"We're not really going to kill each other." Nick said, chuckling, "Those Jackson still is a bit of an asshole..."

Jackson sighed, before looking at the newcomer. "Christ almighty; how are we attracting so many people?"

"I don't know about you, but I'm really ready to check out more of this pit." Nick pointed his flashlight ahead, "Jacky, Adam, are you coming?"

Adam looked back at Rune and al-Faddil "I...I'm not so sure, Nick. I mean, can we at least wait until the adults..." He stopped when he saw the irritation in his friend's face. He held his head down and shuffled his feet. "...Nevermind."

Kalogeros looked at Rune with pity in his eyes. Poor chap, he really must have hit his head pretty hard. Couldn't even say his name right.

"Well, it will set your broken bones, as well as close open wounds and restore damage done to internal organs," he said, skipping over the details of how it would go about doing that. "Oh, and it's not a charity. Marion will be paying for every single one."

[Outside]

Blossom seemed utterly unfazed all throughout Marion's rant. "Polite company," she muttered in disgust.

Then she frowned. "Magic. I can't say I've had any good experiences with it." She sniffed the air. "But I don't feel any of the old magic here. Different worlds, different rules." Then she suddenly looked nervous. "I do hope my husband didn't jump to any unfortunate conclusions."

[Outside the Lair]

"Frankly," Raptor said, "I have no good answers for you. Except that it appears to be... communing with that Vince person. Thing. Whatever." He shook his head. "Perhaps they're deciding which of us to eat first." He glanced back at the stairs. "Try to catch it here, or leave to warn the others?"

[Staircase outside the Lair]

Cain gave an amused look at Tucker's obvious relief. Your Rune is not here, as for what has just occured, nothing that should concern you nor should you try and find out, If you're smart, he added to himself.

He turned towards the shaman and shook his head. There's no reason for it to kill us after you aided it. Such an action will only raise questions and give incentive for the others to try and get rid of it.

Cain looked thoughtful. Communing with the other fellow, named Vince, is he? Interesting, they must find a lot of things in common with each other. His thoughts drifted towards the Lich. Now that the shock of the events wore off, he could approach them in a more rational and analytical manner. If the being was anything like he called himself, then that would mean that he most likely was once human—and most importantly, a very skilled, if not powerful, necromancer.

If Cain were to commune with the lich, then perhaps he could find the answers he were looking for and leave the Dig Site quickly. However, he didn't trust it. There was a very good reason why that lich was sealed away, and he wanted to find that reason before he got chummy with the abomination.

He recalled that the walls of the Lair were covered in murals and writing. Perhaps some answers could be found in those walls, or perhaps he could speak with the lich—information in exchange for information, maybe.

Without a single word, Cain turned around and descended down the stairs, still half-visible.

Marion coughed. "Yes," she said lightly. "Polite company. The company that makes up most of the people of the world and, as such, the company that you should assume you are in. Unless your world is deranged to the point that asking to cut someone open is a rather formal way of going, 'Hello, how are you?'"

She gave a brief, questioning glance to Amu and Okul before turning back to Blossom. "But even if that's the way it is where you're from, loudly talking about dissection tends to make the employees nervous." She leaned in close to Blossom, flaring her wings slightly. "So I'd much prefer you to discuss your science in private with your would-be subjects. Capiche?" She grinned broadly, showing quite a bit of teeth.

[Tomb: Bottom of Pit]

"A pint of green fluid can do all of that?" Rune gave the potion an impressed look. "Sounds like a miracle cure-all." He gave the vial a little shake and considered, "Well... I suppose whatever expense Marion is charged can later be docked from my pay. I just hope it's less than a medical bill."

Rune gave the potion one last look over, then he glanced at Kalogeros, an appreciative smile at the corner of his mouth. In truth, he was rather nervous about drinking a vial of noticeably green liquid, even with the context of it being a healing potion. And yet, another part of him was undeniably curious. He wasn't accustomed to trying new or questionable things, even something of his own creation. Especially something of his own creation. Not before seeing proof that there would be no adverse effect. But he had no reason—besides, perhaps, unfamiliarity—not to trust Kalogeros.

So, he shrugged, then raised the vial to his mouth... and downed it.

