Fine then, I shall strive to fill Lyendith's capacious footwear.

Issue 29

Front cover: Magu-chan: God of Destruction
Center color: Jujutsu Kaisen, We Never Learn
Random placement: Ayakashi Triangle (chapter 2), Bone Collection (chapter 8), Time Paradox Ghostwriter (chapter 6)
Ending: Guardian of the Witch
Absent: My Hero Academia

  1. Haikyu!!
  2. One Piece
  3. Dr. STONE
  4. UNDEAD UNLUCK
  5. Moriking
  6. Mashle: Magic and Muscles
  7. Mitama Security: Spirit Busters
  8. Chainsaw Man
  9. ACT-AGE
  10. Black Clover
  11. AGRAVITY BOYS
  12. Mission: Yozakura Family

I'm assuming Bone Collection got placed randomly because it's still got the "new" sticker on mangaplus and because I do not believe it was fourth from the top. Also, I never noticed how many of these series have all-caps titles.

Oh, also, I can’t find Ayakashi Triangle in the Jump app anymore. Have they removed it for some reason?
Don't know anything about the app, but going to the browser for mangaplus or viz should sort you.

Ayakashi feels like it should have had the contents of the second chapter in the first. I don't actively dislike it, but it doesn't really feel like it has actual momentum, with the second chapter also almost feeling like it was a first chapter but shorter.
Fold the stuff from this chapter into the last and then the debut doesn't have a big splashy twist ending.

Actually this should be Bone Collection's first ranking according to the way these things are usually measured.

Ayakashi looks to be aiming straight for the Yuri Fan demographic, even beyond the premise.
I'd read Reo x Leo already, so I expected Suzu to still be attracted to Matsuri, but we did get the first sign earlier than I expected.

I wouldn't expect broad popularity among yuri fandom. Large parts will write it off categorically because Matsuri still see himself as male and/or could change back eventually. There are also parts rejecting it out of blatant transphobia. "TS 百合 (Yuri)" actually trended in Japanese Twitter when the first chapter came out.

I can’t find Ayakashi Triangle in the Jump app anymore. Have they removed it for some reason?
Despite being on the banner the week it premiered, it was never on the app, just the Viz website (and mangaplus). There was some question as to why with the first chapter, but the second chapter pretty firmly shows it's because it's too horny.

The relationship the plot focuses on is aggressively wholesome (yes, even the part where Suzu implied she wanted to have sex with Matsuri), so it can be pretty jarring (moreso the panty shots than the actual nudity). But even if that last series Yabuki actually wrote wasn't remotely as horny as To LOVE-ru, that is what he got more famous for.

Girl on Girl Is Hot would probably be a more accurate hyperlink than Yuri Fan, yeah.

[up][up]That would be why I felt the need to include justifications for it and not the other new ones.

Unless anyone remembers whether Moriking got the "new" sticker last week?

Girl-on-Girl Is Hot would probably be a more accurate hyperlink than Yuri Fan, yeah.
I'll have more respect for it if we ever see them kissing, or some other explicitly-romantic form of physical intimacy. But Jump very much follows the rule of "characters can accidentally see each other naked a dozen before they hold hands intentionally", so we'd probably see very little of that even if Matsuri were still male.

Even if the premise is a means to make a F/F relationship "less gay", it's still probably the closest Jump has gotten to a major same-sex romance. (Yes, I remember some explicitly or implicitly queer Jump characters, but all of them are quite secondary. If there's one I'm not remembering, feel free to chime in.)

Isn't one of Chainsawman's villains a lesbian who's introduced while scissoring her girlfriend?

Its why Blue Flag is such a surprising precedence for a shonen romance manga in Shonen Jump+, which also had Chainsawmans previous work Firepunch where one of the major characters was trans.

Every accusation by the GOP is ALWAYS a confession.

Oh, and the Shonen Jump official website updated with the second volume of Blue Flag this last week. (Don't remember if the first volume was already available.)

If something's gonna get axed soon, it's probably Yozakura or Agravity.

Not long ago I would have argued that Yozakura's sales are too high for an early cancellation… but then Samurai 8 happened, so I'm not so sure anymore. Still, Mitama Security is doing much worse in that department, so it seems to survive solely by the good will of the editors at this point.

My guess is that "romance" series will intersect with other genres pushed rather than being the primary focus
Looking them up, it seems like Jump has three running series with a primary focus on romance: We Never Learn, Mission Yozakura Family, Ayakashi Triangle. Am I missing any? Are there usually more or less?

Isn't one of Chainsawman's villains a lesbian who's introduced while scissoring her girlfriend?
I don't think she's a main character. I also recall second-hand accounts of Bury Your Gays.

Its why Blue Flag is such a surprising precedence for a shonen romance manga in Shonen Jump+, which also had Chainsawmans previous work Firepunch where one of the major characters was trans.
How many series are on Jump+ at once? There's about twenty simultaneous in print Jump.

Not sure. Some like Blue Flag, Astra Lost in Soace, and Fire Punch have ended, and ones like Hell's Paradise are still ongoing.

[up][up]Quanxi's not main, no. Good character, but it looks like she was only around to be part of the Carnival of Killers.

But as long as we're talking Jump+, in Abyss Rage one of the hero's major allies is gay. (And the main villain is either gay or bi, but he's not exactly positive representation there.)

I would not call Quanxi a villain, per se , and she was in bed with her four girlfriends. Things did end kinda badly for her, but things end badly for the vast majority of characters in Chainsawman

Jump+ seems to be more experimental overall. For better or for worse *cough*worldsendharem*cough*

[up][up][up][up] Romance isn't really the main focus in Yozakura. I mean, it's part of the premise, but it's about action and family relations first and foremost. It's not like the two mains really need romantic buildup since they're literally married from the get-go. tongue

The poll was specifically about the 20 WSJ series with the highest circulation numbers, with all the others thrown in 'Other'. It wasn't a free poll where you could vote whatever you wanted, but only those 21 predetermined options instead. That's why 'Others' is so high.

#3974: Jun 22nd 2020 at 2:12:49 PM

There was also a gay (male) couple in Chainsaw Man author's previous work Fire Punch. They were minor characters, but up to where I read they were portrayed sympathetically and haven't been killed, which is a little shocking given how incredibly bleak the story is and how many people die in it. Interestingly Fujimoto used their appearance to make a point about how arbitrary "normality" is and how people who don't fit into it are cruelly cast aside or oppressed, since the couple had to run away from an oppressive and deeply immoral state because of their homosexuality.
