For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

Today marks seven (7) whole years since we "officially" made our presence known to the TVT community and laid our roots in this little thread that has continued to grow and grow ever since, and I dedicate this night to everyone over the years who has believed in our project and has participated in any capacity.

And so to help bring this year's anniversary retrospective to a close... We revisit one "Daddy" Derek Savage's magnum opus Cool Cat: The Kids Superhero (formerly Cool Cat Saves the Kids). Before there were countless YouTube reviews and "copyright protection" controversies, our group brought an unprecedented, record-setting 22 people together to see it here first!

I'd also argue that it's the only movie we've ever watched that has been nearly impossible for our own ratings system to properly gauge. Some people thought it was immense fun like Starcrash, others thought it was torture, and a few even thought it landed between the two extremes. Out of nearly 2000 individual titles viewed, this is has been the hardest movie for us to peg down, but one thing I know we can ALL agree on is that it must be seen to be believed.

It absolutely must be seen to be believed. Please spread the word as much as possible!

I have last minute babysitting today (at my house, not theirs), but the movie will run, and Sean is available to start it.

Let's get as many people in here as possible!

Ah, man. John and I have school (because in LV school starts a week or two before other school districts), and with that comes homework, hence why we haven't been attending the movies recently. The fact that we have to miss Cool Cat sucks as much as Coolville.

Just in case anybody has more than two hours to kill, while trying to look up more on what Jason Johnson, the actor inside the Cool Cat costume who also gave the character his "distinctive" voice, I actually managed to find a phone interview uploaded just a week-and-a-half ago which sheds more light and perspective on what it's like being around and working with Derek Savage and just how or why he's had a falling out with him over playing the character.

Funny enough, as it turns out, their working relationship has turned so bitter that Derek Savage's latest "Cool Cat" short uploaded to YouTube in the past month (more on that in the chat later tonight) was taken down briefly after Mr. Johnson actually filed a copyright claim on the video because Derek Savage was using old, old footage of him in the costume without his permission (or credit)... and in the embedded interview, they repeatedly refer to Derek Savage under the alias "Eric Garbage" for some reason I can't quite figure out.

Some other intriguing stories Mr. Johnson brings up about Daddy Derek that I've heard in just the first half of this interview (so far):

  • Savage's reasons for recasting "Momma Cat's" voice for Cool Cat: Kids Superhero involving Savage being turned down for a date repeatedly by the original actress and bursting into her apartment when Jason Johnson was around thinking that they were having a secret romance behind his back.
  • Savage convincing Jason Johnson to call someone's niece for their birthday for a measly $20 (which Savage still didn't pay) only to discover that said niece was a teenager and not a little girl.

Anyway, hop on in for some Derek Savage insanity, and Cool Cat: Kids Superhero!

Oh, HO-OH-HOOOOOOOOOooooooooooo...

Our anniversary season is technically over, but I still got one more classic movie left over that we didn't have any other room for which should work out just as well for Kung Fu Friday.

It's the greatest movie ever about turning gymnastics into a fighting martial art and using it to help advance the Reagan Administration's batshit ambition to develop the capability to destroy nuclear warheads with lasers from outer space (that was a real thing in the 80's, really): Gymkata

Alright, we return to never-before-seen content tonight with the 1987 horror movie Prison, about the spirit of a long-dead prisoner out for revenge and haunting the prison's new governor.

With Viggo Mortensen, Lincoln Kilpatrick, and Tiny Lister.

I've been listening to more of that conversation with Cool Cat's original actor. Wow. Been learning some interesting stuff.

Derek Savage seems to be unaware that positive reviews of his movie are sarcastic, and that people who crowdfund them are doing so ironically.

The voice actor also said that Vivica A. Fox's advice on how to deal with bullying was completely stupid.

The host also talked with him about how no actual children - of any kind - would want to watch something like this.

The voice actor said that he stuck around partly in the hopes that it would help his future acting career ("people would know me by this character, and that has happened"), and also because he was afraid that whoever replaced him would suck as the new voice of Cool Cat.

He did credit Derek with giving him freedom to give Cool Cat more "physicality" - the freedom to move the way he wanted to. He made some "cat-like" movements to try to give the character more personality, like it was his instinct to give the character a bit "more" to him. His attempt to have Cool Cat scratch himself instead accidentally looked like, um, something else.

Tonight, a film directed by and starring somebody named Wings Hauser (never heard of him before, but that name is awesome) and a screenplay penned by Hollywood hack Joseph Merhi.

Our story concerns a cinematographer and his assistant who entice aspiring young actors and actresses to audition for their own movie... except, once the filming starts, the cameraman actually kills them.

It's The Art of Dying...

Listening to the Cool Cat interview more. Cool Cat's actor explained why he refused to appear in Cool Cat Stops a School Shooting. He thought it was an awful idea for many reasons: a costumed character being involved with shooting kids (Dirty Dog was gonna do it), it would trigger terrible memories for people involved with school shootings, how would you explain it to the kids who play the role of extras, it would send terrible messages about how school shootings work, and it would be impossible to take seriously due to the use of costumed animal characters. That's five reasons right there!

[up]In a word (which I don't even think is used in the the course of the interview), the idea amounts to exploitation. One facet never addressed in that interview, although they acknowledge the video in which the idea first surfaced, in his YouTube pitch to PewDiePie, Garbage/Savage says he wants said "school shooting" film to "star" someone with Autism and/or Downs Syndrome... What the hell is a potential viewer supposed to make of a school shooting movie where a kid with Autism or Downs is terrorized, anyway? (It was already terrible enough when Uwe Boll made a school shooting movie where a handful of the eventual victims were revealed to have raped a mentally disabled girl, and I'm glad I'm the only person here who should remember that)

Anyway, pre-show tonight is entirely comprised of recent content from cRiT1KaL.

Then, at the top of the coming hour, we exhibit, The Art of Dying.

[up]Something something English food something...

Anyway, we got a hell of a double header lined up for tonight and tomorrow.

Starting things off, Kurt Russel delivers his best and most iconic movie role as Snake Plissken in John Carpenter's Escape from New York, also featuring Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, and Tom Atkins—a collection of actors only rivaled by the film's sequel.

So what do we have here... "Kay's (Not So) Good Cooking" and an ALL NEW gaming video upload from Lowtax (WAO!)

Then, at the top of the coming hour, Kurt Russel is Snake Plissken, the President (of a future American police state) has been kidnapped, and he's a bad enough dude to bring him back in John Carpenter's Escape from New York!

[up]What??????????

Anyway, we follow up with where we ended last night with the mid-90's sequel to last night's film: John Carpenter's Escape from LA. It's basically more of the exact same thing we saw last night, except with a different American city-turned-prison colony, a different surprising cast of names and faces around Kurt Russel, and some horribly dated CGI.

It's easy to take a shit on this movie in a couple of key areas (again, anything with CGI could resemble a highlight reel from The Asylum), but I'd argue that it's still as much fun as the original.

We haven't watched any sci-fi oriented anime in a long, long while, so tonight we follow a fantastic adventure quest in Space Firebird (aka Phoenix 2772)...
