Our Next Feature Presentation: The Monster Club (10/21)

Join Us Monday, October 21st @ ~8:00PM (US/EDT) Here: http://cytu.be/r/TroperCoven

For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over SEVEN years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

All I really know about tonight's movie is that it's an Australian family movie, and, if this clip is anything to go by, even Australian family movies are as discomforting as the usual Australian horror/thriller fare, which sure is an eye-opening revelation...

This is called Crackers.

So we lead off with Lowtax playing... "PiiSim" (Trust me, it's worth watching).

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we got a miserable bastard of an Australian movie that isn't a horror film in the form of something called Crackers...

We're so lucky to be getting a hold of this so quickly.

We've already watched Keanu Reeves in Replicas ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]) earlier this year and were ready to deem it "The Worst Movie of 2019," but now we're most definitely getting some stiff competition from Fred Durst (of all human beings) directing John Travolta "somewhere on the spectrum" and, my favorite, Devon Sawa in some obsessive fan story called The Fanatic.

Devon Sawa, what the fuck happened to you? You were the shit around the turn of the millennium in Idle Hands, SLC Punk, and Final Destination (If you can't remember any of those movies—only one of which we've seen in the chat—you may still recognize Mr. Sawa from a much younger age in the role of "Human Casper," whispering the immortal words, "Can I keep you?"). And now you're playing asshole victim opposite demented Travolta...

Alright... Starting off with one more look forward, into the past, with Armando Iannucci's Time Trumpet.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, it's John Travolta in The Role of a Lifetime opposite Devon Sawa in Fred Durst's The Fanatic!

I decided to open every review of The Fanatic that Rotten Tomatoes linked to and do a Ctrl-F for "autis" (so "autism" and "autistic" will both be caught by that) to find what they have to say about the main character's supposed condition. Most review didn't even mention it.

Of those that did, they were divided into three types:

  • Those that accepted that the character had autism, and didn't question its portrayal (while still bashing the movie).
  • Those that said the character is "supposed to have" autism or Aspergers (Aspergers is autism, people!), and ended it there.
  • Those that said the movie's portrayal of autism or alleged autism was super offensive and unrealistic.

I was glad to see that last group, but disappointed to not see it show up as much as it should have. The actual understanding around autism is still pathetically low.

One review said that this movie would have autism rights groups protesting it. Nah, it didn't make enough money for anyone to notice it. It made $3,153 upon release.

We haven't watched a new giallo in quite a while, so here's one with a most befitting title: The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire

And a plot synopsis that could easily be a product of the always wonderful Giallo Generator:

In Dublin, a young woman is brutally murdered in her home by a maniac that throws acid in her face and then slits her throat with a razor. Her mangled body is later discovered in the trunk of a limousine owned by the Swiss Ambassador Sobiesky. The Ambassador, who was the dead woman's lover, refuses to cooperate with the police due to his diplomatic immunity. John Norton, an ex-cop famed for his brutal working methods, is brought in to help and gets too deeply involved when he starts an affair with the Ambassador's beautiful step-daughter. Meanwhile, the brutal killings continue...

Featuring Luigi Pistilli (famed for appearing in many spaghetti westerns, including Sergio Leone titles, and perhaps most recognizable here as the male lead from Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, [awesome][awesome]) as our detective protagonist... and Nazi character actor (that is to say, "a character actor who very frequently played Nazis") Anton Diffring as the Swiss Ambassador.

I miscalculated. Tonight's intended feature presentation is a non-embeddable YouTube video, so we'll instead be keeping things in the same spirit and revisit another Italian murder flick, Lamberto Bava's Delirium ([awesome][awesome][awesome] ...with muzak by Simon Boswell)

But, first, we'll get things started with another look forward, into the past, with Armando Iannucci's Time Trumpet...

Tonight's movie is a bit of a mystery to me. I understand it's horrible, and it's main draw is being a low-budget vehicle specifically made for Michael Biehn (The movie is directed by his wife) and also "co-stars" Tia Carrere of Wayne's World, True Lies, and Showdown in Little Tokyo ([awesome][awesome]). Together, the two of them conspire to commit serial murder while raising a kid in a cabin in the woods... or something like that.

So get ready for The Girl...

Hey, have we ever considered doing something like we did for Escape from New York and Escape from L.A. but with other duologies? My personal pick for doing something like that is a weekend with Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel.

I mean, it's not like we haven't done great movies in the past.

[up]True, but that would still be cool if we did all of them in one weekend.

Zero Hour on Saturday.

Airplane! on Sunday.

Airplane II on Monday.

And I'd watch every second.

I had to be hospitalized for frostbite because of the douche chills The Fanatic gave me just 10 minutes in.

This was unpleasant all the way through. All bets were off when Moose killed the maid and no one noticed. The "you like Limp Bizkit?" scene burned the goddamn roulette table. Not to mention how Dora just lay dead on the lawn for over a day, or how the young girlfriend is such an enabler, GAH! An absolute X for me. This ties with Airplane Mode for the worst film I've seen from here.

Keep on truckin'!
Sep 19th 2019 at 9:40:10 AM

[up]I love that new avatar, LOL! I don't think The Fanatic was anywhere NEAR as bad as Airplane Mode, though. It's pretty fucking bad and uncomfortable, alright, but I would still be willing to rewatch it at a later date. The movie is a peculiar blend of mean-spirited exploitation and illogical plot points (like what you pointed out about the housemaid's corpse going unnoticed for... DAYS, I think) that turns a bad movie into a truly astonishing car wreck that becomes difficult to turn away from.

Anyway, tonight, we got an 1980's vigilante movie about some Vietnam War Buddies regrouping to clear out a street gang taking over their neighborhood: The Annihilators.

Oh, HO-OH-HOOOOOOoooooooooo...

This Kung Fu Friday brings us the story of an outsider moving to Thailand, in pursuit of a new life. After being robbed of everything he's got, he makes friends with a kickboxer, and the two of them wind up in the world of underground fighting to make the money they desperately need to survive. However, as countless other movies of this sort has told us, survival ain't easy in this dangerous world, and losing is never an option.

Hang with us tonight, and we'll have ourselves a Brawl...

Tonight, we kick off with a revisit of their first leading vehicle which lent them their nickname, The Barbarians ([awesome][awesome][awesome])...
