh Wraiths; Pyron, who burn down Sue-created loci; and Indim, to which I belong, who deal with dimension hopping." It paused and tapped the RA again to no avail. "Stupid PPC tech... anyway, the PPC is about, what, sixty and a bit years old. At least I think it is - it's hard to measure time in HQ."

Despite being a suit of armour, Des managed to do a pretty good impression of a hurt person. It took a small, silver stick from a belt pouch and held it aloft. "Look here," it said. Then it put it back in its place and crossed its arms. "Who do you think I am, Achilles de Flanders? Fernand Mondego? Raistilin Majere? I do not go back on my word, implied or not. Anebrin would kill me if I would, anyway."

Marion was sorely tempted to say, No, you look like a rōnin. just for spite, but held back. That might be going a bit far. Beyond the wave of incomprehensible jargon, Des didn't seem untrustworthy. Just bonkers. Of course, there was always the possibility that he wasn't, but the first option seemed more likely to Marion.

"Calm down," Marion said to Blossom, even though she shared the sentiment. Sometimes, humans seemed remarkably incapable of grinning and bearing it. "I don't want too much bad blood here. Got it?" She glared briefly at Blossom before turning back to Des.

"In any case, you're in luck," she said. "There may or may not be something fitting that description in that tomb." She waved a hand at the entrance. "We were just going to go in to try and contact it or destroy it. And since you're so experienced in this sort of thing, you'll take point. Of course, it might not be hostile, so I don't want anyone to fire on it as soon as they see it. Wait for it to make the first move."

"Okay," said Des. It looked remarkably unfazed for someone (something?) that was just told it might have to fight a reality-warping monster. "After all, I'm already dead."
Tapping the wrist of one of its hands, it caused a holographic screen to appear; it showed a small circle, around which small, colour-coded icons floated. It highlighted one that looked an Eye of Horus, but it seemed that nothing happened. "Yosh. Just point me toward the creature."

Jackson twitched an eyebrow.

"For the record, we are not inexperienced." He said, before glancing over at Rune and al-Faddil. "We have been quit capable of helping ourselves."

Nick glared at his dad, not paying attention to Amu. Just when he thought his dad would finally give him some space, he shows up out of the blue. You asshole...

Adam, however, simply hugged John. "Mr. Rune, Mr. al-Fadil, these are my friends; Mr. Riverson and Mr. Richman."

Thomas smiled. "I'm Thomas Riverson, and that's my little twin brother, John Richman. I see you guys went through quite an effort to get through here."

Amu turned to Jackson and said, "I said you seemed inexperienced. You've proven me wrong, sorry I judged you hasty before. A lot of people assume I can't handle myself either, so I know how you feel."

He looked around, studying the group as a whole thoughtfully. He frowned slightly as he saw Nick's negative reaction to his father but, for the moment, said nothing.

Elisif's jaw dropped, a look of unmitigated revulsion coming upon her face. She was about to say something- she didn't know what, only that it was going to be something, probably something loud an expletive laden- when she turned to notice a similar expression on Blossom's face. Judging by her reaction, if anything, she felt even worse about this new guy than she did. Hurriedly, Elisif walked over to Moonlit Blossom and pulled her aside with as much delicacy and tact as she could manage. It wasn't much.

She had understood precious little of what the armored newcomer had said, but what wasn't lost on her was the fact that the newcomer not only wasn't Human- or even apparently alive- and, if he wasn't lying, had the power to manipulate memory. Hearing that had disturbed her enough, but then he'd told them the phantoms he fought had a penchant for possessing people and forcing them to rape one-another. She shuddered visibly.

Elisif held Blossom by the shoulders, perhaps a little too close for the alchemist's comfort, fixed her in her gaze, eye-to-eye, and spoke with a quiet urgency. "I get it. I do. But listen to the boss- you need to calm down. Marion's right, we can't have a fight within the group. Not now. So, we're all just going to do what she says, no matter what either of us feels about this particular situation. Okay?"

Elisif hoped fervently that the alchemist would agree. She didn't want to have to physically restrain any of their own, no matter how socially inept. You're one to talk, said the self-critical little voice in Elisif's head. Not exactly the gold standard of sociability yourself you know. She gave an internal roll of the eyes. Shut up, she thought as hard as she could. The voice went away.

"Besides, that memory wiping ability might not always be such a bad thing. You've heard what those wraiths do to people." In this moment, she found it very hard to keep eye contact with Blossom. She looked slightly physically ill. "Maybe it's better if people don't remember."

Blossom's eye twitched ever so slightly as she grabbed Elisif's fingers — a bit too tightly — and pulled Elisif's hand off her shoulder, with a glare that suggested Elisif should put a bit more distance between them. Then she said, in an icy monotone, "funny you mention that. I don't remember a lot of the things my second husband did to me. He erased the memories when he was done, so I wouldn't even know to have my vengeance. Not until Crescent Raptor helped me outwit and kill him. That's why he got away with it so long. Can't really say I'm happier that way."

