As a wacky one shot, I'd like to see Ryoga temporarily become the Grim Reaper.

And everyone gains immortality as Ryouga proves incapable of finding anyone before they're fully recovered from whatever should have killed them.

That and the few people he did find winding up in the wrong afterlives. The Buddhist Monk in Valhalla, etc.

Nah, I'd expect him upon receiving his powers to become obsessed with using them to finally kill his archenemy... but due to his directionlessness, he continuously fails to find said nemesis, instead winding up right where someone is about to die as they're supposed to, and unintentionally reaps their soul as he should, and thus keeps doing a better job of reaping the dead than the old Grim Reaper despite that not being his intention at all.

Does anyone know of any GOOD "Ranma gets a new OC fiancee tacked onto him" fics? I'm considering writing one myself, and I'd like to avoid the common pitfalls.

Hey, Marq. Turns out that the lawyer Ranma fic I linked some bit ago actually does explain for how he came to be the way he is. In chapter 6.

Why look for the good when you can learn so much more from the bad?

Because there are so many bad ones that I find myself wondering if it's even possible to write a good one. tongue

You know, like the fabled Negima/Naruto crossover that somehow doesn't suck.

As long as you're on the quest for El Dorado, here's a pretty cool story to tide you over. From the same guy as the last few fics I've mentioned here.

New idea:

A parody of Batman The Animated Series' "Almost Got 'im" with Ranma's standard "rogues gallery" bumming around in the Tendo Dojo, having formed a club over their shared hatred of Ranma (complete with membership cards, T-shirts, and stupid acronym name). One night, they naturally decide to swap stories over a poker game, stories about the times they almost "got" Ranma Saotome once and for all...

Current roster stands at Happosai, Kuno, Mousse, Gosunkugi, and Maomolin. Ryoga flat-out refused to join, and told the others to "get a life" (but not before swiping one of Gosunkugi's homemade Ranma-shaped voodoo dolls for himself). Potential members may include Principal Kuno (though I'm not sure how long Kuno can tolerate his presence) and the Gambling King. Or maybe even Hinako-sensei (if only to provide the club with a token female member).

The Twist in the original "Almost Got 'im" may or may not be replicated. I might replace it with another one entirely.

I'd read that, though it would make more sense for the meeting to take place somewhere other than the Tendo Dojo, like the Kuno estate (which Ranma will not approach at al unless he's really desparate). For extra fun, have a parallel meeting occur that involves Ranma's suitors/fiancees, with Kasumi and Nabiki being unofficial participants (more likely if it's at the Tendo Dojo). The swapped stories would be about how close each girl almost snared Ranma's heart for herself (or at least, as far as the girl believes; he may have just been trying to figure out how to get out of the predicament without inciting the girl's fury, after all).

Yeah, I kinda already figured that the Tendo Dojo might not be the ideal place for the Ranma Revenge Squad (official name pending) to swap their stories, but was stymied for an alternate location. Somehow, the Kuno Manor just doesn't feel right for where a seedy poker game takes place.

The parallel story night with the girls sounds like it has potential, though with a few minor bumps. Akane probably wouldn't join in if you paid her, and Kasumi would only do it if she seriously misunderstood what everyone's telling stories about (which actually isn't all that unlikely). Nabiki might participate just for the lulz.

The three main participants would obviously be Ukyo, Shampoo, and Kodachi, but it would be a narrow tightrope to walk in terms of characterization. Unlike the guys, they're explicit rivals, and their common goal divides instead of uniting them. It's something of a leap to imagine they'd share any stories about their failures in pursuing Ranma, and if they pile on enough BS to emphasize how close they came to snagging Ranma, the entire thing would probably turn into one huge fight scene by the third story or so.

I'll work on that added premise, though.

Basically what [up][up] said on the matter of location.

I can see Hinako-sensei popping in as well. Principal Kuno should probably come in part-way through once Tatewaki's done with his part, at which point he storms out to keep from dealing with his old man.

I don't remember who Maomolin is.

[up][up]A parallel meeting with the girls could be fun. I'd be very interested in Akane's reaction, though.

Oh, this one is easy. Make it so that the meeting is originally held because all of the official attendants share the common experience of being very angry/frustrated at Ranma for one reason or the other (be it perceived indecisiveness about committing to them, foot-in-mouth insensitivitynote ) and wanting to vent by complaining about and insulting him (and guys in general, because it's inevitable that it would slide to that direction tongue) in the company of those who would understand them, without interference from those of their male peers who themselves have a beef with Ranma for very different reasons (and may have in fact contributed to the girls' current state of frustration).

