This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.
As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.
Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.
- We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
- We also have threads for Indiana Jones
, Star Wars
, Predator
and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.
Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).
So apparently,
they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

That's true, Cap's stories in every era have been reflecting the politics of their time, whether Nixon, Reagan, or whoever. I guess I was just struck by the absence of that in the pre-Civil War Brubaker stuff. I guess Ultimate Cap being a tool of the Bush administration had that covered at the same time.
The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]
Brubaker was also starting right after the John Ney Rieber run, a deep dive into post-9/11 propaganda comics that is generally regarded as a mistake and is pretty much Canon Discontinuity. I imagine there was an appetite to be Not That.

Fwiw I think Brubaker has said his personal favorite "run" on Cap was Steranko's very brief tenure (three issues) in the 60s. They even referenced it on occasion
.
I can see it. The tone of those Steranko issues definitely feels like the tone Brubaker was knocking out of the park.
Brubaker generally wielded a lot of different parts of Cap history very well. He took a lot from Englehart's 50's Cap story, went hard on Kirby's traumatized veteran angle from the 60's stories, used the trick Gruenwald did where the Red Skull and his crew have interesting drama in their own part of the book. It's pretty different from the following writers, where Remender announced that he was doing 70's Kirby style and Spencer loaded his first arc with as many Gruenwald creations as possible. There's a good argument that Brubaker was to Cap as Busiek was to Avengers, with his sheer knowledge of the property constantly on display and providing the tools for stronger stories.
Reading digital on the amazon kindle reader now that they killed comixology causes me aggravation and I may cancel my subscriptions and just read comics when they hit Marvel Unlimited.
But, Avengers Forever #3.
Ant-Man Tony-Ant's ragtag group of heroes from the post-apocalyptic Venom Red Skull run world: A Vision that Tony half built because he took Anting from Hank and dammit he'll take Vision too. A Moon Knight named Mariama Spector. "The only kinda movies the Wasteland allows are ones where people get forcefully irradiated and have to fight each other to the death" movie star Simon Williams Wonder Man who just loves killing. Ummm Ben Grimm, the Infinity Thing, who went out into space and came back cosmic and weird. Aaron continues to love mashing up concepts.
Ant-Tony tries to rescue Robbie Rider from Venom Skull's dungeons but he refuses to go because he wants to do an avenging on Venom Skull. Then Venom Skull shows up.
Fight scene fight scene, action set-piece. Eventually Robbie bullshits that a symbiote is basically a vehicle. If you squint and really think about it laterally. It's like a gooey mech. Which means Robbie can take it over because he can vehicle anything. So he does.
What a feel good ending. A world liberated and a Venom Skull toppled. Except when Tony's team comes in after him to rescue him from his rescue mission, they find a portal nexus. And a bunch more Red Skulls come through. Since its all about multiverse nonsense, yeah, cut down one Red Skull and a basketball team's worth takes his place. And it seems that they're also mashups.

To be fair, Tony building a Vision isn't really stealing Hank's thunder in the same vein as him building Ultron.
Really, Tony's ripping off Ultron, Old Doc Horton, and Immortus. Hank is Vision's grandfather if anything.
It’s too late, Aaron already retroactive overheard you and did Ghost Rider Venom today
Also, there was a Venom Ghost Rider in venomverse I think

I thought the One Below All was Hulk's "Knull". And, according to Bruce, might actually be responsible for Knull as well.
Apparently Donny Cates had this idea for as long as Ewing had for the One Below All.
They both wanted the Hulk title at the time and had Cates gotten it then Titan would have been a thing first.
Now that he's writing Hulk now, Cates is implementing the plans he developed years ago.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."The current Moon Knight run is definitely leaning into the magical side of things for Moon Knight narratively, if not for Marc as a character.
There's the other Fist of Khonshu's magical gift of chorus, Marc's new magical HQ, his vampire sidekick as well as the new Stained Glass Scarlet.
I also like how Hunter's Moon works as a foil to Marc and a sort of pinch hitter for him, kind of like how Daniel Rand dressed up as Daredevil for a bit.
My Super Hero Is Black will tell the other history of the Marvel Universe
.

Now that I think about it, I think Captain America's comics are on a bit of a slump from tough act to follow.
Brubaker's run is regarded as the pinnacle of Cap for well over a decade now and since then there hasn't been a run that can closely stack up to it with the last 2 runs, Spencer's suffering from the infamous Hydra-Cap controversy among other issues and Coates just being rather middling and forgettable from what I hear.
