Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original text of OP
A thread for all the miscellaneous Marvel discussion that doesn't have its own thread.

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

I remember they tried introducing a new version of that group in Robbie’s second Ghost Rider series with Amadeus-Hulk, X-23 Wolverine, and Silk.

All they accomplished was getting the title canceled in 4 issues because everyone just wanted to read about Robbie but they wound up making him into a background character in his own book.

It is a fan favorite, it's not that weird they would revisit it.

[up]

It was five and that wasn't why it was canceled. His previous run was canceled too. Besides that wasn't a team, that was a one arc team up.

Speaking of Laura, she's been in another Pseudo New F4, the one with her, Ross, Alejandra and Agent Venom.

Funny thing is that's Savage Hulk, so I'm not sure it counts as New F4 reunion.

And is that Danny or Johnny in that image?

It's weird to me that a three-issue joke - that was extremely clearly a joke - even merits the title of Audience-Alienating Era or to be considered discontinuity.

I'm in the middle of reading Simonson's FF right now, actually, and it's mostly a good string of stories with cool concepts that don't land super well. (Simonson made some very odd choices in visual storytelling that hamstring it all, too.) Sharon Ventura's the only part that feels especially weird, and even then, I feel like she had a lot more potential than anyone writing her ever brought out, even if that potential was solely as a way of developing Ben.

[up]x2: Johnny, according to the Marvel Wiki. It's from a limited tie-in series called Marvel MegaMorphs (no relation to Animorphs) for a series of action figures by ToyBiz.

What I find funniest about the New Fantastic Four is that, before his stint with the Avengers, Peter was the biggest loner of that team (Logan is an X-man for life, even though he's also been an Avenger, Hulk founded the Avengers, even if he left, and Ghost Rider was part of the Champions).

And yet, Peter's the friendliest of them, to the point where you'd be surprised to learn he's the one who's not really a team player.

Edit: Also, I feel like it's genuinely nice to see the Avengers not being the enemy for once.

Like, I feel like everyone else has beef with them for something they've done in the past. They're almost always representing the man or the Authority and are designated antagonists.

Granted, Peter's also the one with the biggest ties to the original F4.

Hulk founded the Avengers, even if he left

And a founding Defender.

Ghost Rider would also become a founding member of the Midnight Sons/Suns shortly thereafter.

I don't believe he has.

He's worked with a lot of teams, and been a member of a few, but beyond the New FF, he's never founded a team himself.

The closest you'd come is the whole Spiderman extended family.

If the marvel universe aged and progressed and it wasn’t like life story it might be interesting for an experienced spider man to form a young team as a mentor

Huh.

The slingers are weird. Peter kinda created them (via creating their identities) but he's not really their leader obviously, and they obviously don't consider him one of them. I'm quite sure they don't even know he was the original bearer of their identities.

[up][up][up] And like, you could easily make it a Spider-themed team with how many young spiders are around.

I'd really love to see a Spider-man story where he ages but with a lot more room to breath than Life Story where it's a decade per issue. Like, 616 Spider-man but with a proper timeline/passage of time would be ideal.

Anyway I've always been kind of interested in the New Fantastic Four both because it's a goofy team up and also because I like Peter in the FF. I already mentioned how I read the Ages of Ultron and What-If variants which showed more of this team, a Peter David written series sounds very interesting.

It makes me wonder, though - will Peter be married in this? It's from the time period where he was married in the comics, but in current continuity he was never actually married for that period. Maybe they just won't confirm his relationship either way.

Ironically the Batfam has more variety since they tend to use have some distinct equipment and skillsets.

Nightwing has the sticks, Tim uses a bo staff, Damian has a sword, Cassandra is hand to hand focused, etc.

They've kind of done some variety with spider powers already.

Miles gets invisibility and shocky powers, Silk has organic webs and is faster than Peter, Peter seems to be the strongest (I think he has a better spider-sense than Peter, as well).

It'd be cool to seem them differentiate the others.

Like, what's Anya's special ability? Maybe she's much more durable as a throw-back to when she had an exoskeleton. Or, she's apparently a skilled hand-to-hand fighter (I read this on a wiki idk details), maybe she could be like Assassin Spider-man and train her Spider-sense to really honed levels.

Yeah. There's not much variety among the spiders.

Jessica was kinda her own thing despite having the Spider Woman moniker, and she still glides rather than web swing, but now she shares the Venon Blast with Miles.

Ben had the Impact Webbing, but I have no clue if that's still a thing he does anymore.

I think Kane ended up taking up the stingers from The Other.

As I understand it, Cindy has organic webs from the fingers doesn't she?

Spider Gwen is rocking her version of the Venon Symbiote lately, so she's technically just mimicking spider powers.

Not sure what Arana is doing to be honest.

....are we sure they all do the same thing? I'm not totally sure on everything here, but it sounds like there's far more variation than we think.

That's what I'm trying to say - there already is some variety among the spiders, so I think you could differentiate them if you tried.

You ninja'ed me. I was responding to Bocaj.

But yeah. There's a lot more to the Spiders than everybody being the same. They may all do whatever a Spider can, but not in the same way.

Edit: Of course, since I was kinda agreeing with him up until I started thinking about it, but that's beside the point.

Fair enough. For me, that seems like the ideal because they at least have a clear reason to be forming a team (particular for Peter mentoring him).

Due to Peter's usual lone-wolf nature I have a harder time picturing him mentoring a totally different team to himself.
