Exactly what I was getting at. Rape is cheap shock material, but murder isn't?
I'm aware that it's all YMMV, but I feel like that makes it worse. If they go this route, I'd rather they stick with it for two or three episodes to give the situation some depth, rather than just saying "rape traumatizes people!" and doing so in such an in-your-face manner. They could gave gotten the same result with more 'art' by just leaving what happened to be implied but ambiguous. After all, that's all that Akane saw and she was the viewpoint character; why lot allow the viewer to make judgments through her eyes?
There's a case to be made that society has trivialized murder to the point that what should be alarming becomes mundane, but the fact of the matter is that Rape Is a Special Kind of Evil and will always be treated as such. It has also become shorthand for painting a character as utterly despicable without silly little things like nuance and development, which is just lazy.

And that peeves me.
In any case, someone breaking down like that isn't entirely improbable (not to mention that we knew basically nothing about the criminal in question aside from some soul data; for all we know he's been cracking lately), and like you I hope the show get classier, but I thought what we got was fine. Only when they continue with this way of doing things will I actually get annoyed.
It's also for a very minor character though. Who dies in the very same episode.
I mean, I could see it being bothersome if they were lazy enough to do that to a major, recurring character, especially if that character had lots of screentime, but if it's just the villain of the week or something then the obvious, in-your-face kind of thing is the best because they're only going to use it to display a point rather than actually care about who they're writing anyway.
Being at the Heavens, control the land. Being at the Earth, remove its keystones. And lay bare the scarlet hearts of man!A throw-away rape victim is even cheaper because it requires no investment.
But why is that cheapness bad when they are going for something disposable?
Being at the Heavens, control the land. Being at the Earth, remove its keystones. And lay bare the scarlet hearts of man!The way i see it...
Rape is just being used to show how the justice system in this verse doesn't care about actual crime, and is merely taking action against people who seem to have passed some quantified level of psychological disturbance (of which rape is a good crime to use, as typically the victim is left psychologically damaged after the crime)
Showing an instance where there is a crime, and the system takes action against both the perpetrator and the victim, is a good way to illustrate that. We're not actually emotionally supposed to give a darn about either of these characters, we're just being introduced to the premise of the show
I don't really see it as being used to paint the guy as anything but crazy. And little desperate. He was saying 'I'm going to be arrested no matter what I do, so why shouldn't I go completely wild?', and therefore it's exposing another flaw in the system, and commenting on why it's a bad idea to go after people for crimes they haven't committed yet.
Yeah, that stuff as well. The rape is being used as much more of a plot point than a drama point.

I believe Mohiro Kitou is te one who designed the system. he believes Humans Are Bastards and he want utopia. Otherwise, the world won't be that cynical.
If you see me I'm on an accidental Archive Binge. No dead kids yet, so Kitoh probably wasn't involved.
Seriously, what happened to Kitoh that made him such a depressed and nihilistic writer. All of his works all just so depressing and cynical. For me, he is one of the few that seems to be aiming for Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy.
His works do tend to have a unique flavor that I find quite delectable, but it's certainly an acquired taste.
And then there's Noririn.

I Think I saw that on 4ch at least once.
Heh, that's so going to be true.
I consider it my duty to ensure that, should you be surprised by a bear in your library, you will have ample ammunition to beat it to death.x3 Poor girl, having the ill luck to be written by the Butcher.

i. hear. a. sound.Poor girl.
I love how in the picture, Sayaka looks annoyed while Saber has a sympathetic look.
Oh, a new work from Urobuchi, count me in.
Finally watched the first episode and I have to agree that they were really strong on the system being flawed. I would have loved it better if they had used this as the episode 3 of Madoka equivlent to show exactly how messed up everything is after we see nothing but good things and praise to/for the system. Would have been so much better.
It's Urobuchi. No one is going to think that it's a good system for a second. Best to get the obvious parts out of the way before getting into the interesting and gritty stuff.
Heh, so true.
Edit:But the episode was very messed up...

New episode's out. I have... mixed feelings here. It feels like they're going a little too fast.
I've got new mythological machinery, and very handsome supernatural scenery. Goodfae: a mafia web serialShionAnd her glorious boobies was introduced this episode. What's the problem?
I honestly don't think the writing being lazy in this case matters...
I mean, was that minor character woman even given a name? Is there a reason to put more effort into it?
