For the uninitiated... A contingent of tropers (mostly from across America) holds regular get-togethers over the Interwebs on this site called Synchtube which lets individuals, such as ourselves, open and join in text-based chatrooms within typical web browsers (Firefox, Chrome, et. al.) that allow the chat participants to view YouTube videos in synchronization with everyone else present (without even needing to set up an account)... and we've decided to use said chatrooms to play cheeseball webvideos and feature-length movies found in the public domain which stretch all the way from letters B to Z, which everyone subsequently riffs on a la MST3K.

For over EIGHT years, everybody who gets involved mostly finds good enjoymentnote  in calling out tropes that are recognized in the videos and stories and coming up with jokes to fling back at whatever's happening on the screen, many of which turn into various in-jokes and running gags (a Coven Glossary is kept and maintained for everyone's help and convenience HERE) to repeat in the chat.

We're always looking for new ways to better coordinate and expand our activities and are more than happy to welcome newcomers interested in joining our gatherings.

I had honestly been planning on leaving the server for a while and only got around to actually doing so yesterday. I just kinda lost interest and decided to let it go.

But I didn't want to jilt this even if I left. Riffing movies with you guys is fun!

Blocked due to copyright outside the US. I looked for other copies. Second blocked due to copyright outside the US. Third blocked due to copyright outside the US.

I'm trying giving them American proxy websites to use so they can disguise themselves as Americans.

EDIT: Didn't work. Site wouldn't load video or chat, apparently, through multiple US proxy sites. Damn. Fortunately, other Americans later joined us.

[up]I'm surprised it was available for free viewing on YouTube at all. I wasn't aware that there was a region block when I uploaded it tor our playlist, though. I usually get notifications about that.

Anyway, tonight's feature is something I've wanted to touch on for a while, if for no other reason than just to showcase anything with Christopher Lee as a villain, but I should still come with a disclaimer:

The evil Dr. Fu Manchu in his own way has become an archetypical supervillain through numerous appearances in books, movies, television, and other media throughout the 20th Century... but not without being made a hateful ethnic stereotype, often associated with "Yellow Peril" hysteria in the western world which popularized the character, and frequently portrayed by non-Asian, white actors (which, itself, would ultimately become the subject of mockery with an uncredited Nicolas Cage appearing as the character in a fake movie trailer in Grindhouse).

Christopher Lee, here, would portray the character in five films throughout the 1960's, the first in that series being tonight's film, The Face of Fu Manchu.

(And, yeah, this isn't running on a Kung Fu Friday because the character and the stories in which he appears in are not principally action-driven or known for martial arts fighting. These stories are principally intended as crime thrillers.)

Then at the top of the coming hour, Christopher Lee... is... Fu Manchu in The Face of Fu Manchu.

As I was saying last night in the chat, we're looking to begin our annual Halloween movie season this coming Saturday (the night after our annual "Kung Fu Friday Day"), and I'd like to open the floor to anybody who might have some titles in mind for us to watch, along with another handful of our usual holiday favorites. I know a couple of people already tried making suggestions in the chat last night, but I remind you that I want to read suggestions HERE so this can be up for discussion where it won't distract from the rest of the regular action and activity in the chatroom.

Remember, we generally try to focus on fun, campy, and corny works of horror from the 80's and 90's, but I'll listen to any sort of suggestion anyone may have. I know Ship had already brought up that 2001 remake of The Lift ([awesome][awesome]) the other day, which might be a decent option, if anybody here would like to sound off on that.

Anyway, what can I say about tonight's feature? It's a mid-90's direct-to-video movie starring Traci Lords, the director was married to her at the time this was made, and Richard Pepin and Joseph Merhi picked this up for production and distribution, because they'd throw money at just about anything.

This is supposed to be a serious, action-driven crime plot about two cat burglars who intend to rob a set of stolen diamonds from the mafia, except persistent police detectives, another scam artist, and a rival mob group. ...But, c'mon, this is a Traci Lords movie made for PM Entertainment.

The title of this evening's entertainment is Ice.

Forced to call an audible... I don't like that YouTube no longer tells you when a video is made non-embeddable when you look up an "embed" code. Now, I don't learn about it until the moment I add it to the playlist before we begin.