[Tomb: Outside the Lair]

When Cain finished his oddly quiet speaking, Tucker was left silent with a look of even further confusion on his face. It took him a while, but he finally got out, "Look man, finding Rune is way besides the point right now. From the sound of things, that creature in there is a pretty big concern. To me, hell, maybe even to- hey! Where are you going? You're not..."

Tucker made a noise; a sort of half sigh, half groan. Cain had suddenly gone back into the other room without so much as a grunt of recognition. Tucker doubted he'd been paying attention in the first place. So much for Cain he thought, frowning, then turned his attention the man in the mask.

"I wish I could help, but I don't think I've got the proper kinds of skills to catch a thing like that. Where I come from, those kinds of things don't exist. Not outside of books and horror films." He said, glancing nervously at the staircase. "Hey- hey, you were in there right? Do you know what happened? The way Cain is acting is... fishy. I don't like it."

As he waited for an answer, Tucker realized that Knives had been unusually quiet. "Knives, you okay?" he asked, glancing back at the boy. "You can talk now, just keep it down."

Okul glanced at Marion and snorted back a laugh. He moved over to Marion and quietly said, "I assure you, the Yoth are many things, but even among their people, that woman would be marked a madwoman. Must be a really good apothecary — the Yoth aren't in the habit of tolerating eccentrics, and typically prefer their women making babies and tending kitchens. Or a perhaps she's just a real freak in the bed — the crazy ones always are, as Amu will attest — and has a husband influential enough to cover for her."

Amu turned red, but did not reply.

Blossom, who hadn't heard Okul, turned to Marion and said, "oh, alright, fine. I suppose I shall spare your delicate little ears."

Heh... "strange woman" could easily mean Marion the seven-foot humanoid dragon, Blossom the half-naked mad scientist openly looking for test subjects, or Roe the phase-shifting immortal with no qualms about being experimented on by aforementioned mad scientist.

[Outside]

"I believe we've met," Blossom said to Samuel. "The temperamental winged lizard-woman is Marion, and evidently in charge here. This open-minded immortal of whom I am growing fond is Roe." She glanced around. "Oh, and I recognize the crown of the Barbarian King Okul, and..." she frowned as she studied Amu for a few moments. She could swear she'd seen him before, but couldn't place where. "...one of his vassals."

Okul gritted his teeth and corrected, "Barbarian Emperor Okul."

"Close enough."

[Lair]

Raptor went to stand besides Tucker and said, "his funeral. One less mage." He looked Tucker up and down and said, "I do not believe we have met, however." He offered a stiff bow. "Crescent Raptor, a Shaman of the Yoth. My job is dealing with errant mages, and right now, that job is proving very difficult. Who are you and your quiet friend?"

Thomas stopped in his tracks, his watch scanning the area. ''So my son has been here. Now I just need to know where he's-"

He suddenly felt someone hit him in the back of his head. "OW! DAMN IT!" He turned around, and saw John behind him.

"Can you be patient for once, Thomas?" John ranted, glaring at him, "We promised Moonlit that we would find her husband too! Also, I'm very sure that Nick is safe."

Thomas sighed, "Look...I know I sound overprotective, but I just feel like..." He stopped himself and turned around, "Let's find Moonlit's husband. Then the children."

Krajn flickered through her feeds a final time. They were still showing nothing out of the ordinary; apparently whatever had just been released from the tomb - assuming that was actually the case - wasn't coming or couldn't come out right now. She noticed that she had a connection to the channel with Harry and Cecelia again, and opened it up.

Krajn? Where have you been? Cecelia's been trying to contact you for fifteen minutes.

Link me through; we have a problem and I need to dump her the information.

She waited for the upload to complete, then told Harry Meet me at the entrance and stepped out of the entrance, blinking against the breeze and light. There was a faintly tan smell coming from the sand, reassuring after the absence of anything in the tomb. She approached Marion and inclined her head.

"I think we're safe for the moment. Who are these people?"

{Yes, indeed it does.}

The Lich strode gracefully across the room in two strides, it's legs unfolding to two rubbery stilts to help it cross the distance. They remained extended, holding the Lich up and hovering about the twisted figures depicted in the mural. A wiry arm reached back and, without the Lich having to look behind him, scooped Vince up and brought him up next to the wall so that he might share in the appreciation.

