It seems to me that it's high time we had a thread to discuss the works of Philip K. Dick. I realize this will probably bring in the crazy people, and that makes me happy! :)

I'll toss out an arbitrary conversation starter: what's your favorite funny moment in a Dick novel? For me, it would have to be the scene in A Scanner Darkly where they're trying to find the "missing" gears on the 10-speed bike.

My favorite was the part in VALIS where Kevin finally gets to ask God why his cat had to die. The answer is wonderfully blunt.

Hmm, it's been a while since I read VALIS. I had rather mixed feelings about it when I first read it, but that was quite a while ago. I might appreciate it more now.

Ok, a couple more open questions:

1. What work of Dick's would you most like to see adapted as movie? (Excluding the many that already have, of course).

2. What work do you think is the best starting place for someone not familiar with Dick?

Personally, though it's not my favorite book, I think Flow My Tears, The Policeman Said would make a great movie.

As for starting place, well, I'm tempted to say Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, but I think I'd actually lean more towards Ubik or maybe Clans of the Alphane Moon.

I'd like to see The Eye In the Sky done as a period piece. (It's very heavily tied to the 1950s setting.)