How the discussion turns to the topic of who got the closest to snaring Ranma... Well, there's probably a lot of potential ways for that to happen. Suffice to say, it can be rather easy to get Akane to talk: Just play upon her pride by deliberately cracking jokes about how it's impossible that she could've done anything remotely similar to that, because after all, Ranma is the one who always harps about how she's sexually unattractive and all that. She'd rise up to the challenge and tell her story just to shut them up... all with suspicious insistence that she was doing it all just to get a rise out of him, not because she actually was going to go through with it.

and Kasumi would only do it if she seriously misunderstood what everyone's telling stories about (which actually isn't all that unlikely).
If the meeting takes place in the Tendo Dojo, then Kasumi's inclusion is easy. She'd be playing the role of the hostess for obvious reasons, getting the girls home-made snacks and tea, and then someone would either ask her a question or two relevant to the discussion's current direction (because, hey, she's there, and she's a girl who lives around Ranma, too; why not?). She'd get embarrassed and worried if it's proper to talk about it, of course, but a little peer pressure and some silver-tongue talk from Nabiki would get her past that.

Nabiki might participate just for the lulz.
That, or the girls could've turned to her in order to ensure that nobody unwanted would crash their meeting. Yes, I'd imagine they'd be very frustrated with Ranma if they're willing to make such a deal with Nabiki.

And if all else fails: Have Nabiki spike everyone's drinks, or otherwise convince them that they deserve to drink a little after all the crap that Ranma gave them.

Heh, this reminds me of this one fic where Ranma, Akane, Ukyo, Konatsu, Shampoo, Mousse, Ryouga, and Akari are having something similar to a mixed-gender slumber party. Hilarity Ensues when Ukyo and Shampoo suggest a truth or dare game. (WARNING: It's a lemon story due to eventual sex scenes at the end.)

Hmmm... Let's risk it. Name, please?

Rather than smart, I'd prefer to be wise. It would let me be silly more often.

Sure, why not. Let's have the name.

[up] ...? Are you asking for the fic's potential name, or what...?

I'm certainly willing to give it a whirl (maybe we could turn it into a round robin where everyone contributes a story for a different character), but first I've got to come up with a name for the anti-Ranma club.

... hmmm... Crushing Ranma with Awesome Power? Committee for Ranma's Embarrassment, Extermination, and Pain? Needs a little more work.

Ah, gotcha.

BTW, does anyone here know how to write poker games? I might just change it to Duel Monsters or something I'm familiar with.

For the anti-Ranma clubs...

Male: Grand and Illustrious Sworn-Archenemies-of-Ranma-Saotome Alliance. (Yeah, that's Kuno's naming sense alright.)

Female: Furinkan Association of Women Whose Honor Has Been Slighted by Ranma Saotome.

Whatever the case, I'd suggest that the male club have an overtly military/militant feel to its name (which is why I picked "alliance", for example), to show their sworn enmity to Ranma no matter what; whereas the female club only bears enmity to him as an exception to their normal feelings towards him (Yes, Akane, that includes you; deny it all you want, but your sisters and even your rivals know that you're just bluffing).

Oddball little fic I've found while typing a random search into Google. I've heard rumors that for every Ranma-the-Saint fic, there's an equal and opposite Ranma-the-narcissistic-douchebag fic, but this is the first time I've ever laid my eyes on one. It's worth reading for the sheer novelty alone, IMO.

https://www.fanfiction.net/s/9145246/1/Escape-From-Ranma-Saotome

Anyone know of similar fics that go down this path?

I must read this. The writing quality for the first chapter's initial paragraphs are quite good, for one; it accurately captures much if not all of the three girls' personalities.

... Wait, if those three give up on him, then that leaves him with... Pfffftt! [lol] Oh, man, Ranma the poor sod!

EDIT: Scratch that, the first chapter as a whole is well-executed. [tup]

Chapter 2: Owwwiiiieeee. Way to put on the Played for Drama and deconstruction there.

Chapter 3: ... And this is a rather believable way of deconstructing Ranma's character without outright painting him as an all-vile villain.

Chapter 4: OMG, the author just cracked a joke at Capcom's Cash-Cow Franchise tendencies! [lol]

Finished chapter 2 of that.

Okay, yeah, sure, it sucks to be Akane. I still don't think poor Ryoga deserved that.

It gets better for him in subsequent chapters. Can't say as much for Ranma.

And also, I am greatly disheartened that this is a Dead Fic; the last chapter ends on a very suspenseful cliffhanger that promises a lot of hardships towards the girls, what with Ranma finally getting fed up with "playing nice" and deciding to become the full-on villain that nearly everyone is painting him as (unjustly, in his mind).
