I guess Moriking took home the gold for the last batch of new manga. It's a shame Time Paradox ended up at 9, and also ironic considering the story. Let's hope for its sake that it pulls a Yozakura and does just well enough to not get axed.

Out of the new manga from the current new batch, Magu-chan has me hooked so far, but I see the buddy-cop series having its appeal.

Jesus, that thing was only 50 chapters long when I first read it.

Pfft, to me it was only... which chapter does Midoriya breaks his finger to throw a ball? [quick google search] 6 chapters... It was only a baby, they grow up so fast

I started it when it had 20 chapters, thinking it wouldn't get big. They grow up so fast.

Ah I remember first starting it around the 10-20 chapters in the middle of class in either high or late middle-school.

It was definitely in an art class.

They studied pretty cool stuff in your art class.

Even since Manga Plus started translating most (currently all) ongoing Weekly Shonen Jump series into English, Viz hasn't publish the collected volumes of all of them. That means the majority of chapters will eventually only be available in English through a subscription to their services.

Has any other publisher licensed the volumes for series Viz has passed on? Because that's kind of weird that a series can be completely, officially translated, but you'll never be able to be able to actual own it, just pay a subscription to keep access to an archive.

At least they're meeting a natural ending instead of being forced to end quickly to make space for new series like they did with Captain Tsubasa

I heard that Captain Tsubasa was treated like crap in its final years despite being a defining Sports Manga when it came out.

[up]x5 I actually haven't read Haikyuu in years, but I did have a lot of love for it.

Hinata was my favourite but I had a soft spot for Oikawa. It's sad but at least it ended on a high note

[up][up]I haven't read Captain Tsubasa (yet) but from what I heard, in the early 90's (the golden years of the magazine) Shueisha wanted to make new series since its two best sellers (Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk) were ending and wanted to get new readers (thanks to it we got series like One Piece). So they forced many series to end quickly, including Captain Tsubasa despite its huge success and being in the middle of the World Youth Cup. Because of this, the semifinals were skipped with two splash pages and the final against Brazil was only one volume and half.

Shame that the most important sport comicbook (not just manga, comicbook) of all times got this treatment. However, Takahashi got his revenge when asked to make a new series in occasion of the Fifa World Cup of 2002 (don't know exactly what he did, but Sommobuta, a huge Captain Tsubasa fan, said so but didn't reveal the details to tease his book about the series)

Seems like the Jump's golden age was also when they treated the authors the most shittily, sadly. =[

Wow suddenly canceling a bunch of series that were doing well is a major dick move.

I've heard it said that companies are paying more attention to endings because of digital media. People are less likely to want to buy access to your archive apps if they hear bad things about the series in them.

Yeah the part about ending a lot of series I get, but why Captain Tsubasa of all things? From what I understand it's one of the most iconic Shonen Jump series ever and exactly the sort of thing you'd want to keep in the age where Dragon Ball and Slam Dunk is ending. Can you imagine if modern Jump reacted to the ending of Demon Slayer, Promised Neverland and Haikyuu by also canceling My Hero Academia? It's extremely counterproductive. This magazine can have over 15 series at the same time, there should be tons of lesser series to give the axe to instead (especially since Slam Dunk and Dragon Ball already opened up two new spots). Was the Shonen Jump lineup back then really so cramped with bestsellers that even Captain Tsubasa was considered low-tier?

That sounds like office politics. Something like a disagreement between author and editor, or a new head editor being disinclined to support a series that began so far before their time.

Seems like the Jump's golden age was also when they treated the authors the most shittily, sadly. =[
As far treatment of employees, you could do much worse than cancelling the series whose author could already retire off a tenth of the residuals they're in store for.

Honestly, the whole thing sounds like a big ball of Internet hearsay.

That said, I'm pretty happy about how Haikyuu is ending. It's strange: the last game has had very little build-up and no stakes, it's basically a big mass of fanservice, but it still manages to work. The single chapters and scenes are so good that you get caught in the moment and forget what you're watching is, ultimately, just a random match in these people's career.

[up][up][up]What [up][up] said mostly summed it up: There was some tension between the author and the editors as well that didn't help

[up]How you describe it, it reminds me of Shohoku vs Sannoh, a team that is introduced only right before the match, and what a wonderful match it is

@Iniuria If they are keeping in mind the endings of series then it be good to figure out a way to make writting manga less strenous & prone to causing the authors to burn out.

Like look at Bleach, that series had to forcibly end because the authors health problems became too much to handle.
