The cause of all suffering was to be free. After all, they were caged beasts who had been raised to be slaughtered. And so Ymir defied her master to set them free.

Its not for nothing The situation is now being framed as something Ymir wants too, to show how the Attack Titan hasnt changed when Eren took it. Its still following Ymirs will [To Freedom].

Well that is not something I expected Ymir to be capable of doing. Jesus some of the past shifters Titans were scary as fuck.

I think they are also likely a resurrection of each shifter too, to make it all the more clear Ymir is bringing them back to life to do her bidding. Bert even shows up in Armins mind just before the Colossal appeared, which is too much if a coincidence in this situation..

Bertolt starting to cry when Armin though suggests that all the shifters are being mind controlled to a degree. I doubt Bertolt really wanted to attack and kill Reiner like he just tried to there. This likely means every single Titan Shifter that Ymir is bringing back can be completely controlled by her and she can make them use their intelligence in battle too. I am honestly quite astonished this is a capability of Ymir's. Kind of shows you why you don't piss off the original Founder....

It also means Zeke is dead since he got made a Ymir puppet. Which is good riddance. The one good thing to come out of all of this.

Is there an Attack on Titan anime forum or can it be discussed here too?

Could that have been the reason for Bird Falco? Because Zeke died and the powers transferred to the person that had previously consumed his spinal fluid? wild mass guess

[up]They should've transferred to a lot of people in that case, although I guess Falco being a shifter already could have a role to play. Previous lore is if a shifter dies w/o being eaten the power goes to a rando. Otherwise presumably Annie would end up with Plot-Armoured Titan in the event that suffer boi achieves his dream

[up]I didn't even think about that, some random Eldian may have the new Beast Titan power out there and not know what to do with it.

Just saw a neat theory on how Armin might get out of his present situation: the last time we saw Annie’s ring was during their boat conversation, showed up clear as day. It’s been missing from her fingers ever since. Colossal go boom boom?

[up] Ehh, there was something similar based on Erens pants being fixed at one point when he lost his head, probably just a mistake like that was.

Annie might try to get him out of the shifter's jaws herself? I am not entirely sure but if I recall correctly she was said to be stronger than a usual Female Titan shifter considering her skill with hardening. We saw atleast a couple past Female Titan shifters in this chapter that were taken out easily. Then again their is an a lot of shifters being sent at them and several Warhammer Titan shifters are still active so I am really not sure what Annie will be doing here.

Pieck is in big trouble too, shes impaled by the most recent Warhammer at the moment.

Anyone wonder what Annie's Female Titan would have looked like if it had the abilities/characteristics of the other titans? The flayed human appearance is from the Colossal, and the hardening ability is from the Armor (or possibly from the Warhammer), but despite her mentioning that they did extensive experimentation with her titan's adaptive power, it doesn't show any characteristics from the Beast, Cart, or Jaw, despite the fact that they should have had access to those prior to the initial attack on Paradis.

I'm curious, do the wall Titans have weird Fertile Feet powers to "counter" the whole "complete destruction of the ecosystem" problem?

Man, if we hadn't already learned he'd changed the ending, that sentence could have a very different connotation.

Just four chapters to go, huh? I'm not really sure how he can write a satisfying ending in just that many. It really feels like Isayama succeeded in making the characters' current situation an inescapable one.

Anyway, caught up to the manga recently after binging the first three seasons, so here's some assorted thoughts. I'm assuming there's no need to spoiler tag anything considering which thread this is.

