That's the reference, yes. It's a hymn that apparently was mondegreened by entire generations of children.

Note to self, Googling the phrase "Richard Stands" returns some weird stuff, even on safe search. (For the record, another common mondegreen in the American Pledge of Alliegence is mishearing "for which it stands" as "for Richard Stands")

I vote "Gladly - the cross eyed bear" with "or is that 'Gladly this cross I bare'?" as the caption. That explains the concept of a mondigreen.

A favorete mondigreen is The Ants Are My Friends. There even seems to be a book named after this!

[up] If that's not the whole thing, that's perfect...if it is, we could probably get by with the last two panels.

Or just the second/middle?

Becky: Who are you? The Mysterious Stranger: An angel. Huck: What's your name? The Mysterious Stranger: Satan.

[up] At a minimum; however, I like the third panel for the girl's reaction.

Do we not need tthe first frame for context? I guess, not being american, I don't know its The Alegence to the Flag unless I hear the first line. If anything we can drop the last frame - which is not a mondigreen.

I'd also prefer the first frame, for the reasons yogyog gives.

Just the first frame by itself would look like this:

I did some looking, and several B&W H&L strips appear to be 3-panelers, so I don't think we can use all three...with that, I'm good with [up].

Just the first panel alone is good. That gets my vote.

Ooh, then we could use the Histeria! quote as the caption. Wiki needs more Histeria! love smile

Well, we would need a caption that says what the actual line is, for those of us who don't know. Otherwise it's just fanmyopia.

Which is the Histeria! quotation anyway?

Except that's not the Star-Spangle Banner he's reciting. It's the Pledge of Allegiance. How about this:

"...one naked, undergarment, invisible man, with Liberace and puffed rice for all."
No, wait, that's not right either. "One nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." There, that's it.

I dislike relying on an external link to explain the joke, but otherwise it's fine.

We can add the example to the Comic Strips folder and possibly put the link there; that would work just as well for me.

I would like to point out that all of our non-American users will have no idea what the pledge of allegiance sounds like. For that reason I would prefer a mondegreen for a pop song.

[up] The problem is, which song is sufficiently well-known? I don't really know the pledge of allegiance either, but the text makes it clear that this is a Mondegreen even without knowing the original.

That's why I wanted the real line in the caption. Some lines people quote really are that silly.
