Prom's new found love of making avatars and his current Urban Menace avatar gave me the idea of putting together a series of Ice-T avatars spanning his career and multiple incarnations.

Collect Them All!

Breakin' Ice-T—Fresh Upstart. An inchoate rapper, the young Ice-T lacks both a defined sound and a stylistic wardrobe, seemingly throwing outfits together based on whatever cheap, dumb shit he can find at a thrift store or yard sale. Just like in Saints Row, one must start at the bottom before working up to the top, and only then will one finally be able to afford to wear decent clothes. Sophomore Ice-T—Innocent Rebellion. Now having been around the block once or twice, Ice-T has earned enough experience and income to groom himself in the contemporary style of the 1980s, complete with an expensive jacket and (not fully pictured) iconic Mercedes necklace. He has also chosen to add the affectation of a black beret. This hat indicates an interest in the political ideals of the Black Panther movement, if not a direct allegiance to this cause. The juxtaposition of symbols of wealth with symbols of resistance suggest a commercialization of uprising. Capitalism, like water, flows down, finding the lowest point and exploiting it. Body Count Ice-T—Existential Menace. Violence is conveyed by Ice-T's posture and manner of dress. He wears a do-rag, dark sunglasses and a leather jacket. Common garb of gang members. Beneath his jacket (and on the other members of his band) we see prison uniforms, as if the band are inmates escaped from a prison. Ice-T threatens not only the individual body but the societal body. Ice-T describes a world upended, wherein what most perceive as order is actually oppression and only by directly confronting the pillars of this order (police, KKK parents, etc) and shooting them while they are eating donuts or having sex with their daughters can we escape to perfect freedom. Kangaroo Ice-T—Anthropomorphic Resistance. Transformed like Gregor Samsa, Ice-T does not wilt away in his bedroom or become crushed underfoot, he is a dynamic figure of real human emotions. The common perception of anthropomorphic creatures as cute cartoons is subverted here as Ice-T becomes grotesque. This is what Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck might look like if they were flesh and blood beings created by military experiments. Like Ice-T, they would probably be very angry. Johnny Mnemonic Ice-T—Postmodern Subversion. The revolutionary call of Body Count has been answered by a future society, and our civilzation, like the bridge inhabited by Ice-T and his followers, is recognizable only as a relic of the past. Whereas Body Count Ice-T was a prophet of destruction, Johnny Mnemonic Ice-T (JM Ice-T) is a new pillar of the post-structural society. Symbols of the past—bridges, BMX goggles, dolphins—derive new meaning in the world JM Ice-T is constructing from the ruins. However, JM Ice-T is not unchallenged, a hegemon in the form of a transnational corporation, or zaibatsu, threatens the fragile world of JM Ice-T. In his continuing struggle he promises only hardship. Law & Order Ice-T—Plump and Saintly. Having past through the crucible of adulthood, Ice-T enters midlife fattened by wealth and content to serve the very agents of oppression which he fought against in his youth. This is the arc of America, of the immigrants and of the young, to be oppressed by individual and institutions, to fight back, to rise through hardship and to achieve happiness in later years. And then, as is so often the case, to feel entitled by this very struggle to wealth and privilege and hostile to encroachment by the young and the immigrants. Put another way, Ice-T is now the willing servant of the very zaibatsu he once would have dropped a burning car upon. Husband Ice-T—Cartoon Couple. Having completed his transformation into a living cartoon character, Ice-T has used his new power and wealth to create a flesh and blood wife from an R. Crumb illustration. She raps about shopping and orgasms and appears on the cover of magazines for butts. He dresses like he's trying to disappear into the background set of a Paula Abdul video from 1988 and his pimp bravado, more extreme than ever, registers as unintentional self-parody. Both Ice-T and Coco are less believable than Kangaroo Ice-T.

Continuity Reboot Ice-T—Menacing Street Thug. L&O Ice-T and Husband Ice-T being significant deviations from previous evolutions. Ice-T looks back to the past and attempts to reignite the spark of violent urban renewal and revolution and social upheaval that he once stood for. But is anyone even listening anymore? Continuity Reboot Ice-T back in his old Body Count Ice-T clothes looks older, much more depressing, and very drunk as he shouts cuss words and death threats at the very few who still do pay him any attention.

Gamer Ice-T—Mostly Harmless. He has purchased the edition of Modern Warfare 2 with the low light goggles and is so excited he took a picture posing with them. This is the sort of thing a fifteen-year-old does, but Ice-T is so immersed in the culture of his past oppressor that he now wallows in juvenilia, bragging about playing World of Warcraft and appearing as a character in Gears of War 3. Is he not entitled to enjoy what he earned? He certainly thinks so.