Her voice grew somewhat quieter, but no less cold. "Everything we are is our memories. Good, bad, and even terrible beyond measure — all of that makes us who we are, what we are. If you people are mad enough to keep around a thing that would twist those, with some self-righteous justification slapped on, so be it. Send it to fight some abomination, as it seems so eager to do, and let us hope they annihilate one another. But I will never, never show it kindness or mercy. Are? We? Clear?"

Inside his armor he raised an eyebrow, almost amused by the reactions of the others. Okay, so it wasn't the Metafictional Concept Cosplayer Brigade. And he could think of a few times where he would have preferred leaving a five-minute gap in someone's memory to the alternative of probably having to kill them.

Of course, that meant a counterpart of sorts. He'd already guessed that about al-Faddil, from the man's updates via radio, but al-Faddil seemed to be more concerned about the general success and the new guy was still an unknown. "You'll never avoid judgement at the heuristic level. Well, unless you're NR. You want point, Des?"

[Pit]

"Muhammad al-Faddil." He offered a small bow rather than shake hands. Close proximity to a sustained discharge like this made him...not nervous, but definitely unwilling to put his Device away.

Elisif drew back, flustered. She was visibly taken aback, mouth slightly ajar as if she were about to raise her voice, unsure of just how to respond. Even to her, it was more than apparent just how personally Blossom was taking this. And, now that she knew why, as she stopped to think about it, she realized that she didn't blame Blossom in the least.

There she had been, so ready to get angry if Blossom didn't acquiesce the first time she tried to cool her off. Subconsciously, she realized, Elisif had settled back into that familiar archetypal relationship of military work. Blossom was an insubordinate team member, and Elisif was her NCO. All of a sudden, the voice was back. Perhaps that isn't quite the way to deal with this situation. Elisif's gaze flickered downwards to the ground, just for an instant, chagrined.

The way she had described it, it had sounded- any word she could think of failed to describe just how horrific it must have been, and Elisif had a significantly wider vocabulary than your average mercenary. Perhaps Wesley could have put it to words, but somehow she doubted that even he would have been able.

She could only imagine.

This rare moment of indecision concluded with Elisif pointedly closing her mouth. Her voice, slightly subdued but nonetheless insistent, almost sounded pleading when she replied to Moonlit Blossom.

"I wasn't asking you to do either of those things. I was asking you to calm down and not do anything irrational that we might all come to regret-" -and if I need to, I'll make that an order! finished the voice in her head, but she didn't say it. She didn't reach out to take her hand or anything like that this time, but she did regard Blossom with a frank expression.

"Tell you what. If it comes to that, I'll help you end that thing. But I trust Marion to make that call if or when it becomes necessary. But until that time, we listen to Marion and follow her orders. Understood?"

"Oh hai," Haruka said. "You going down? I'm not. It's dark and small and scary," she said, while hugging herself. "I think I'm going to go and find Cain, wanna join me? Blossom tried to calm herself. Elisif had a point — she'd need to keep her wits about her, if anything was to be done. She took several deep breaths, trying to find some place of inner peace.

But there was one last thing bugging her. She knew it was petty, but she couldn't help but say it, if only to release some of the pent-up energy. Studying Elisif, she asked, "is your actual title working for Marion 'Lickspittle', or did you simply take the job on for yourself?"

[Pit Edge]

Okul sat cross-legged beside the grappling hook and said, "I need to make sure that," he waved at the hook, "stays in place. My friend Amu can make it back up. Easier than scaling the walls of a city, and he's done that enough. But I certainly understand not all down there will be able to do the same." He looked down. "Who is down there? Have they food, water, such things as that? I should hope so, but..." he bit his tongue, refraining from commenting about how ill-prepared some of the people he'd met thus far had seemed.

[Inside Pit]

Acknowledging al-Faddil's greeting, Amu offered a salute in the form of a fist thumped against his cuirass. "Amu of the Uelane," Amu said. "Nice to meet you all, for those I ain't met. Nothing like a giant pit o' darkness to bring folk together, eh?"

"Like I said, it's right in there," said Marion to Des, carefully enunciating the first three words. She pointed into the tomb. "We're not sure of the exact location yet, but it can't be too hard to find." She remembered the weird fluctuations she had felt down one hallway; that was probably it.

She turned to the armor. "Bring your compatriots along, and at least start off behind me. On the off chance it's not initially hostile, having the heavy weapons at the front of the pack won't look good. Bringing them along at all might be a bad idea, but I'd rather err on the side of caution in this case."