But tonight's movie will be a (hopefully) far better gangster movie: The Last Days of Frankie the Fly, starring the incredible ensemble of Dennis Hopper (as the title character), Kiefer Sutherland, Michael Madsen, and Darryl Hannah!

But, first up, we got I'm With Busey and a new Super Deluxe series taking the piss out of YouTube video game tips & tricks videos.

GAZE UPON THE BREADTH OF MY SUGGESTIONS AND DESPAIR!

SORTED BY CATEGORY!

YOU SHALL STRUGGLE IN VAIN TO KEEP YOUR HEAD ABOVE THE DELUGE AND MY WORDS SHALL FILL YOUR LUNGS UNTIL YOU BURST!

Zombie films:

  • City of the Living Dead- A gory, nasty piece of work similar to his (Fulci's) other work (seen by us) Zombi 2. It's a wonder that this one wasn't a "Video Nasty."

Trailer:

  • Zombi 2- I nominate this for a rewatch.

  • Day of the Dead: Contagium- This seems to be universally reviled as one of the worst zombie films and one of the worst films ever made; certainly one of the worst sequels to a successful film. I haven't personally seen it, but I'm willing to give it a go if we're in the mood for pain.

Trailer:

  • Day of the Dead (2008 remake)- Speaking of shitty, unspeakable sequels, this is a real contender! It has Nick Cannon in it for some... reason! Oh God, this film fucks with zombie conventions so much, it would be comical if it wasn't so utterly SHIT. It's not even like Return of the Living Dead where it played with George Romero's archetypes, this film just doesn't know what the fuck it is. It's not so much of a remake as a re-imagining, and it's not so much a re-imagining as it is pissing on the ashes on a now-creatively bankrupt sub-genre of horror.

Trailer:

  • Let Sleeping Corpses Lie AKA: The Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue- This is a strange one. This is a 1974 Spanish-Italian zombie film made when the idea of cannibalistic shambling corpses was still fresh. This became a bit of a cult film in the years to follow. It's supposed to be pretty good, though. I'd be interested in giving it a whirl sometime.

Trailer:

  • Return of the Living Dead II- I've wanted to watch the shitty sequels to one of our favorites for a while. I haven't personally seen this one, but it's supposed to be shit.

Trailer:

  • Return of the Living Dead III- I remember actually liking this. As far as sequels go to a classic, at least it has its own personality. Also, directed by Brian Yuzna.

Trailer:

  • Return of the Living Dead IV: Necropolis- Okay, now we're in the thick of the septic sludge. I've seen this one, and boy does it fucking stink. You have no idea. This is like a shitty Resident Evil plot pitch made into an even worse film. You've been warned.

Trailer:

  • Return of the Living Dead: Rave to the Grave- Christ, I hate this fucking movie. At least it has some decent gore, unlike the last one. That's literally all I can "recommend". It's... it's not good. It's really not. IT FUCKING MISSES THE POINT OF THE ORIGINAL ENTIRELY HOLY FUCKING BALLS OH MY GOD IT MAKES ME SO FUCKING MAD! You know how the original was made to subvert Romero zombie tropes? Yeah, well THIS ONE KIND OF FORGOT ABOUT THAT! This is like if someone made a Scream sequel and made it a straightforward brainless slasher without the meta commentary!

Trailer:

(I may edit this post later if I think of more zombie films I want to see here)

John Carpenter films:

  • Prince of Darkness- This is one of Carpenter's least discussed films. It's more of a cult film with a somewhat religious plot (with weird twists). I won't say more. I've always been intrigued by this one.

Trailer:

  • The Fog- Not to be confused with The Mist. Some consider this one of Carpenter's weakest entries, but I'm willing to give it a go.

Trailer:

  • Halloween III: Season of the Witch- A coven classic. I vote we run it at some point. If not, I'll spam the thread with the Silver Shamrock jingle until we do.

Other:

  • Pumpkinhead III: Ashes to Ashes- Since we've already endured the anguish that is Halloween II: Blood Wings, why should we not hurt ourselves more? Give in. Give in to pain. Give in to hate. Give in to me. Give in.

Trailer:

  • Pumpkinhead IV: Blood Feud- This, along with the previous film, was featured on the Sy Fy channel multiple times. Do I need to say more?

