Roe smiled at Harry. "Well, there's an ancient magical thing deep in the bowels of the tomb, I may have held back some details from the general public and quite frankly we're all feeling a bit agitated right now for various reasons ranging from missing husbands to differing views on manners." She scratched her nose. "We've appeared to reach a consensus on not running in shooting though." She shrugged, "and now weapon based things are happening so they can go further in depth for that."

Marion tilted her head, squinting at Krajn. "Oh, so you don't like the plan. Do you have a better one?" She was half-sarcastic and half-serious. "I'm a tad out of my league here and am doing the best with what I've got. Not to mention that a good portion of the people here probably aren't telling me the full extent of their capabilities in one way or another."

She began pacing again. "For example, you say you've got a ship and nanoweapons. That tells me nothing. How heavily armed is the ship, if at all? How powerful are the nanoweapons? Do you have enough to go around? I need some more descriptions if I'm going to know how well you can do in what place."

Marion stopped and began yelling to no one in particular in Menyic. "Kesilo! Zal tsi xhenadrasi benvabas tekdres kati? Ho'ukova víkaztifi yazo tse hrapaz kaxe dzinenxe kaldan yazo! Ke'a usva pemkotsa?" Fuck! Why did this shit have to happen to me? I've got a demon or something here and none of my people are here! What did I do so wrong? She began muttering to herself under her breath.

Elisif stared oddly at her employer as she delivered her rant. She hadn't understood any of it, not even so much as recognizing the language, but the sight of Marion giving such a sudden and impassioned outburst split Elisif's sides. She stifled a laugh mistakenly taking the outburst to be mostly in jest. "-pfff! What was that!?"

Krajn's eyes widened slightly with irritation.

"I have a ship. With an engine. Is the rest of this so hard to figure out? I have been nothing if not open about my capabilities, and the only reason that I 'don't like' the plan is because I have no idea what the plan is. So I don't see what the point of this rant is, because what I am trying to do is figure out a reliable method to deal with whatever is down there before it bursts out and kills us all in hideous fashion, not engage in some posture-off zhrj."

She stopped and blinked sand out of her eyes again, snuffling slightly.

"Hi," Harry said, waving at the rest of the group. "I'm Harry."

Marion shot a fierce glare at Elisif, but turned away before she said anything and began rubbing her forehead to try to calm herself. "It's Menyic," she muttered. "My native language. Useful for obscene screams where you don't want anyone else to know the content."

She took a few deep breaths, pumped her wings twice, and turned back to Krajn. "Okay," she said levelly, "so you've got a ship for transportation. How fast can it get weapons for us? It might not be fast enough for whatever reason."

Marion took another deep breath. "Moreover, technically speaking, we don't know if this thing is hostile yet. We have had precisely zero contact with it. It has made no apparent moves out of the tomb. No one has started gibbering madly. We know absolutely nothing about it. So why should the first reaction be 'shoot it in the head'?"

She sighed and ran a hand over her head. "As much as I hate to admit it, I have no clue as to what I should do here. There are just too many unknowns everywhere and I'm out of my league." She looked over the assorted buildings. "Maybe I should just call in someone higher up and have everyone else bug out," she muttered.

Roe coughed to get people's attention and tried to stem her annoyance. This had all been well and good but she as hot and in a different dimension and people just kept picking at each other. "I'd just like to say, it is never, ever, ever a good idea to rush at an unknown magical entity. You never know what you're going to encounter." She frowned at the rather gung-ho woman, not in disapproval, but in scrutiny. "And while it is perfectly normal to want to shoot at things you don't understand, they tend to take exception."

She took a deep breathe through her nose. "At the end of the day, " she said seriously, "I can assure you that whatever is down there is strong enough to displace and rebuff magic. That doesn't make it naturally malevolent - just either strong or clever." She looked each person in the face seriously, even Marion. "So do not ever, ever give them the advantage."

She then smiled, though it wasn't particularly pleasant. "And know that a scared magical being is not a safe one, I would know, " she said, holding up a glowing hand again to in case anyone had forgotten that she did in fact have an area of expertise. "So it would be best to leave an arguments at the door, " she extinguished the light and said frankly, "because when we feel threatened, we won't hesitate to exploit others. We are not different from any non-magical being in that manner."

Krajn jerked her head about in frustration. Why was this so hard for them to understand - ?

Ah. Yes. Pre-spaceflight society

"What I meant," she said, still sounding strained, "is that the ship is a weapon. The drive alone should be enough to level the excavation site, and if that fails I can easily turn the andegen core into an IND. That might be considered excessive, which is why I was originally asking. As for the nanoweapons, I can assume you're at least familiar with the 'grey goo' concept?"

