Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original text of OP
A thread for all the miscellaneous Marvel discussion that doesn't have its own thread.

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

So she can't actually do that shit?

That's copyright infringement then!

When Kate took up the name Hawkeye, she learned to use a bow as well as Clint.

Miles is Spider-Man because he can also do whatever a spider (man) can.

If you call yourself Bullseye, then dammit! You'd best learn to fling a peanut with enough force to perforate a dudes head, otherwise why bother! Inspiration is one thing, but at least homage your inspiration via more than the name!

Fat Cobra comes from a magical made up place but its a magical made up place from Chinese mythology.

So he's probably Chinese in the comics.

Lady Bullseye was just inspired by Bulleye but it's pretty common for her to be portrayed pulling off similarly insane feats of marksmanship. It's just she usually wields regular weaponry (well, shurikens and katanas) while Bullseye is obsessed with just doing that shit with like paper clips and tarot cards or some shit.

[up] So, in other words: In Bullseye's hands, anything is a deadly weapon. In Lady Bullseye's hands, any weapon is a deadly weapon.

Yeah, Lady Bullseye is pretty deadly in her own right but she's never done stuff like fling her own broken off teeth as projectile weapons. And Bullseye threw his teeth hard enough to embed themselves in Daredevil's billy club.

Just had a thought of a Hulk story where, like with Sakaar, Hulk crash-lands on the planet but is "the weakest person there" because everybody on that planet is a giant, multi-colored rage monster.

Like, a society of Hulks, and our Hulk is just the loud child throwing a tantrum until the police settle him down.

I can't tell if this is brilliant, dumb, done-before, or just too crazy to happen.

I'd like it, provided we'd get to see the Hulk best that society with a trait of his other than strength. For instance Hulk's straight forwardness, make this society of bright blue Adonis proportioned giants unable to comprehend someone wouldn't be manipulative and coniving, and then let the little green giant run circles around them because Hulk doesn't care about their machinations and offers.

Even if the Hulk is the weakest one there is, the Hulk can not be bullied.

That is more or less what Planet Hulk was like since the Green Scar wasn't at full strength at first.

[up][up][up][up] There are two secrets to writing a good Hulk story:

1. Every good Hulk idea has been done before, but if it hasn't been remembered yet as an iconic Hulk story, nobody will notice that it's been done before. Planet Hulk took elements that had already been done, like the Hulk getting shot into space (...with Black Bolt being one of the people involved, at that) and adventuring on an alien planet, and condensed and reinvented and rearranged those elements into a classic. The Hulk was given Banner's intelligence multiple times, as early as the original failed six-issue run, before Peter David finally made it stick as an idea. Basically, if anybody has to try to remember that something happened to the Hulk, it's free game to do it again.

2. The only way to write a good Hulk story is to shoot for the moon. The Hulk is inherently hard to write, even moreso by anyone trying to keep him in any kind of status quo. Good Hulk stories tend to come from stories that feel out-there and strange, like Planet Hulk, like Future Imperfect, like Joe Fixit, like Immortal Hulk. Historically, any Hulk run that isn't built on a big idea like those will inevitably devolve into excessive reliance on Chandler's Law to keep the story going (seriously, old school Hulk comics are low key amazing for how much they rely on random event progression).

Therefore, I'd call this idea the right kind of idea for a good Hulk story, even if it's been done before in some way. "Too crazy" is basically the minimum.

ok so in thor, the explanation for why mjolnir is evil now is people keep throwing shit into the sun, and went mjolnir was forged there the mother storm fused with mangog. also a tease that knull will come back in some form and bring untold calamity. because again people just keep dumping shit in the sun

Indeed the best part about the issue is Thor going “Wow we have been dumping way too much of our Ultimate Evil bad guys into the sun. It’s prolly corrupted at this point.” [lol]

Amusingly Mjolnir was thrown into the sun and brought back long before King in Black so Knull shouldn’t corrupting it. Though Mangog is already doing the word in here.

Do you know the name of the story that did that before Planet Hulk?

Way back in the 60s (Incredible Hulk 102-103), Loki uses the Hulk as a weapon against Asgard, and in the end Odin banishes the Hulk into deep space where he ends up fighting the Space Parasite.

Then, about a year later, the Hulk gets taken to another planet and kills its tyrannical ruler, a galaxy-spanning creature called the Galaxy Master.

It's all very Buck Rogers.

He's currently lost in another dimension in the current Hulk run.

This time a world where Bruce successfully invented the gamma bomb leading America to conquer the world by launching gamma nukes all over filling the planet with gamma mutants.

And Ross is US President leading the whole thing.
