Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

The funny thing is I don't even think they mentioned his prior relation to Gaea in the previous issue where they talked about Thor's parentage. But his relation to Gaea returned here in a massive way and he is called the son of Gaea with nary a mention of the Phoenix.

Also Odin is dead again. He revealed that Thor doesn't have the full Odin-Force cause he has to die first so he sacrifices himself after apologizing for everything he did and Thor gains a shiny new golden form with a big sword.

Plus Mjolnir reveals it was responsible for Blake's corruption, letting in the World Snake onto his world.

Donny Cates' Hulk continues to be utterly ridiculous, but in the good way where there's not an air of seriousness about what's going on. I know this is leading to that Thor/Hulk crossover, so it'll be interesting to see how the Smashtronaut arc ends.

Also, in case you're not reading it, I urge everyone to check out Cates' comic book Crossover, which is both kind of poking fun at the idea of big events while also legitimately serving as a big event...just for Image comics no one ever really expected to crossover.

Okay so the new Iron Fist is out and the new IF is the Swordmaster guy. His sword shattered and the fragments are lodged in his hands, and he wound up gaining the IF chi after it saved him for some reason.

[up]its ok but I liked sword master's whole thing with being you know.. a sword master. or at least master of the one sword. his punches being super strong chi punches because the shards of the sword are embedded in his arm is kinda neat, but I was liking his journey and supporting cast before this.

He never even got to master that one sword. And everybody in universe kept making fun of him for it.

Yeah I never read Swordmaster before this but I agree majorly changing up a character like this, especially one so young is kind of a raw deal. Kinda screams that this whole thing as the new Iron Fist is an attempt at a publicity stunt to promote the character.

About the new Iron Fist, someone said "You've got good moves, kid, but your Iron Fist cosplay isn't screen-accurate. The color scheme's off, and the fit's too baggy".

I actually like the look now that I've gotten a good look at it.

Gosh I'm looking for the announced roster for the Midnight Suns game and it's just nonsense.

You've got great character picks like Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghostrider, Magik and Nico,

But then you've got weird popular picks like Iron Man, Captain America, Captain Marvel and Wolverine.

I know we've got three heroes yet to be announced, but why haven't we got the likes of Moonknight, Morbius, Elsa Bloodstone, Scarlet Witch, Man-thing, Loki, Brother Voodoo and Wearwolf by Night?

Okay maybe I'll give them Wolverine, because it does pay to have a poster boy, but putting so many avengers characters in it just depleats the premis.

It is strange, but Cap is a born leader who's pretty adaptable, Iron Man and Carol bring power (and with the right amount of knowledge and creativity, Tony might be able to combine his engineering skills with some magical runes....which I suspect plays a role in the armour some of them are wearing in the one trailer) and Logan...well, having someone who can heal from anything and claws that can cut nearly anything without any type of magical enhancement is just useful. His tracking skills would be valuable.

This is speaking from an in universe perspective of course. The meta reason is exactly what you're saying, but I'm sure they'll find a way to organically incorporate them into the story. I imagine Logan will be doing his lone wolf thing and join in, while Tony Steve and Carol will be at ground zero of the whole thing and say whelp! We're in!

Because that's how team ups usually go.

[up][up] If they had to put in popular characters, they should have gone with Spider-Man and the Hulk, given that both have now been retconned to have more mystical origins.

On the topic of Morbius, I thought he wasn't a supernatural vampire. Yeah, he's been associated with the more mystical Marvel properties like the Midnight Sons and the Legion of Monsters, but I consider him to be a purely weird-science Marvel creation.

I think its just that video games are expensive to produce and Midnight Sons is an obscure team without a lot of star power.

Anyway, Cap fought Dracula a lot in World War II apparently and became a werewolf once.

Ooo, they should definitely have him become a werewolf in this game.

There’s also the oddness of having you play as an original character in the game, the Hunter.

I don't hate the idea of the Hunter, the player character, because it seems you don't have to take them on any missions and the main appeal is giving you an avatar for making conversation with your team between missions.

Which I'm all for. I like the idea of being able to talk to Nico about her tailoring hobby or or Ghost Rider about car maintence.

So I'll give the Hunter a pass.

If they don't then they are fools and charlatans.

Ideally, there'll be monsterified alts for many characters, a la that Spider Isle Secret Wars Battleworld land.

Hulk would make a more appropriate guest character than Iorn-man or Captain Marvel, G Ben how often he's had horror titles and plaid as a monster.

Thor too given that although he doesn't use magic, he deals with it regularly.

I can only imagine that the in universe set up is that the plot is so world threatening that the Avengers have stationed Iron Man, Cap, Captain Marvel and Wovlerine with the Midnight Suns to aid them.

Iron Man is really the most odd man out.

Wolverine inserts himself into so many genres that of course horror and demons and whatnot is one of them. Heck, the X-Men deal with a lot more demons than the superhero average.

As mentioned, Cap(tain America) has his brushes into monster stuff too because while you can punch Nazis each and erry day, sometimes you want to do something different. Also, there's overlap between like horror and fictional Nazi mad science.

Captain Marvel doesn't deal with horror stuff as much but she keeps getting magic archnemeses because magic is her Achilles heel. That and being written bad in events.

But magic tends to be not just out of Iron Man's wheelhouse but so out of his wheelhouse that it gets lampshaded whenever it happens to him. Which is semi-frequent so that it can be lampshaded. He once told Dr Strange to his face that he hates the nonsense he represents. So, of course, for irony reasons, he's a possible future Sorcerer Supreme. And he still wears armor for that job.

Tony being out of his wheelhouse makes for some good drama I'd argue.

He's trying to science his way through magic and all that.