{And might I say, if I do not presume too much, that it is so refreshing to hear of youth embracing necromancy. Such a thing was unheard of when I was still technically alive.}

The Lich unfurled one of it's wormlike fingers and traced it over the wall. Contrary to Vince's expectations, it’s finger passed over the grieving figures to come to rest on one of the abominations. He traced around its hideous form with a certain care and fondness, like a father with the infant picture of a long-grown child.

It took Vince a moment to realize that the "art" the Lich was referring to wasn't the wall, but the horrific, twisted figures depicted on it.

{I admit, it's not my best work. Nothing like my later creations, certainly. Crude, inelegant. But every aspiring necromancer needs a place to start, does he not?}

Elisif raised a hand and interjected, "Mine is!" in Marion's direction, in response to her asking Blossom how deranged her world was. And look how I turned out thought Elisif, with a modicum of smugness. She wasn't that socially inept, surely.

She had been standing behind Marion, regarding Blossom with apparent suspicion. She either wasn't very bright, or didn't much care what other people thought of her- which, come to think of it, was itself not very bright.

She chuckled along with Okul at Marion's ribbing of the newcomer, then spoke up to Blossom. "I'm pretty sure your idiot husband's inside the tomb. I saw him head inside a while back in a bit of a hurry. Speaking of which-" She held up her pistol. "We need to find whatever's down there. And kill it. You can help with that, right?" Elisif's arched brow was a less than subtle indication that she suspected not.

"Also, I think I'm going to need a bit more than this. What's the largest caliber thing in the armory?"

Marion rolled her eyes and left Blossom to Saul. Turning to Krajn, she said, "Honestly, I'm not sure. They were out here when we left the tomb. So far, we've got an immortal..." She pointed to Roe. "...a snooker-loopy lady in love with dissection searching for her husband..." She pointed to Blossom. "...and that guy who hasn't said much about himself." She pointed to Saul. "I just hope nothing gets fouled up more than it already is."

She glanced over to Elisif and briefly flared her wings. "Honestly? Probably that. I can't remember if that version of the USP is chambered for .45 ACP or not." She pulled out her own gun, a SIG Sauer P226. "This isn't much smaller than that — .40 S&W. Of course, there's a lot more to guns than caliber." She holstered her pistol again. "Got a decent amount of high-powered assault rifles — oh, and there's that." She nodded at the armor and its massive gun. "But I don't think you can lug that around."

Elisif eyed the armor and it's improbably large weapon. She cocked her head, affecting an exaggerated pout. "Oh, I dunno." Pulling back her right sleeve, she flexed her right bicep a bit. Donning a faux-contemplative look, she nodded and said, as if she were the only person there, "Not bad, if I do say so myself."

Turning her head to look at Marion, she grinned. "And yeah, that sounds great. I'll take an assault rifle."

[Tomb: Bottom of Pit]

Rune had no time to wait and wonder, the potion's effects kicked in almost immediately. A startled "Oh!" was all he could say as the odd sensation of his inner and outer arm and shoulder presumably healing. He was glad that al-Faddil's pain suppressant was still affecting him, because it seemed like whatever was going on in his arm might cause a bit of pain. Or a lot of pain. But he felt none, and for that he was thankful.

At some point during the process, Rune noticed a distinct change in his shoulder, whereas it had felt indescribably unpleasant after he had taken the fall, and indeed even after al-Faddil had set the bone, it now felt much better. Or, proper- functioning. The way it had felt before making high-velocity contact with the ground. It was such an unexpectedly nice sensation that Rune was almost tempted to undo the bandage on his arm right then and give it a swing, but he could still feel some distinct workings occurring, and decided to wait.

When it seemed to have finally settled, it took a moment for Rune to speak. He looked at Kalogeros, and said, "I'm impressed!" and it was clear that he was impressed. "This is impressive!" he said, and it was clear that the potion was impressive. "This feels like the best recovery I've ever had!" He said, and that was probably true too. He paused for a moment—very strangely happy—then added a final, odd but cheery, "... thank you!"