She tilted her head again. "So, what is the plan? Attempt contact with this thing?"

"So, that thing I asked about what's going on?" Harry said again, coughing slightly.

Vince steadied himself in the Lich's hand on the way up.

He could not fathom how Elijah had discovered his affinity for such things, a fascination that extended back to when he was barely old enough for kindergarten. He did not attempt to encourage nor drive him away from such things so long as they kept out of other parts of his life; it invited no cause for concern prior to his gaining access to magic. Necromancy is a high crime in most parts of Aetherion nowadays, and the fact that Elijah had come under fire for his mental state and passions did not help matters.

It then occurred to him that Lichdom was impossible under current Aetherionian magical theory- it was hard enough to raise the dead, let alone sire magical prowess in the often desecrated flesh of the dead and poor biosynchronization with the soul, let alone the sheer mountain of ethics concerning the raising of a sentient being from the afterlife. The necromancy of this one's time is an art. A fascinating concept, but, alas, they seemed to have visitors.

Marion sighed again — but out of relief, not exasperation. Things were finally getting a little clearer. Although there's a level between 'handguns' and 'level the place'. Haven't these people heard of RPGs? Maybe that kind of weapon is obsolete in their time for whatever reason.

"I guess," she said, flaring her wings. "What else are we going to do, besides shoot it? 'Course, I'll be taking in some people with weapons, just in case. I'm not stupid. And if worst comes to worst... There are some cases where razing everything to the ground isn't excessive in the slightest. And while I can't say I'm familiar with the specifics of 'gray goo', I get the general idea. I'm assuming you have some kind of failsafe to keep it from spreading too far?" Marion didn't want to be responsible for gray goo obliterating Luxor, not even indirectly.

Her gaze turned to Harry. "Long story short, there's something powerful in the tomb, and we don't know what. We're discussing the best way to deal with it, violently or otherwise."

"True," al-Faddil observed. "But where I'm from you're all old enough to have enlisted and gone to active service, actually." A shrug and he started forward. "Most don't about sixteen, but you can earlier, if you pass the evaluations."

"Marion, I'm almost disappointed. Kzinti lesson," the armor said. "Any interstellar or even reasonably quick interplanetary spacecraft is automatically a weapon of mass destruction."

It shrugged. "I have a rather extreme amount of firepower handy here. Four rockets, the thirty with HE-Frag and HEAT, and the lasers. My subordinates have a kinetic-kill railgun and a laser each. Unless they have an armored company in there, raw killing power is not the problem."

"Really?" Adam said. "Wow..."

"Well, Adam's dad wouldn't let that happen." Jackson said jokingly. "He's overprotective as he is now. That's pretty much why me and Nick have to watch him."

Adam sighed. "Yeah. My parents worry a lot."

[Inside the tomb-Branching room]

Thomas said nothing as he followed Amu and Okl-his mind dead onto Nick's safety.

"So," John said, "Where, exactly, are the traps you mentioned earlier? I just want to know so my brother and I can be on the look out."

Harry threw up his hands in slightly exaggerated disgust. "Oh, come ON! Is it really so out of the ordinary for people to just excavate a goddamn tomb without unleashing some kind of ancient horror?"

He glanced at the others nervously. "And, uh, you all are?"

Krajn blinked again and shut her outer eyelids entirely, her eyes still faintly glowing through the membrane. "Very well; so we're going back in to try and make contact. When and how?"

al-Faddil offered a shrug as he moved. "We have different societal pressures. Magical aptitude surfaces early in life. If you've got the power to level an apartment block, there are good reasons to get you where you can be kept an eye on and taught how to use it, and why you shouldn't normally. My son isn't much older than Jackson, I think, and has been in for six years already. He'll finish his time at officer's school and be commissioned in a few months."

He glanced over his shoulder. "Anyone else coming? I'm warning you before you answer that the smell is getting nastier the closer I get to the exit."

Blossom was lost, to say the least, by all this talk of spaceships and nanoweapons. "I think," she said, warily, "I shall stay up here. A shame it's a desert... no plants here growing worth experimenting on." She scanned the horizon and glumly muttered, "not even a cactus..."

She walked over to Harry — the one not dressed for the desert — and said, "do you mind explaining to me what in the name of the Holy Sun is going on with ships and goo and...?" she groaned, clenched fist, and gritter her teeth. "right now, I feel like I'd be more use in a damn barbarian raiding party than here, and it is quite frustrating."

