Wick Cleaning Projects thread

This thread is intended to be a list of TRS and wiki repairs that have completed and still have wicks to be moved. If you have the time, please lend a hand to one of these efforts.

Before cleaning a trope, make sure to read the trope page(s) so that you know what the definition is so you can recognize misuse. Thanks.

Bottle Fairy (to Hard-Drinking Party Girl) has 566 wicks left as of 7/6. I've been slowly clearing them out, but any help would be much appreciated.

@Ccoa: I think you mean 7/6, not 7/16.

Two meta-questions:

• Is this just for renames & transplants, or also for other wick cleaning?
• Should we have a wiki page like Pages Needing Wick Cleanup for this?

It's for any wick cleaning from the TRS, preferably from older threads that need to be finished and closed. And... I guess? Not sure what the benefit would be.

One, a wiki page is also visible to editors who don't frequent the forums. Two, it prevents stuff from being lost in the thread without someone having to constantly update a post.

Also, for my own candidates: Ruined FOREVER and And The Fandom Rejoiced, which need their wicks deleted, unless they are In-Universe examples or in trope descriptions, where they should point to DarthWiki.Ruined FOREVER and SugarWiki.And The Fandom Rejoiced respectively.

What Do You Mean, It's Not Awesome? was renamed to Mundane Made Awesome

• There is moderate misuse, so please make sure the example makes sense, and remove/delink if not.
• 2035 wicks left as of 7/6.

Some more items:

• Drop What You Are Doing to Dramatic Drop, 144 wicks
• Greeneyed Redhead to Significant Greeneyed Redhead, 301 wicks
• I See London to Comedic Underwear Exposure, 131 wicks
• BLAM Episode and A Day at the Bizarro to Bizarro Episode, 346 and 96 wicks respectively.
• Dead Baby Comedy to Black Comedy, 933 wicks
• Examples from characters in Color-Coded for Your Convenience to Color-Coded Characters, 2096 wicks
• Not So Harmless to Not-So-Harmless Villain, 702 wicks
• The White Prince to Sheltered Aristocrat, keeping in mind the trope definition "a high-class person which is naive and inexperienced due to their sheltered life", 357 wicks
• Painting the Fourth Wall to Painting the Medium, 579 wicks. Keep in mind that its definition is "paratext used to tell things about the story" and that there are numerous subtropes on Painting the Medium.
• The Jimmy Hart Version to Suspiciously Similar Song, 379 wicks

I'm working on The White Prince. Currently at 340 wicks.

I've noticed a few have gone down by a dozen or so wicks. Thanks to whomever is doing them.

Note to volunteers: You do not have to clean hundreds or even dozens of wicks to help out. Even just doing a few helps.

Adult Child should probably have a note that some examples should be fixed to point to Manchild instead, if they don't involve an adult who hangs out with kids.

Too Good to Last, fitting examples (work was cancelled by network fiat) must be moved to Screwed by the Network or deleted, 1037 wicks

The White Prince is now down to 398 wicks.

I've noticed a few are gaining wicks every day.

Still grinding away on Hot Amazon.

I'd almost suggest you to ask Fast Eddie to turn the fake redlinker to a moderator tool, if nothing else can be done (offtopic)

What about these?

• Crowning Music Of Awesome -> SugarWiki.Awesome Music
• Crowning Moment Of Heartwarming -> SugarWiki.Heartwarming Moments
• Crowning Moment Of Funny -> SugarWiki.Funny Moments

I think it's preferred that examples are all placed in their own tabs (Awesome/, AwesomeMusic/, Heartwarming/, and Funny/) - but, at the very least, they should be listed on the YMMV/ tab (and never on the main work page).

You should have mentioned that examples should be sorted in the correct alphabetical order.

Also I think I could program my script to do some of these automatically. As far as I see it, these tropes can be done with blind search-and-replace:

• Closer to Earth was renamed to Women Are Wiser.
• Differentas Nightand Day was renamed to Polar Opposite Twins
• Bottle Fairy to Hard-Drinking Party Girl
• Drop What You Are Doing to Dramatic Drop
• I See London to Comedic Underwear Exposure
• BLAM Episode to Bizarro Episode
• Dead Baby Comedy to Black Comedy
• The Jimmy Hart Version to Suspiciously Similar Song
• Epic Song to Epic Rocking
• We Could Have Avoided All This to "Could Have Avoided This!" Plot

We Could Have Avoided All This was renamed because of misuse. It doesn't need search and replace, it needs chainsawing.

Many of these tropes had significant misuse concerns. You can't rename them the automatic fashion unless you are using it only as a navigational aid, while still checking every example yourself.

OP didn't write that these tropes have been abused, so I assumed there was no problem.

But if there is, search-and-replace is out, of course.

Most tropes do get renamed because of abuse.

There's also the issue of keeping the trope lists on work pages alphabetic, which would complicate any script—especially on character pages where there are usually multiple alphabetic lists.

This is all further complicated by the fact that some people still seem to have trouble with basic alphabetizing. Especially on Fan Fic pages, I've seen some appallingly bad attempts at creating alphabetic lists. ("What, you mean that you have to look at more than just the first letter? And aren't 'M' and 'N' basically the same letter?") And that's not even counting the extremely widespread error of not ignoring a leading "A" or "The" in a trope name.
