I'm a huge fan of the game Deus Ex (and the prequel Human Revolution), and I'm looking for recommendations for SF with a similar feel. I like that sort of government conspiracy, secret experiments, "who can you trust?" story. It doesn't necessarily have to be set in the future, but I'd prefer at least a few SF elements. I guess the main X Files arc is another example of the sort of thing I want, but without the paranormal elements. Comic recommendations are also welcome.

At first, I thought you were talking about Cyberpunk. Try looking at the examples under Conspiracy Kitchen Sink, maybe?

A fistful of me.

There doesn't seem to be any SF in there. I'm not looking for Dan Brown type stuff. I'm mainly looking for things where the government, or at least a branch of the government, is conducting secret genetic experiments, building illegal machines, using alien technology, etc., that slowly unravels itself to the main character. I tried looking under Men In Black and Government Conspiracy as well, but most of it was fantasy, comedy, or books written by actual conspiracy theorists. I'm not looking for the former two for now (even though I actually prefer fantasy and science fantasy over most sci-fi), and I'm definitely not interested in conspiracy stuff presented as nonfiction, or fiction that's written by actual conspiracy theorists as an excuse to preach about their own beliefs. I'd also prefer it if no psionics are involved. I have nothing against it, but the closer to the setting of Deus Ex (without actually being set in the Deus Ex universe), the better. It doesn't need to be Cyberpunk, but I'm guessing that's where I'm most likely going to find what I'm looking for.

Less literature, more anime, but Ghost in the Shell: Standalone Complex.

Also check out William Gibson and Neal Stephenson.

That anime actually looks interesting (and I'm generally not a big anime guy). Thanks.

I'm familiar with Gibson and Stephenson, and have read a few of their works (Difference Engine, Snow Crash, Neurmoancer). Anything in particular?

Note that I'm not looking for works merely about corrupt government companies (how many cyberpunk stories don't have those?), but works where the government is behind something more insidious (like the plague in the first Deus Ex) without the public's knowledge or even the knowledge of some people working for them.

Just wondering, have you read the Human Revolution tie-in novel?

Also, how about The Man Who Was Thursday? It was no coincidence that DX used excerpts from it.

Haven't read either, but have been meaning to read TMWWT for a while.

Is the tie-in novel any good? I usually stay away from those.

It's pretty decent. It's especially nice since it covers for one of Human Revolution biggest weaknesses (by fleshing out the bad guys more).

It apparently has Gunther Hermann. I'm sold!
