Update: The judge ruled in my favor! He cited legal precedents that said my Internet surfing did not rise to the level of misconduct and that I can still receive my unemployment benefits. I'd say my former employers have major egg on their faces. cool

Tomorrow there's a job fair, which I am hoping to attend.

This is of course dependant on me no longer vomiting and being able to hold down food, or I'll not be able to talk to the major companies in the fair like Boeing and Microsoft. And the chick that's been playing board games with us was hoping to go with me, since her current job is an "on call" kind of thing that generally gets her less than 10 hours per week.

Hope your job fair went well and you made some connections. (And picked up some free pens and totebags.)

Not sure if I'll post this.

But I'm pitching a pol sci-related article to various pol sci journals online.

Tried the ASPI's Strategist and they said no, the contents doesn't fit with the themes/articles that they have. So I'm trying The Diplomat.

Don't know if it'll work since I'm maybe one of the few writers in it that has a BA.

PS - The article I wrote up is basically about the JGSDF having a planned deployment to the MFO.

So I went to the job fair. Walked around, talked to about 20 different companies, gave out a half dozen resumes.

Then the lady in charge of the Boeing booth asked me to come back at the end of the fair for a job interview. Which I blew the competition out of the waternote , and she told me I should be looking for an official job offer in my e-mail next week. They were hiring in the area I was looking for too.

Excellent! One always hears that some companies are ready to do interviews at job fairs, but it's relatively rare that they actually do. That means a) you came off as an excellent candidate and b) there are immediate openings in your field. Actually landing the job now is a different matter, but you've aced the first few steps.

[up][up] This job fair was organized by the Fleet and Family Service Center, and I did see the questionaires they were giving the organizations present. It included asking them how many resumes they asked for, how many interviews they gave that day, and how many on-the-spot hires were done. Since the FFSC is all about supporting us veterans and spouses, I imagine they prune out the companies and agencies who aren't participating.

But in my case it worked out; I got the e-mail with the job offer! Going to look at it when I get home, since work internet sucks, and see what the exact details arenote . Then I can finalize all my stuff with the Navy and start house hunting in earnest.

Got rejected for a job at the Council of Foreign Relations as a Writer/Editor for their Asia articles and stuff.

I suffered a nasty rejection from a local lab as a JAVA/C++ programmer. Not much for me in this area. My sense of hope is dwindling.

Last application to Pinkerton is down the drain.

So's my application to the Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore. Same job twice in a row. Guess I’ll avoid it unless I have major creds/job experience that I can use. Better apply to a similar place somewhere else.

Things aren't looking too good for me.

I think I can count (estimate) how many places I got job rejections even after I graduated with a BA.

Applied in September for a position at the International Rescue Committee in New York.

Had a feeling that they too long to get back means that they’re chucking my application aside.

Now I dunno what went wrong if it’s the resume (I did apply the stuff relevant to my experience) or cover letter (ditto).

Looks like I got a FB post for volunteers for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

Would like to volunteer and improve more on my resume, but I’m worried about it especially if I’m able to get a job eventually.

[up]I assume the worry is about a possible interruption while you're at work, right?

If so, depending on the place you're applying to, I think there could be a mention of it, if the place in question deals with, say, news or analysis articles about Japan. It would give you an insight that companies that are interested in Japan would pay attention to. I don't know if you'd have to talk with a human resources department person within said places/companies, tho.

Depending on getting a job soon, I may have to ask the HR person if I’m accepted as a volunteer for a week (approx.).

A week? I think that can be arranged with the HR department. It's not a long period of time, so, it can easily be covered (again, depending on the place you're applying to).

It's still a long way, so I don't have to hurry just yet.

Although there's an infobox that says to show what other academic experience, job skills and such. Problem is that there's a limited word count.

Not sure if I should do it like this.

  • Academic experience
  • Job skill

PS - Looks like CSIS is offering an intern position for Spring next year for the Japan Chair program. Same requirements include the 3.0 GPA (which I did not accomplish due to personal/family reasons).

If I submit my application again, I'll possibly be rejected again. Which means that unless that requirement is removed, I'll always lose out of that position. And I already graduated with my BA stuff and I'm waiting for confirmation if I have a job with the British Embassy in Manila and it's a few more before 11/12, which is when the job position starts there.

Had a look at my Linkedin and I saw the profile of one of my old classmates (Nice guy. Haven't seen him since high school).

I was shocked to see that he's based in Singapore with RSIS. Although he has a master's and I don't.

I've been considering going around and offering to rake people's leaves for money, but now I'm having second thoughts. For starters, how do I know anyone will even take me up on the offer?

Scratching the consular officer job application off my list. Wasn't accepted.

[up][up]You could try asking more elderly people. They usually aren't up to raking regularly themselves and would likely prefer not spending a lot of money on a professional gardening service.

You could also try asking young parents who are too busy handling screaming infants to rake leaves. But don't ask parents with older kids, since they are probably making their kids do it instead as chores.

Basically, hit up anyone who seems like they don't have the ability or the time (or both) to rake leaves. Find a need and fill it.

Also, how are you getting the word out that you would be willing to do this?

[up]I hadn't considered that last part. I originally planned to go door-to-door before I realized the ineffectiveness is that plan.

Recently I've considered starting with family members; people that actually know me whom I would feel more comfortable offering.

Yeah, going door-to-door doesn't seem like the best idea. If a complete random stranger showed up at your doorstep asking to rake leaves for money, how would you react? It's also kind of inefficient especially if there aren't a lot of people with lawns in walking distance.

And no, you don't want to go to friends and family. It'd be extra awkward when (not if, when) they try to stiff you. Not unless you ask for money upfront.

Actually, you should always ask for money upfront.

Have your pricing structure set up front. Let it be known at church or your community center that you are willing and ready to do lawn work. And most importantly, follow through. Word of mouth will be your number one ally if you do a good job.

[up]Seconded. A note/ad pinned to a board in a community space is the way to go. And, not an online one.

These days, fewer people trawl physical noticeboards looking for scam data, but you are likely to catch the eye of somebody who needs leaves raked or gutters cleared.

Also, a cheap-as-chips mobile phone/ sim-card is a thought: consider it your job phone number. Don't mix it with your private stuff.