Rune was also inexplicably even more hungry than before, a feeling he didn't typically associate with just having consumed something. Then again, he considered, the healing potion was essentially a more effective version of standard medicines, and nobody got full by eating pills and drinking cough syrup. Still, a small part of him now regretted not going to lunch.

Shaking this feeling off, he looked up and said, "So, Kaidza, Kalo...leros, were you going to be heading back now, or...?"

[Tomb: Outside of Lair]

"Oh- um, right. Pleasure to meet you Crescent Raptor." Tucker nodded and smiled respectfully. "I'm Tucker Weller, and this is Knivesss... he just goes by Knives." he glanced over to the doorway leading to the room again, then back at Crescent Raptor and spoke with a bit of an urgency in his voice. "Truthfully, I'm just here to offer additional funding and research assistance, 'connections' and all that. But I can't help but feel a little concerned when I see..." he took a deep breath and jerked his head in the direction of the doorway, "...that."

Tucker shook his head, glancing back and forth between the doorway and the shaman. "I mean— you seem to think it's bad, right? And you're a- a Shaman; are you familiar with a thing like that?" Again, he nodded his head towards the doorway.

Krajn inclined her head to Samuel, Roe, and Blossom as a group, then turned back to Marion, blinking again against wind-blown sand. She noticed Elisif mentioning weapons.

"That... thing," Raptor said, "is new to me. Even the Transcendents are partial to less offensive forms. And I should hope to never see such a creature again." He paused, deciding how much more to say, then added, "but it is cunning — more cunning than it seems, capable of deceiving even the most brilliant of minds. Know that, and be wary."

[Outside —> Inside the tomb]

Okul and Amu quietly made their way to stand near Thomas and John. Okul said, "tell me, what chance do you two really stand in this place? Crawling with traps and horrors as it is."

"So," he continued, "it might be wise to let me and Amu help." And disregard anything that goes missing, he thought to himself, but did not say this aloud. "What do you say?"

[Outside]

Blossom ignored Marion, and instead pulled out a clear vial of what seemed to be water and showed it to Elisif. "Magic suppressant," she said. "Must be orally imbibed. Takes a few minutes to work. Only works on mammals. But it is, according to all tests, virtually undetectable, unstoppable, lasts several hours, and — my personal innovation in the field — when magic is applied by another to try and get rid of it prematurely, the result is a sixty-seven percent lethality rate, dependent primarily upon the physical fitness and health of the subject and medical knowledge of the would-be healer. Does that count as helpful?"

Then she sighed and added, "but as for myself... I should prefer to avoid combat. I can kill a low, scavenging criminal in a fight, but not a soldier."

Roe inclined her head to the new comers, fighting back a smile at the veiled jabs between Marion and Blossom. She perked up when she hear mention of whatever was 'down there' and watched as some of the group went back inside.

It's older than anything that comes out of the sidhe is my guess, Mun said. This place has that sort of feeling.

Roe frowned and allowed herself to actually see, registering the magic that seemed pervasive in the most mundane of dimension. Gingerly she reached out to the cords of power and in response the leylines writhed. To her surprise they drew toward her, and away from the weird thing in the tomb. It was so quick and violent it was like being punched. Just as quickly they snapped back into place, and she was left trying not to look like she had just taken a bad trip.

Not doing that again. She mused. And it's not blending well with the surrounding magic, it sort of...rebuffs it. So probably younger than Ernmas and Nuada. Or maybe older and just sealed away, since they've long learned to blend with younger magics. Not less dangerous, either way.

Mun hummed his agreement. Different dimensions, different magic after all though, so she could be completely wrong. The leylines here were lazy, now that she was actually looking at them, barely straying from their grid pattern, glowing dully, not the vibrant azure she was used to. Looking up she was a little shocked to see they all but blended with the sky.

"So..." she said slowly trying to mask her breathlessness. That had been a stupid, stupid mistake. Her ribs were going to hurt for weeks. "What exactly did you guys encounter? Try some details, if you could."

The Lich's distinctive voice made itself heard in the minds of Crescent Raptor and the people he was speaking with.

