Used to be, but lost interest in his later books. I quit halfway through the Void trilogy when I noticed that there wasn't a single character in it I liked. Which, given the size of the cast, was actually quite impressive.
Plus, like many, many other sci-fi writers, he can get a bit weird about sex. There sure are a lot of fifteen-year-olds getting fucked by older, more experienced partners in his books.
What's precedent ever done for us?

Yes, that bestselling (in Britain, at least) science-fiction author who kind of surprisingly doesn't have that much attention on the wiki.
I credit him with getting me into hard SF with his standalone novel Fallen Dragon, which isn't flawless by any means but remains probably my favourite SF novel to this day - and I've finally gotten round to making the page. I recommend that book as a starting point for anyone who has heard of him but hasn't yet gotten into his work. Obviously, he's best known for The Nights Dawn Trilogy (although his Commonwealth Saga/Void Trilogy books seem to be supplanting that series in popularity, especially seeing as he keeps writing stories in that universe). There's a prosaic, industrial feel to his writing style that I find really adds to the believability of the worlds he creates - although I think that the far future setting of the Void Trilogy in particular has kind of lost that quality, and perhaps that's why I'm not quite as keen on it as his other works.
Anyone else a fan?

With cannon shot and gun blast smash the alien. With laser beam and searing plasma scatter the alien to the stars.
