Lupin and his mates already did travelled through time, even though it wasn't by their own accord, as Luigisan pointed out
(and they found Fujiko's ancestor, who was a thief herself, iirc).
But I suspect Lupin would probably have found the possibility of him going through time to be: a) too easy (at least when it comes to going to the past); and b) to be a complicated mess (time travel laws and paradoxes and all that).
As for the new series, it's fairly reasonable to assume that it's set immediately after Part IV: Lupin has to leave Italy after all those events and will go to the next available place. And it doesn't take too long to get from Italy to France (even through train, which is how the gang disappears at the end of Part IV's last episode) , after all.

Simulcast streaming, starting tomorrow!!!
Link to TRS threads in project mode here. It's also a good thing that they showed Lupin as someone who can easily adapt to the times, by using some fancy tech. The fact that it's shaped like a monocle is a nice reference to his grandfather.
I quite liked this opening episode. Especially the car chase scene. And the end credits theme being sung by Fujiko.
While I'm not entirely sold on the hacker girl yet, the setting update that takes into account our current realities (digital currencies, with the shadyness it involves, and the pervasiveness of social media) is certainly an interesting challenge.

Half of the jokes in the episode seemed to be Were Still Relevant Dammit, But Done Well. I loved the banter that followed from "must be the gasoline".

Apparently, some of the assassins that adhered to the Death Day challenge launched by the Marco Polo folks come from the original manga.
Also, the way Lupin dealt with the alley hoodlums was great (and it showed how serious he can really get).
On another note, it's really great to see Zenigata continue to be shown as being competent and serious.

I loved it, of course. The problems I see are that it is much more tightly tied to the previous episode than I'm used to, and neither are exactly great for a first-time introduction to the franchise.
The bounty hunters are a good example. If you do have complete encyclopedic knowledge of Lupin III, you might find a reference or two to a previous installment. Good Mythology Gag. But rather than each member facing a single Bounty Hunter, they're facing at least three. Having seen any installment where any of the gang can win a one-on-one fight against a Bounty Hunter, this becomes a powerful scene, and we actually do question, "Wait, can they actually get out of it this time? These are usually your movie climax villains, and there's more than usual!" But if you haven't seen the gang fight mano-a-mano conflicts, it doesn't hold the same dramatic increase in threat.
Overall, I'm thinking I would recommend watching Green vs. Red before this series. (Referring to order of viewing, quality is being withheld until more episodes.)
Adding a subordinate to the Inspector has been really useful for demonstrating subtle skills.

Link to TRS threads in project mode here.Thoughts on episode 3:
It's good to know that things are beginning to pick up in regards to the hacker girl and her dynamic with Lupin. But I definitely wasn't expecting a background like hers, that's for sure. It got dark real fast, and without showing the disturbing stuff that usually comes with that sort of thing.
On another note, it doesn't sound convincing to me the whole thing of Lupin and Fujiko pretending to not care for each other. It does shake up things a bit with her joining the game and trying to kill him, tho. Also, I could swear the drawers/animators took their sweet ass time drawing Fujiko's... curves and tracts of land.

I wonder if it's going to a direct sequel to the Italian Adventure, since they share the same jacket.