  • Overall, amazing series. The world is intriguing and unique, the characters (the ones that matter anyway) are engaging and multifaceted, and the plot only gets better as it goes on. The anime's fantastic music, voice acting and action doesn't hurt at all.
  • It's got one of the best premise-altering reveals I've seen. The likes of the basement are usually either revealed in the prologue or first act or set up as a twist ending, but here it's set down two-thirds into the story and completely changes everything while fitting in perfectly with all that's happened before (complete with some brilliant bits of foreshadowing) and setting up the stage for the larger conflict.
  • That said, I don't blame some people for being turned off for the much darker, greyer tone of season 4 and onwards. Beforehand, it's a grim and bloody story but still clearly has its good guys and villains — there's not much argument to be had against "we need to keep humanity from being wiped out" — with a defiant, hopeful tone underneath. O Ps 2 and 3 really exemplify this. After the basement, things get a lot more morally complex than that. I can't help but feel that the attack on Liberio is narratively there so that the Paradis crew don't have the moral high ground anymore — which can feel slightly cheap. Granted, everyone was dancing on Eren's strings at that point, but that's more in-universe reasoning.
  • Relatedly, after the reveal the entirety of the Uprising arc seems rather quaint. At the time it felt like we were finally getting to the bottom of it, all of the secrets and reveals at the core of the story. Which then turns out the be pretty much a few nobles clinging to their power inside a tiny area of a tiny island, ignorant or heedless of the danger beyond (and those that weren't, were unable to do anything about it — thanks Karl, you asshole).
  • Eren's arc is amazing. After the timeskip there's some whiplash since his entire character appears to have done a complete 180, but then as the story fills in the gaps with flashbacks it all falls into place bit by bit. It may feel a tad cheap that pretty much from the moment he kissed Historia's hand his future self was pulling the strings one way or another, but there's a definite continuity of character there that's not immediately apparent and really comes to a head in chapter 130 or so. More broadly, I applaud the decision to do a large timeskip and show what happened afterwards — when you see the Corps back in Liberio you cheer for them (for a bit, they are engaging in some serious collateral damage) but it's only later that you realize how cornered and bereft of options they are, driven to a head in the "peace conference" flashback when you get to see what the bleeding-heart pro-Eldian activists consist of.
  • Related to that, the whole framing of the Eldia-Marley conflict and how it affects the characters in the middle of it and the decisions they make (like Eren, Zeke, Reiner, Ymir, Gabi and more) is excellently done. I'd been spoiled on "Eren becomes the bad guy and tries to kill everyone", but I'd underestimated how much effort had been put into making this a natural progression of his character (not to mention how it affects him personally — there's entire chapters dedicated to the true effects of the Rumbling). I have a lot to say on this topic but this post is already running long, I'll come back to this later.
  • Reiner's a close second to Eren in the running for the most interesting character, by the way.
  • The story's far from flawless — it has a fair bit of contrivances, borderline asspulls, that are necessary to get it where it needs to be. Everything from the titan that ate Eren at Trost not deciding to chew (which would've left us with an Eldian restorationist and partner of Grisha with the Attack and Founding titans, an interesting what-if for sure), to Eren just so happening to punch the Smiling Titan which just so happens to be Dina Fritz (the whole deal with royal blood, really — it's consistent, but there's never a good reason given for it other than "the plot requires it" and it could've been done more elegantly), Rod Reiss having a bottle of "armor serum" on him (presumably Armored Titan spinal fluid) which is never explained or elaborated upon before or afterwards (unless you count bird Falco and that's a stretch), so on and so forth. Still, the goods way outweigh the bads. Remains to see if it'll stick the landing though.

[up][up] Good post, agree with it. On your lost note, I have sort of wondered if some of those contrivances are down to Ymir. Eren asks her during their Big Hug "if she led him there", and while we never get an answer nor explanation for that question, it could be she have pulled a few small strings to get the plot going.

Considering she's driving the Nine Titans' clones and multiple victims of the Rumbling have seen her in their last moments (not to mention timey wimey bullshit is squarely in her domain), I have a feeling that she's got more agency than she appears to. It doesn't diminish Eren's culpability, but the Rumbling is as much her rampage as his.

Probably involving the Smiling Titan in some shape or form. Actually I wonder if Ymir might end up deciding to kill EVERYONE but Eren instead of what he wants. Maybe that was the original Mist esque ending? surprised

Ymir doesn't have a reason to spare the Eldians, really. That would be a nicely tragic ending, but I don't think that's where we're heading.