"Let's hope it won't collapse on our heads while we're inside." With that, the possessed suit of armour entered the tomb, helmet swivelling to and fro.

Elisif blinked at Moonlit Blossom. For a moment, she was still, all was silent between the two of them.

Then, a sudden change came upon Elisif. Her expression turned dark, mouth losing it's sardonic bent and pressing into a paper-thin line. Her eyes turned hard, brows pinching together, lip curling in a visage of fury.

Elisif muttered under her breath, "'Nuffa this shit."

Let the record show, she had tried playing nice. At least she had tried. Evidently, that had been a mistake. She resolved that it would not be a mistake she repeated. Well? What now? thought Elisif pointedly in the direction of the voice in her head. It said nothing.

Right, insubordinate team member and NCO it is then.

Her right hand shot out, grabbing Blossom by the back of the neck, fingers digging in to the skin. She didn't particularly care at this point whether it hurt her or not. The alchemist evidently needed to be reminded who was in control. Pulling Blossom close, Elisif brought her left forearm to her neck and pushed, pinning her head between one forearm and the hand Elisif had seized her head from behind with.

Leaning in close such that their faces were inches apart, she spoke in a low and measured whisper. "No, actually, my title is 'professional problem solver'. That's my job, I fix problems for Marion. Look into my eyes." Elisif forced Blossom to meet her gaze, controlling her head as she did. "Understand me- and believe that I'm completely honest- when I say that I will not let you be a problem. Understood?"

Without giving her so much as a chance to respond, she threw Blossom to the ground, the impact driving the wind from her lungs. Elisif switched abruptly from whispering to shouting, looming over Blossom with an air of pure, unmitigated fury. "You do exactly what I tell you, when I tell you! You're damn lucky I've got bigger problems to deal with than some insubordinate little fuckhead civilian! Call me a fucking brown-noser, you worthless shit! You don't look sideways without my express fucking permission!"

Elisif was standing over Blossom, chest heaving with barely restrained emotion and arm raised as if she had stopped just short of physically assaulting her. After a few seconds, she turned away and gave a bitter huff. Hefting her weapon on one shoulder, she stomped off to the Temple entrance.

So much for tact and compassion. Show some basic fucking decency for once and this is the bullshit she gives me.

If Blossom could have seen Elisif's ears under her tuque, she'd have noticed they were burning.

Blossom picked herself up and brushed herself off, relatively unfazed by the whole ordeal. Barbarians, she thought to herself. But after she reflected for a moment, she supposed she been a bit harsh.

After thinking, she finally decided — she would swallow her honor and apologize first, and worry about getting an apology from Elisif later. She didn't need another enemy. How did these things go?

Carefully, her subtly stilted voice making it clear she was picking every word very carefully, she said to Elisif, "my words were... inconsiderate." I don't really want to take them back — although I will if she demands it outright. "But I hardly think they merited assault. Nonetheless, I... feel it unwise to escalate this. Perhaps we should agree that our own tempers are among our mutual enemies, and not worry about who owes the greater apology to whom?" That seemed sufficient. That was an apology, right?

Rune managed to shift his position on the wall slightly, without leaving it entirely, and—out of reach for a handshake— offered a small wave in greeting. He introduced himself, "Rune Prestegard. A pleasure to meet you both. I imagine that you two aren't here... for the dig." Rune's eyes wandered across the three boys as he said this. His voice was a little weak, though he tried to make it seem otherwise with some strings of words coming out oddly loud.

Rune was tired. Very tired. He began to consider whether or not his facade was really worth pursuing, figuring that even if he could convince or distract the others for the time being, if he continued into the darkness and potential danger of the path ahead, his condition was likely to get worse before it got better. There would come a point that he could no longer hide it from himself or anyone around him. Perhaps he would collapse? And for what good? A few more steps into the unknown? A peek at emptiness? More time to embrace the disgusting smell of the place?

Still he remained undecided. Rune simply stood there, waiting for an answer and trying to find some sort of strength in his drained body.

[Tomb: Outside of Lair]

Tucker shook his head. "I don't think that's a good idea; not for me and Knives. What if that thing decides to attack us? We're defenseless!" He glanced at Knives for a moment, and added, "...well, sort of. -For the most part. Knives has got this thing he does, but I don't think it works on... what was it? Organic things?" He briefly tried to remember, then shook his head again, holding up his hands. "Never mind- it doesn't really matter, because, we have no idea what that kind of thing can take."

"It's probably best that we just go out and tell the others- they might have a better plan. Not consulting them is only cutting our options short, don't you agree?" Tucker didn't particularly like the idea of running away, but he knew when to be practical, even if it made him look a little cowardly. Even if he was a little cowardly. Better to run away for a purpose as a coward, than die for nothing as a brave man. Eh- better not to label himself, and just do what sounds like it'll work.
