That first image... is that a crossover between Wolverine, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Superman and Batman rolled into one person?
...wow.
Moon◊I actually prefer the Dragonball pic, only because you can see the two characters in the back doing something that seems to lead to the character in front. The superhero pic is rather creepy and there's no merging.
I think what this might take is a three-paneler showing Gohan and Trunks doing the dance, the moment of merging, and then Gotenks by himself.
It took me a little while to get the superhero one; I think the second image works better in a way.
That was the amazing part. Things just keep going.First is JAFAAC since you need to know that all of those props/costumes come from maybe a dozen different superheroes (I see Wolverine, Supes, Hawkeye, Robin, Blue Beetle, Thor, Wonder Woman, Captain America, err.. I'll be obsessing over this for some time). I don't know if Infringement Man had any backstory, but without it, it's not even an example. It's just other characters' features dumped onto two new heroes -
- by which I mean that if you have no previous knowledge of those superheroes, you might think these are just new characters, that popped into being without any previous merging of others. (And thanks for posting the old caption, it did help a little, but I think some of the original superheroes might be wrongly attributed to the two. Nevermind.)
The second is somewhat better, but it took me some time to realize that the two characters aren't the same.

please don't capitalize my handle. I just don't like it.Septimus: Fusion Dance doesn't require that they be a pair at all. "Two separate characters merge to make one, usually more powerful, unified being, either willingly or via Applied Phlebotinum and/or Merging Machine."
Shadow and Sloth: This was the caption on the original picture: "The Avengers and The Justice League Of America merge to bring forth Captain Doctor Superbatwonderwolveclops and his sidekick, Thorine, the boy wonder!" Does that help?
Sloth: A Fusion Dance does produce a new character.

Yu Gi Oh GX had some things, but getting decent anime screenshots is a pain...[1]

Oddly, I can't tell if that's supposed to be read LTR or RTL. I mean, it's not flipped, since the katakana isn't mirrored, but the dialog flows kinda weird.

Not a whole lot; I'm not really seeing any Thor in the Robin/Wolverine sidekick. More to the point, while it does an admirable job pointing out who was fused, it doesn't really explain what the hell caused this awesome fusion to begin with.

I am afraid that there is too little contrast in these images (and lots of distracting text).

It might not need to be a pair, but definitively more than one person. I can only see one person there.

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanBeing the Trope Namer has little or no bearing on how well it works as a page image.
The DBZ pic illustrates the trope rather well. Most importantly, it clearly shows two characters becoming one.
The comic book hero one illustrates someone who is a mash-up of lots of different characters. There's really no need to know the individual characters to figure that out. However, there's no merge shown, and whether it's several characters who merged, or just a character who's a parody of everyone involved isn't clear.
So, the DBZ image works better for me.
Check out my fanfiction!Just like the DBZ image, but even clearer.
+1

Which of them has the venom spurs, or the electrolocation?

Check out my fanfiction!Cropped it a bit. Have no idea about copyright/licence on this picture.
@Another Duck: There are other pictures including a snake(cobra?) and an other animal(?) but they don't look as clean and would probably be to big, and they don't include the dance. and I'm a little drunk right now and don't really feel like finding a picture that wouldn't fit anyway.

The best platypus joke is already in use on All Your Powers Combined.
I approve of the bears.

Crown Description:
Nominations for replacement images:

This image was changed without discussion on the 16th of June of this year, from the one on top
to the one on the bottom
. The only reason given for making the change was "the trope namer". I don't see anything in the Dragon Ball one to illustrate the trope, and telling me in the caption that it's "Heterosexual Life-Partners taken to its Logical Extreme." doesn't help.
I suggest that we either go back to the Superhero one or find one that's better than either one.
