Youtube isn't an example of that?
It has downvotes, they just don't do anything.
They never did.
They used to be visible on comments - now you can only see the upvotes.
Downvotes used to be visible and downvoted comments would get sent to the bottom of comment sections.
Ever since the google+ integration downvotes are pretty much nonexistant functionally. Every asshole, troll, and crazy can easily get seen these days.
I always see people complain about how bad systems that had downvotes were but I would take them over the all upvotes shit that emboldens the assholes.
I know on Reddit they try to clarify that the upvote/downvote system is to assess the quality and value of the post, NOT if the information contained in the post makes you happy or angry (the facebook method of various emojis is almost comically overcomplicated itself). I can't help but think that may be part of the reason any given video on youtube will have a 10% downvote.
Regarding verified checkmarks, a couple of journalists have said that they got their checkmark simply from their company giving Twitter a call, which calls into question all sorts of accountability issues when corporations hold that much power. A lot of verified "journalists" are the ones leading harassment campaigns or otherwise spreading misinformation. As applied to youtube, the same problems will arise. There will be a reliance on celebrity or corporate channels over the independent people whose lives really hinge on the platform.
The number used to be visible, but...it still never did anything.
It's not like those comments got deleted or anything.
If they get buried, it just happens.
> One of the reasons I participate in this forum is that there is no system of upvotes or downvotes for posts. I hate that shit because I know what it's doing to me on a lizard brain level.
Once upon a time I recall Eddie tried out a post upvote/downvote thing, his test comment was massively downvoted..
Not necessarily true: comments with 6 thumbs down would be "hidden" in a sense; you had to open them to find out what the comment was.
Of course their is the bad side to that. Some good comments would get downvoted out of existence because assholes banding together.
It's not a perfect system but I'd take it over the shit show we have now because atleast you have a chance to shut up the assholes or at very least show that not everyone approves of their opinions.
Quality control by weight of public opinion has never been a good system.
As a Frenchman, this made me die. What if English vowels were consistently pronounced one way?
Edited by Lyendith on Sep 20th 2019 at 8:00:58 PM
Strangely enough, the one most difficult to keep consistently different was "to"...fascinating.
That must've taken a while..
I did this as a joke with children's books when I was little. Read an English sentence by pronouncing them using Welsh phonetics.
This video of The Wicker Man (2006) as a comedy had me rolling XD
On the subject of The Wicker Man, I have to thank the original film for introducing me to the song "Sumer is Icumen in." Damn is it a catchy tune, especially when you have Christopher freaking Lee singing it.
…Well that must have confused your parents.
I mean, the music is the only thing you need to change in the film to make it a bona fide comedy, so this totally works.
Ahh, the boilerplate reply, my favourite.
Wonder if she has this on a macro now. Crtl+Alt+C and it posts the standard reply.
Also, "We heard loud & clear how much the badge means to you. Channels that currently have verification will now keep it without appeal. We’ll continue reviewing those channels to ensure we’re protecting creators from impersonation."
It sounds like they need a mid tier but fat chance of that, they only wanna support the .01% of users.
I find it hilarious that the official Youtube channel had its verification unchecked.
It reminded me of Tumblr's porn ban announcement getting flagged. And that's was just barely a year ago!
Has anyone seen Hood Cowboy Bebop? It's... kinda amazing?
Like, the acting, plot, and special effects are completely nonsensical and objectively bad (mind you, at least partially, if not entirely on purpose). But I enjoy these so much. It's like if The Last Dragon and Cowboy Bebop had a baby and that hits the sweet spot for me. Seriously, just thinking about this scene never fails to make me grin.
Though the Bebop crew's costuming it actually pretty great and, silly dialogue aside, I wouldn't mind the Spike actor playing Spike in a live-action Bebop adaptation. Kiiiiiiiiiiiinda emphasizes to me how ridiculous the "HOW DARE THEY MAKE SPIKE ASIAN" argument is.
Well, it was a game I played with my (10 years older) bro and my little bro.
My parents probably worked out what we were doing at a glance, since we were all first language Welsh.
I commented on how surreal it is to see how some of your favorite Youtubers are younger than you are and how it makes you feel a little old. I am not that young myself (I am in my thirties) and I am not saying that every Youtuber is young teen or adult, it just seems surreal to me to see how some Youtubers are much younger than me.
Yeah and it definitely makes you feel weird when you just graduated from whatever at age of 25 and there are 21 year old youtubers who quit studying to start youtube career
Ye youtubers dare to mock me ye monsters!
But yeah, seriously weird to see semi successful youtubers who are younger than you and especially if they went through similar career paths except just quit it to do youtube instead
