If it is full voice, it probably won't be as jarring as the narrator from the psp version of Oath in Felghana. That made me burst out laughing the first time he filled in for Adol.
Not Three Laws compliant.Only played I and II halfway. TGX version.
The music is boss. My favorite track is the PSP version's Palace of Destruction.
Haha, I absolutely love that track! I think that you should also check the Chronicles version (the PSP version) of Final battle, or Protectors, too. In general all the soundtracks are amazing, if the Awesome Music page of the series is anything to go by.
Also, other amazing tracks (my favorites, actually):
-Scars of the Divine Wing (Ys Origin)
-Be Careful, Sealed Time and The Strongest Foe (Ys III and Oi F)
-Mighty Obstacle (Ys VI)
-Vacant Interference (Ys Seven)
I've only played the Oath In Felghana. But I absolutely love it! I just happen to be playing through OIF again right now. XD.
Anyway. About the voice. Its been my personal headcanon that Adol is mute. So I'm against it.
"All worlds begin in darkness and all so end. The heart is no different."-AnsemOne thing that I find really funny about the series is the world map. I got the cloth map that came with Ys SEVEN and the world Ys takes place in is blatantly a copy of Earth. Examples? Altago from Seven is on the Afroca continent. The capital of the Romun Empire, Romn, is in what we know as Italy. Oh, and instead of a boot, Italy is shaped like a fist. I have the map hanging up in my apartment to see if anyone will catch the differences.
Oh, but Felghana is missing completely for some odd reason.

Not Three Laws compliant. The very first time I played a Ys game was when I got Oi F off Steam. I had heard great things about the music and throughout the introduction at the start I was thinking to myself "Okay, so far this is pretty typical fantasy fare." Then I got to the tutorial on combat and was blown away. Then back to standard fantasy fare as the story is set some more and now I can go into the fields and HELL YEAH THIS IS AWESOME.
Finally made it to the first boss and my thoughts were "Hell yeah, more awesome music! Wait, I'm dead already!?"
The combat is incredibly fun in VI, Oi F and Origin (thanks in no small part to sharing the same engine), so I would suggest to give those games a try, too. Seven loses the platforming part since you can't jump anymore, but is quite good nonetheless. Origin, though, is quite different if you play as Hugo or The Claw. Still, fun stuff. I'm still going through Origin, but I'm planning to re-start the game on Nightmare (I already beat the game on Hard with Yunica)
I have all four of the TG 16 Ys games, and they are a blast.
visit my blog!Have Seven on PSP and Oath in Felghana on PC. Both excellent games.
Ys Origin is on "flash sale" now on Steam, until 5 PM eastern daylight time today, for US$7.99.
Otherwise, it's been discounted to $11.99. Base price is $19.99.
Ys The Oath Of Felghana has been discounted to $5.09 (base price $14.99) for the duration of the summer/mid-year sale (which lasts another week or so I think).

Was Ys IV - The Dawn of Ys ever released in English in any form officially?
(Before answering, keep in mind this fact: There were actually two games called Ys IV. The Dawn of Ys for the PC-Engine is the fan-preferred one, while the Super Famicom Mask of the Sun is the one Falcom considers canon. I know the latter has had a remake, but what about the TG 16 version?)
visit my blog! Are these two games covering the same story or part of the timeline, but just differ widely, such as Castlevania Dracula XX Vampire's Kiss vs. Castlevania Dracula X Rondo of Blood?
Also, I have Recettear and am willing to trade it for Ys Origin.

I'm not sure, since I can't play Ys IV due to the whole "its only in Japanese" thing.
Everything I've read though says that its essentially comparable to the Rondo of Blood case though.
EDIT: Also, Ys made a damn awesome anime series.

visit my blog!Yeah, I think I saw the first ep of it (or its sequel) and it's been on my watchlist.
Ys IV was outsourced to two different companies, so there's two different games; Ys IV: Dawn of Ys and Ys IV: Mask of the Sun. You can safely ignore them now, as Falcom is making Ys IV: Celceta, Sea of Trees for the PS Vita, which X Seed is extremely likely to be translating.
Not Three Laws compliant. So basically they just said "screw it, let's make a new Ys IV?"
visit my blog!I wish Capcom would take that approach.
"All worlds begin in darkness and all so end. The heart is no different."-AnsemWhy? And with what?
Seems to me to be kinda lazy from a writing standpoint. Like "oh the original is too much to work with, let's re-do it!" and as The Snake Soup once said when a related issue came up with Metal Gear, doing things this way invariably just causes more problems than it solves.
visit my blog!In this case, it's because Falcom never actually made an Ys IV themselves. Dawn of Ys was made by Hudson and Mask of the Sun was made by Tonkin House. Both games have rather different plots. There was also a PS 2 remake made by Taito called Mask of the Sun: A New Theory which was different enough to count as it's own game. In this case, a remake by Falcom themselves is completely justified because Ys IV completely screws up the timeline otherwise.
If it comes out here, the only Ys game we'll be missing is Ys V: Kefin, Lost City of Sand, and apparently, that's not too much of a loss. It'll probably be remade at some point, since Falcom seems to be one of the most remake/port happy companies out there. If I remember right, there's something like 16 versions of Ys 1, 13 versions of Ys II and 8 versions of Ys III, 10 including Oath in Felghana, floating around out there. Granted, if they hadn't been doing that, they would have probably fallen apart after Ys III's colossal initial failure.

Not Three Laws compliant. With Devil May Cry. Making a new one instead of giving it to NT but this isn't the DMC thread so I'll just shut up now.
"All worlds begin in darkness and all so end. The heart is no different."-AnsemFYI Oath in Felghana is expected to be part of the Day 5 Indie Bundle on Steam which will start later today.
Wait, seriously!? Guess I'm gonna have to deposit some cash on my debit card (of course, if the game is still available, and if you info was right. I played the PSP version, for those that are wondering how I don't have the PC version, btw. Geez at seeing the thread one day later :s)
You have 48 minutes remaining to get the bundle.
After that, Oath will continue to be discounted at $5.09, but you won't get the other stuff for an additional $4.90.
So, do the modern games have gameplay similar to the dungeon segments of Recettear?
Because the only Ys game I've played before has been Ys 1 for NES and that has the unique "run into something offset by half block" way of fighting things.
Well, first of all, if this thread already existed, please lock this one and bump the original.
Now, Ys!
My guess is that not that many people have heard of this game, since we didn't have a thread for it. Well, that's fine. If you want to know more, head to the series page and read to your heart's content. Maybe even you'll like what you see in there, as the series is an awesome Action-RPG series and even some of the titles are in Steam.
So... for the fans around here: What are your thoughts about Adol getting a voice? (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DdFqHBFaRiU) As you can see here, Adol is now being voiced by Yuuki Kaji. Do you think that the voice is only for battle cries and the like, or will he finally speak properly for the first time in the (Main, Falcom-Developed) games
What do I think? I'm still not sure, I need to see the performance first. I'm not that partial towards the silent characters, but it will definitely be weird to see Adol speaking.
