Er.. you tell me, what would something like this do to our frame rate if it was sparingly used:
Earlier today I discovered Impulse Ramps
and [[http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=120935
rhesusmacabre's]] results on testing them, and my forum avatar accurately represents my grin at the realization: Dwarven Synchrotrons
! Or, as I prefer to call them, ☼Dwarven Carticle Accelerators☼note
Description:
The carts are started from four points surrounding the accelerator (A through D)which immediately hit the first two impulse ramps each to jump the tracks and enter the accelerator loop. The carts are prevented from any further jumping by being forced to circle the loop at ever-increasing speed until one of the two bridges are lowered. The small 1x1 bridge in the top right allows emergency shutdowns against the backstop wall (E).
Access to the chamber can come from the locked doors to the lower right maintenance tunnel (keep cart storage down this tunnel), in the exit tunnel (keep locked and unoccupied when firing), or from the control room. The lever near the corridor to the chamber controls the 5x1 bridge acting as a door into the chamber.
In the upper right and lower right corners of the control room are two levers that raise the blast shutters in front of their respective windows (purely aesthetic, I assure you).
The levers in the upper left and lower left control the doors into the exit tunnel, machinery access hatch, and maintenance tunnel, respectively.
The quartet of levers in the upper half of the control room lower the safeties on the individual cart insertion tracks (clockwise from top-left, A, B, C, D).
In the bottom half of the control room is the lever controlling the emergency stop bridge that leads to the backstop at (E).
In the center right of the control room is the lever that raises and lowers the bridge acting as the release for the accelerated carts into the exit tunnel. Two or three times around the accelerator loop should give each cart the equivalent speed of falling down 31 to 39 Z-level ramps.

So, in operation, I can see it going like this: Once the carts are loaded onto points A through D, the safeties for each are disengaged (changing the bridges from walls to 1x1 tracks) to allow the carts into the loop. Once each cart hits the two up-ramps in its loading spur, it should have enough speed to jump the track and enter the loop. Once the cart(s) are loaded, they should enter a perpetual loop that keeps the carts from jumping the tracks by having walls at the turns, or bridges in their "up" positions.
The carts can be stopped by lowering the 1x1 bridge to allow (supposed) safe shutdown by diverting the carts into the backstop at (E), or the 1x4 bridge can be lowered to allow the high-speed carts to shoot off into the targeting tunnel of your choice. Additionally, magma might be allowed to enter and exit the chamber or exit tunnel at a point that allows the carts to fill with it before leaving and colliding with targets.
Since this !Science! is being conducted in an underground test chamber beneath a desert
, I suggest the name for the dwarf responsible for inserting the carts be "Urist Freeman
".
There has got to be an easier way to present this, besides an in-game screenshot for something I don't have installed. What I pasted into the text entry, what I drew in Notepad, and the end result all differ from each other.

I support that naming scheme.
Journal of Journeyman the ??? Date "What a dream"
I just woke up from the most . . . something dream of my life. I don't know what to make of it. Armok was a mad scientist stitching together dead cats and dwarves into Centaurs. He gifted to them to other people like me, but the lazy gits wouldn't do any work!
I must know what it means.
(In short, I modded. Tried to use pets to get around slavery issues, and it failed. Oh well, my dreams of twenty to thirty person embarkations will have to wait until further advancements.)

Well, had my earlier idea for a massive booze explosion been feasible, I could have unveiled my idea for the Terrible Rate-Increase Nullifier Incorporating Tremendous Yield test to be performed in the Tower of Decadence.
I guess I'll have to be content with whatever Tuefel's got in mind; I've been waiting for a couple months to see it.
I think the following is an accurate in-character summary of upload problems:
Azreal's Journal Date: Unknown
Today I dreamed that I fell asleep and dreamed that I fell asleep and dreamed that I fell asleep and dreamed that I fell asleep and dreamed that I fell asleep and dreamed that I fell asleep and
The sentence continues half the page.
And then I dreamed I woke up and went to work only to wake up and go to work only to wake up and go to work only to wake up and go to work only to wake up and go to work only to wake up and go to work
This sentence continues for the rest of the page.
And now I'm not sure if I'm actually awake or not. Furthermore my booze keeps disappearing. Krutzing Rotpar.
Hermunster's Log, V-D Day:
After countless weeks of rioting, chaos, and acknowlegding work orders but idling in the Great Hall instead, the rebellion against Ringsea's insane, even by Beigeknife's standards!, rule has finally collapsed and the mad-dwarf has abdicated the Overseership. Political prisoners and children were freed across the Fort and all are celebrating mightily before the time comes to nominate a new overseer.
Even as I write this, I'm sitting in the Great Hall with my children and husband, feasting on plump helmets and drinking fine mead. After so much has happened it almost feels surreal but I'm so happy to have my whole family back together again! To see my angels laughing and playing with my husband at the table, as if nothing had ever happened to tear us all apart fills me with joy. And my husband; I've never been so proud of him. He was the one who took the keys and freed the children from the IHOP as Ringsea's so-called rule collapsed.
As I see all the Fort celebrating as one, I can honestly believe that the future holds good things for us here in Beigeknife.

Maybe this'll work. I turned it into a ZIP.
The most edgy person on the Internet.

I shal be a Legendary Swordsman before one of you monsters absolutely destroys Beigeknife in a torrent of burning magma and ARMOK-ORDAINED FUN. Aw hell we all know that's the point anyway. I just want to see how many hilarious ways I can go out before this place combusts. Last time I had a dorf on a succession game, I died no less than 8 times, each previous dorf becoming a Legend in his craft. Needless to say, it took for-krutzing-ever for the overseers on that game to send the fortress into a massive tantrum spiral.
