As an aspiring-to-be-professional writer working on a YA fantasy novel which "retells" an operetta (The Desert Song by Romberg- it doesn't retell it so much as deconstruct aspects of the original and subvert its tropes), I'm interested in novels which retell operas or operettas, especially if they're YA, but the only one I can find is Sunlight and Shadow by Cameron Dokey, which is a retelling of "The Magic Flute." Anyone know of any novels which retell operas or operettas that you would recommend?

I don't know very many, but if short stories are fine, there's Anthony Burgess' "The Knight of the Rose" (in his short story collection The Devil's Mode), a retelling of Richard Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier. While I've never seen the opera, Burgess' story is very well-written.

Marion Zimmer Bradley, Night's Daughter. She retells and expands on The Magic Flute. It's loosely tied into her whole Atlantis schtick, but can be read on its own.
