Five-Man Band has been receiving a lot of misuse. As was concluded in this TRS thread, it needs a massive cleanup. There are over 30 subpages and almost 3500 wicks to be gone through. This thread is for organizing the cleanup effort and discussing any and all examples to be added and cut.
What is correct use of the trope?
- The characters must be part of a team, that is, a team dynamic must exist between members of the band.
- There must be exactly 5 team members
Format for examples
In an effort to cut down on misuse as well as get rid of all the Zero Context Examples, we are trying to shift all examples to the following format. If you are familiar with a current work and can do a writeup for it, please do so and post it here.
The sandbox for sorting examples is here.
Completed
Subpages:
- Other (Moved and redirected to a Just for Fun page, as that is what is was acting as.)
Still needs work
Wicks (Related To page):
- B-V
I will keep this post updated with the progress made, and any other needed information.

I like that idea but I don't know how many people would see it.
I found an example on Literature.Rainbow Six. I don't usually participate in this cleanup, but there is nothing about that work that indicates the intended use of the trope. It seems like blatant shoehorning.
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"The fact that the The Chick character is a "he" means that it's misuse. This trope is gender locked, so that entry has to go.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanRight off the bat, that one has no women so it should be an easy remove.
Reality is that, which when you stop believing in it, doesn't go away. -Philip K. DickFive-Man Band is shoehorned on the page for ’’Breaking Bad’’, with Gale being made into The Chick. Cut this?
- Five-Man Band:
- The Leader: Walt
- The Lancer: Jesse
- The Smart Guy: Saul
- The Big Guy: Mike
- The Chick: Gale

"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanI just saw the Inu Yasha entry for Five-Man Band. Has it been discussed here because it looks awfully shoe-horned to me.
The example specifies Kagome is the leader because everyone sits on their hands when she's in her own world. It makes Inuyasha the Lancer but acknowledges Inuyasha can be the leader who has a tendency to go against the group and be sat by Kagome.
That alone seems to acknowledge that trying to force Kagome and Inuyasha into specific Leader or Lancer roles is a problem from the outset - which it is. Inuyasha often makes decisions for the group that no-one has a problem with and when Kagome sits him for causing trouble it's usually because the entire group can't get through to him and the beads are the only solution left. That's more a case of Kagome being the last resort than truly being a leader (I'm ignoring the Kikyou jealousy because that's not about being the Leader either).
Miroku's also shoehorned as The Smart Guy. Yes, he probably is the smartest character in the group and he does come up with some strategies. However, he's not the only one who does, he's often in accord with Sango in terms of strategy and it's not uncommon to see Miroku, Sango and Kagome in agreement on what to do; it's often more about the group spotting what to do and Inuyasha being slow to catch on with Miroku verbalising what the group's been thinking. There are also occasions when someone other than Miroku comes up with the strategies. That's ignoring all the times when there's no point in strategising because Inuyasha does his lone Shounen hero fighting routine on a regular basis.
Sango is listed as the Big Guy but aside from being incredibly effective at physical fighting, she doesn't fit any other aspect of the Big Guy trope. She's certainly no more or less a one-man army than any other member of the group.
The Heart seems to be a mess, claiming Shippou is the example but acknowledging that it's zigzagged. Shippou is not the team mediator. He's the Tag Along Kid who is bratty and sometimes has a valid point. The closest to The Heart trope is actually Kagome, but I wouldn't list her as an example either as the group tends to be quite good at supporting each other in solving problems with the main problem usually being Inuyasha alone.
I'd say that even Kirara is shoehorned into the Team Pet role as her role in the story is to be Sango's battle mount and a convenient means of flight for when the group needs to fly somewhere or travel at speeds faster than humanly possible.
There isn't even a The Chick option listed.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Kill that entry.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanStreched, no chick; I agree with cutting it
Should I request that on the edit locked pages thread? I don't use the forums very often, so I'm still learning how they work.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Yes. Point to this thread in the deletion reason.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanWill do, thanks.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.I'd like to propose a Professional Wrestling entry that I'm 99% sure is valid.
- Da Soul Touchas
- The Leader: Acid Jazz, the team's centerpiece and all-arounder
- The Lancer: Marshe Rocket, the young high flyer and the stable member who takes things the most seriously
- The Smart Guy: C-Red, the team's coach and mentor
- The Big Guy: Willie "Da Bomb" Richardson, the 300 lb power wrestler
- The Chick: Diamond, the valet
EDIT: Formatting fix

Russell... likes to hurt people... for PEACE.
1. Is Diamond female? If not than the whole thing is incorrect.
2. 'Valet' sounds like 'lowest ranking member' which is incorrect.
3. centerpiece and all-rounder sounds like The Hero instead of The Leader.

1 and 2 - Yes, Diamond is female. In professional wrestling terminology 'valet' means 'non-wrestler female who accompanies wrestlers to the ring'.
3 - not really understanding what the objection here is.
Russell... likes to hurt people... for PEACE.The trope since last year uses The Leader and not The Hero as the first character.
"For a successful technology, reality must take precedence over public relations, for Nature cannot be fooled." - Richard FeynmanAlso, is Diamond the emotional center of the team? The Chick is more than just "lone female".
With regards to the Inuyasha example, someone else will have to request deletion of that example. I don't know how to namespace the page correctly, and it won't get done without a correctly namespaced request.

If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Huh. I guess I hit the correct namespace by accident then. Thanks for letting me know. I think I'll go and have a fight with my browser cache, it's clearly not playing ball.
If my post doesn't mention a giant flying sperm whale with oversized teeth and lionfish fins for flippers, it just isn't worth reading.Someone in the discussion page asked if 2 people could share The Smart Guy role of they are The Dividual i.e. Fitz and Simmons.
Yes, but not in the way you're thinking. The team is not an example of Five-Man Band (too many girls, for one thing), but the various individuals are examples of the component tropes. You can be The Leader or The Big Guy or whatever without technically being part of a Five-Man Band. That's part of the reason The Team was made.
Basically, examples that does not consist of exactly five characters (excluding the Sixth Ranger) is not an example and should be removed, yes?
Would it be advisable to add notes pointing to this thread on all discussion pages of the example pages?