Harry shrugged coolly, or tried to at least. "Well, I only know some of it. The excavation team woke up something nasty inside the pyramid, and now they're trying to figure out what to do. Krajn, my partner" - he indicated her with a thumb over the shoulder - "has suggested either sending in goo to deal with it, or getting into my ship and blasting the thing from orbit."

"Blasting," Blossom said,"I understand, even if I'm not sure how you intend to get or deliver enough firework powder for the job. But what is this goo? Some sort of... poison? I get the impression it is extremely dangerous, but beyond that?" She frowned. "No idea. Although it does sound like something I'd like to have a sample of for my studies..."

She paused, finally bothering to actual give Harry more than a quick glance over. Then she looked around in confusion, and said, "is there something I'm not noticing?"

"In truth," Okul said, "we have yet to encounter any traps in this particular place. We think."

Amu said, "but there's bound to be some. Folks don't build tombs like this if they think their bodies might well be ash. Something tells me magic will be involve."

"Fucking magic," Okul added. "Gets everywhere." He stopped, and turned to study Thomas and John. "You two know anything about the stuff? I've yet to have any encounter with it where it hasn't tried to kill me. Or worse."

Both men shook their head. Thomas remained silent.

"We have no magic in our world." John said, "Only advanced technology, sir."

John looked over at Thomas and sighed. "You'll have to forgive my brother; he's a bit paranoid right now. Our summer had been...a little adventurous, and so he's worried about letting his son go places."

Marion rubbed her neck. "I'm not sure when," she said to Krajn. "Probably soon, just to get it over with. But as to how... once I find it, I was planning on just walking right up and saying hello, how's it going?" She briefly flared her wings. "It's simple and there's nothing that wouldn't happen to me if I did it some other way. And, if worst comes to worst, there's a person here who can take over for me." She paused, biting her lip. "To be honest, I also don't have any other ideas as to contact, so..." She let her voice trail and flared her wings again.

Turning to the armor, Marion said, "Any ship might be a WMD, but do we want a WMD? As appealing as it is, overkill isn't always a good thing. In any case, I'd like you and your colleagues to come with me when I talk to it, just in case. Soft words won't get you far without a big stick to back them up."

[The Lair]

There was no sound of footsteps as Cain descended. The intense darkness of the Lair served just as effective cameoflauge as if Cain were completely invisible. When he stepped into the room, he couldn't hear anything substantial. There was no mind-numbing great booms, no sanity-shattering great speeches. All Cain could 'hear' were a faint whispering in an alien tongue he did not understand. He was not even sure if he really did hear whispering.

The lich was showing Vince the enscriptions and drawings engraved into the wall. Cain stepped closer, not afraid of being caught, to examine the work more closely. Grieving figures, and horrifying abominations, and what looked like text. Do these murals depict the magical workings of the lich? It was an intriguing thought. The creatures...Cain had never seen anything like it. Although one of Cain's main talents was necromancy, life would conspire so that he did not know much about the art besides the basics. He was impressed...and a little bit jealous.

Your work is admirable. You made a shunned branch of magic into art. I admit, I'm impressed. Cain's whispery tone was so deadpan, it was almost impossible to tell whether or not he was sarcastic or it was a genuine compliment.

Cain was being sincere there, btw.

Okul chuckled and said, "I'm guessing from your tone you've been going through the sorts of adventures that involve large amounts of attempted murder, starvation, dehydration, or some mix of all that, not the sort that involves beautiful women, yes?"

Amu frowned thoughtfully as they continued. Finally, he said, "good of you to look out for your son like that. I hope he appreciates it." Then he sighed morosely, and took a few more steps forward.

That was when Amu saw the edge of the pit. He frowned. "Damn," he said, and turned to Okul. "We got, like, rope or something on us?"

Okul shook his head and said, "I think we could scavenge some if we needed to. But not here and now."

"We wish to not talk about it." Thomas interrupted, glancing away, "It does not help with my paranoia." He then glanced at Amu. "Thank you for your words. My son...means everything to me..."

He covered his face. Just the mere thought of the summer was enough to make him cry. He tried his best not to break down in front of two strangers. It was highly embarrassing.

Realizing this, John turned to the other men. "We have grappling hooks. Is that alright with you?"

Okul groaned when he realized John and Thomas would not be sharing any stories. It was their perogative, he accepted that, but he was disappointed — a good story was always a fine way to pass the time.

But at the mention of grappling hooks, Okul grinned broadly, revealing a number of gold teeth. "Grappling hooks? Fun times. Yes, that will suffice excellently."

Amu nodded in agreement, although he said nothing, too lost in his own troubled memories. He wondered what it would be like to have a father who cared about him — although he supposed Okul was, in a way, the closest he'd ever get to that.
