Our Next Feature Presentation: The Stuff (10/12)

Join Us Saturday, October 12th @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

So tonight, we're running Mercury Rising.

It's the story of an autistic 9-year-old child who is able to crack a super duper, incredibly difficult CIA / Spook code that the Feds dared to print in a puzzle book. Now, Alec Baldwin wants the kid dead (seriously), and super cop John McClane is thrust into a situation where he must protect the same kid.

Yeah, I'm just going to pretend that this is a PG-13 Die Hard sequel.

Alright, I'm starting us off with the next episode of that new British sketch comedy show I found last night, Bruiser.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Bruce Willis is protecting a 9-year-old autistic child from Alec Baldwin in Mercury Rising.

I'm having second thoughts on the idea of a Tobe Hooper horror movie filmed in the United Arab Emirates, so instead, I'm swapping that out in favor of Jessica Alba and The Eye (which may actually be even stupider).

Why did you change your mind? (I know nothing about, say, any political situations or things related to the movie, or actor, or country right now. Did it have to do with one of those?)

[up]I just happened to find The Eye on YouTube this morning when I was about to look up the trailer for the other movie, and I figured that this title would be a better fit for us. Mind, we've watched a good number of titles from the late director Tobe Hooper (including Eaten Alive, The Funhouse, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Part II, and Lifeforce ... plus he co-directed Body Bags, which we revisited last month; he's also responsible for the original TCM movie and Poltergeist); what we have seen of his film work has been well-received... but the quality of his "later" work from the mid-90's onwards (which we haven't actually showcased yet) took a drastically different turn, and a movie from 2013 may not be the best one to take a crack at first (especially when he has much "better" SyFy Channel "staples" to his credit).

Anyway, hop on in early for a few new videos from cRiT1KaL and Everything Is Terrible, plus some other stuff.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we got Jessica Alba in The Eye. Hell, let's walk into this expecting Mark Hamill's segment from Body Bags ...except with Jessica Alba.

Bonsai picked this "proto-music television" piece from late 60's West German TV that essentially functions as a collection of music videos and performances called Ideas.

The closest I can find to any short clip of this is, what I assume, the title song that lent the production its name:

Some stuff about Ideas from the gal who requested it.

  • It's actually called Idea, after the Bee Gees album of the same name, which is my favorite album from them and also why the special is made; to help promote it.
  • The special has never been legally released on any home media format, but thank the Lord for the bootleg circuit.
    • However, the version that's widely available online has a time code thingy hard coded on the top of the screen.
  • It's a nice little time capsule for what I'd like to call the Bee Gees' 'teen idol' period.

We had a somewhat different group with us compared to usual. Two of Eevee's friends joined us.

Anyway, it got ★★★★. Not unanimous, due to one 3 vote, but it got it.

Oh, HO-OH-HOOOOOOoooooooooooo...

For this week's Kung Fu Friday, we present Jet Li in some late 90's Hong Kong action fare.

Jet Li plays an inexperienced "hitman in training" set out on collecting a large bounty on another hitman known only as "The King of Killers."

This is The Contract Killer...

This evening, we're rerunning a Lifetime movie about a trio of high school teens who are thrust into an extraordinary situation where they must rob a bank in order to acquire ransom money to rescue one of their kidnapped friends from Mexican gangsters.

It's exactly like the movie Sugar & Spice ...except with Lifetime drama in place of comedy... and kidnapping by Mexican gangsters in place of a teen pregnancy.

This is Teenage Bank Heist...

That movie previously got a 3 from us, and it was a lot of fun.

One thing I find interesting when reading the comments on YouTube is the large number of people saying that they're from Africa (specifically, Kenya is named more than other countries) and that they like the movie. It seems to have a lot of appeal in Africa for some reason. Anyway, it's a lot of fun, so definitely check this one out, and tell other people who enjoy cheesy fun as well!

Tonight, we experience a Teenage Bank Heist! It's one of the more fun movies we'd previously watched, and a previous ★★★, and if you missed it the first time, you're in for a real treat!

Before that, our preshow will be a cartoon that should have never existed.

I got another movie suggestion and this time, it's not anything that has to do with music! [lol]

The movie I'm suggesting this go-around is the 1980 BBC adaptation of William Shakespeare's The Tempest. If you know about The Tempest, there's no need to explain. It is over two hours long and it stars Michael Hordern, Derek Godfrey, Nigel Hawthorne, David Dixon, and Andrew Sachs.

Welp, thank you, Lionsgate, for making this pizza shirt free to watch on YouTube: 2008's film adaptation of the 1930's comic book The Spirit, directed by Frank Miller for some peculiar reason that definitely has nothing at all to do with successful movie adaptations of Sin City and 300 (which he did not direct).

A dead cop returns from the great beyond, dons a domino mask to "fight against the bad forces in Central City." His greatest foe is Samuel L. Jackson.

Then, at the top of the coming hour... Frank Miller, of all people, brings us The Spirit.

Tonight, we're rewatching the rather cartoonish American Western-Comedy The Villain, starring Kirk Douglas, Ann-Margaret, Arnold Schwarzenegger (in a movie role pre-dating both Conan the Barbarian AND The Jayne Mansfield Story), and Paul Lynde.