Trailer:

There. Are you content? Are you pleased? Are you happy? Shall I feed you more? Shall I force feed you? Shall I pour more down your gullet? Hmm?

[up]Alright, so, all-in-all, and provided we can get a hold of any of these titles, along with Ship's recommendation of The Shaft and MAYBE Repossessed, I really think we should get around to The Fog this season just because it's been taking us long enough just to finally mention it by name, and Halloween III should get a rewatch if only because we didn't run it last year.

We definitely need to get around to Return of the Living Dead Parts 2 & 3 at some point, but that always feels tricky because we've always traditionally ended every Halloween season with the original Return film. Still we need to watch those at some point.

I'm also thinking we should get around to the Robert Rodriguez film The Faculty for once, along with some other great titles for us to rewatch like Trick or Treat (the 1986 slasher and the later anthology movie), Student Bodies, BioZombie, and Satan's Little Helper (Why do I always love BioZombie so much?), among others.

If anyone else would like to contribute to this discussion in any way or form, please speak now or forever hold your peace.

Anyway, tonight we got a movie based on a Disney theme park attraction, in which an anthropomorphic child bear (voiced by Haley Joel Osment) who was adopted by Stephen Tobolowski dreams of reuniting the Country Bears Jamboree and saving their old concert hall from being destroyed by a greedy, money-grubbing Christopher Walken (who is strangely absent from this trailer, below).

Plus assorted cameos from Elton John, Queen Latifah, Willie Nelson, Don Henley, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Setzer, and Wyclef Jean.

Here's The Country Bears...

I'd kind of like to do Species at some point during the holiday season. Also, we've done Creepshow 3 but not the original, and I hear that movie is an acid trip and a half.

[up][up]The original Creepshow would definitely be worthwhile for us.

I was going to throw out some ideas but my damn computer took forever to update.

Anyways, I might suggest: The Brain [1988], if we haven't seen it already, The Twilight Zone Movie, if not, a rewtach, a Wicker Man bifecta of the original and remake, Bats, the 1982 Jacques Tourner remake of Cat People, and Nosferatu the Vampyre, in addition to Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow.

Alright, so here's a list of what I'm currently looking to settle on for our 19-day Halloween season, provided we can manage to get a hold of every single one of these. Nearly all of these movies are gonna have to be set up for ourselves on Google. These are listed in no particular order, although items 10-19 are movies we've previously watched:

  • 1) Wacko
  • 2) The Shaft (Down)
  • 3) Repossessed
  • 4) The Brain
  • 5) The Fog (1980)
  • 6) Prince of Darkness
  • 7) Return of the Living Dead Part 2
  • 8) Creepshow
  • 9) The Faculty
  • 10) Halloween III: Season of the Witch
  • 11) Student Bodies
  • 12) Satan's Little Helper
  • 13) Trick or Treat (1986)
  • 14) Trick 'r Treat (200X)
  • 15) BioZombie
  • 16) Pumpkinhead
  • 17) The Black Cat (1966)
  • 18) It Follows
  • 19) Return of the Living Dead

And tonight is a repeat viewing of the pre-historic comedy film Caveman, starring Ringo Starr, Dennis Quaid, Barbara Bach, and Shelly Long. Be sure to brush up on your "caveman" language and comprehension before viewing.

Oh, Ho-Oh-HOOOOoooooooooo...

Tonight, we recognize the anniversary of our very first Kung Fu Friday before the beginning of our Halloween season, and there's no better way to celebrate tonight than with the most amazing KFF movie we've watched all year: Shogun Assassin ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]), based on the manga series Lone Wolf and Cub, stitched together from two of six live-action movies made in Japan, and wrapped up in one of the greatest synthesizer movie scores of the 1970's and 80's.

Such an awesome fucking movie. Tell all your friends about it, or else they can never be cool.

Alright, our annual Halloween season begins tonight.

I'll concede that our first movie of the season will not be the most optimal quality (as far as the quality of old VHS rips in concerned), but we're gonna make the most of it. The director of Uninvited ([awesome][awesome][awesome][awesome]), Greydon Clark, brings us Joe Don Baker and George Kennedy in a bizarre movie about a lawnmower killer in Wacko...