{You give yourself too much credit, Magekiller. You are possessed of an above-average intelligence at best, far short of brilliant. Your ego was an easy string to pull, you may want to consider having it severed.}

Elisif looked over the vial Blossom presented, then shook her head. “No good. If my suspicions are right, what we’ll find in there might not even have a pulse, much less a metabolism. If that’s the best you got, then you’re probably better off hanging back. Unless of course you feel like crossing my firing line."

(It did not occur to her that her previous interest in scientific experimentation might make others hesitant to trust her assistance.) She looked around, examining the group again, eyes lingering on Krajn. Is that a reptile? she wondered. Scales? I think it might be. Hmm. Maybe a relative of that winged thing? Such a pity everybody here is so squeamish. I might never find out if all these humanoids are as similar on the insides as the outsides.

al-Faddil smiled ironically. "Are we going, then?" he directed to Nick. He raised an eyebrow. "Adults?" All three of them could pass for at least twelve, which was old enough to enlist; thirteen even, old enough to be assigned to active duty.

[Outside]

The armor chuckled with surprising warmth. "I'd like to establish it's a threat, first. Nothing directly attacked us. But if Marion says we go in shooting, we go in shooting." It gestured to the nearby slightly smaller suit shadowing Marion, and the other out in the camp, both of which were now carrying their own rifles now; a bullpup design too bulky for realistic human use, with a noticeable lack of an ejection port. But a human might have managed to actually carry it around. "All three of us, I presume?"

Finally. Nick thought, before smirking, "Yes, we are."

Jackson got his flashlight out, before saying, "Adam often does that. Since he's the youngest in our trio, he often depends on either me, Nick, or someone older. To him, we kind of classify as 'adults.'"

Adam looked up at al-Faddil, smiling. "Dad always said I should always listen to my elders. You are my elder, right Mr. al-Faddil?"

[Inside the tomb]

Neither John nor Thomas expected Oku or Amu to follow them, but since they gave them the head's up, it was best to let them lead.

"Alright then." John said, "Since you know this place far longer than we do, we'll let you guys help us."

Thomas looked a little displeased, but he sighed, knowing he had no other choice. I'm still nervous about the traps they mentioned before...

"Unfortunately," Marion said to Krajn, "not much more than assault rifles at the moment." She frowned. "Although I know a guy in Luxor... I could pick up some heavier ordinance if need be. It'd be here in twenty minutes or so. I'd prefer it not to come to that, though; I don't want to destroy the tomb, if reasonably possible."

She began pacing, rustling her wings restlessly. "And, after all, this is assuming the thing is hostile. Nothing's erupted from the ground shrieking the sound that shatters our souls yet." She paused at the unintentional alliteration for a moment, then continued. "It's certainly possible — if unlikely, in my opinion — that the thing is ambivalent to us. And, hold on..." She paused for another moment, clicking her claws in thought. "There are still some people in there, right? So they might have been responsible. But no one's come running out in terror yet. So maybe no slaughter or the like has occurred. Or maybe..." She groaned and thumped her tail on the sand. "Gah, I hate it when this sort of thing happens. Not enough information, and trying to get it is dangerous."

Marion turned to the armor. "Personally, I'd say hold off on going in guns blazing for now; I won't rule out the possibility of it in the future. And if we go, I'd say all three of you go. We'll need all the help we can get."

Okul looked at the forward corridor. "That corridor eventually branches into three. Forward proved bad. Left and right are unknown to us. Amu?"

Amu said, "I say we go into the corridor, yell, see if anyone responds?"

"The problem," Okul said, with a shake of his head, "is it might be anything."

"Point," Amu said. He frowned. "I dunno. Marion seemed pretty mistrustful of the other two options as well." He bit his lip, then said, "I say left*

Blossom studied the curious weapons thoughtfully, guessing them to be a relative of the crossbow. At the very least, she was confident that the hollow end meant death. "My husband is in there," she said. "He's almost as tough as he thinks he is." Then she frowned, worry coming to her face. "Holy Sun, I hope he's okay. Poor fool never could resist a challenge — if there's something in there he can't handle, he won't admit it until it kills him. Or worse."

She wrung her hands. "Listen," Blossom said, "I know he's probably been a complete jackass. But bring him out alive, and I promise you I'll wring a sincere apology out of him for whatever stupid shit he's said."
