Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

A thread for all the miscellaneous Marvel discussion that doesn't have its own thread.

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

The "function over form" might have fit Valeria when she was a Creepy Child, but she's grown up already.

To be fair that could mean several couples in the Marvel Universe, not just Peter and MJ.

Though in this instance it's Iron Man and Hellcat.

In a way, it's kind of impressive they didn't put Tony and Pepper back together while they were still a couple in the MCU.

To note Christopher Cantwell current writer of Iron Man there is a huge fan of Hellcat, even having a figurine of her.

Didn't Patsy tell Tony he was just a rich punk who didn't understand people and that he wasn't doing enough to help them because he was a rich punk not too long ago?

Probably yeah.

Writer's a big fan of a character and so they decide to include them in their run of a high-profile character.

[up] Yes thats from the same run of this. Keep in mind a little while after saying that she does sleep with him.

Yeah. We talked about it before.

Like, are the comics writing Tony as not really doing enough for people with his genius, or is it assumed that he's just not doing anything because he's (legitimately) a rich asshole?

In various things in various ways Tony does a lot

There’s always more to do and he can’t actually do enough to eradicate a real world issue because world outside your window

In this particular run he gave up most of his money and divested control of his company to try to “get back to basics” but kept getting annoyed by what internet randos were saying about him

Ya know with the upcoming Eternals war event, pretty obviously synergy with the movie (not that thats a bad thing necessarily), its just kinda funny to think had the movie been more successful they prolly would aggressively market the Eternals even more.

Like when Guardians came out it was a huge hit so Marvel went all in on them. We got a Guardians team-up comic (which is the entire Guardians group teaming up with a random hero) as well as individual ongoings for every movie Guardian so multiple Star-Lord comics, a Gamora comic, a Drax comic (written by CM Punk), a bunch of Rocket comics, a Groot comic, and a Rocket + Groot comic.

It was crazy.

[up] As it is, Eternals only got a phenomenal ongoing by Gillen and Ribic, with brilliant twists and top-notch character work. The Guardians got ridiculous amounts of overexposure in a ton of series that have mostly been forgotten, the Eternals just get a single series that stands a good chance of being one of those franchise-defining runs that will be remembered for decades by the people who read it.

The Eternals were never going to be the next Guardians of the Galaxy; they're just way too different. The Guardians, at their core, are just another superhero team. They're simple characters, with simple motivations. Oh, that's not to say they're shallow, far from it, but at the end of the day, they're good guys fighting bad guys. Easy to understand.

The Eternals are not easy to understand. That is, in fact, pretty central to their whole concept. They're not good guys fighting bad guys. They're gods fighting demons, at the behest of greater gods. And since they're an entire race, that also adds in politics. Different factions with different motivations and philosophies and goals. The kind of thing that seldom makes for the most exciting superhero comics.

And don't forget, it's actually pretty early days for the current Eternals run. As I recall, it took a few years for the Guardians to get spin-offs for everyone. It's still possible we'll get spin-offs for the Eternals, whether that be solos, or one-shots and minis set through the history of the Eternals, or whatever. Sersi's long history interacting with humanity would make her a good choice for a solo. Thena's history with the Deviants makes her a good choice. An Ikaris series, with Sprite along to annoy him, would be fun. Kingo balancing an acting career with battles against monsters. There's definitely potential for Eternals solo titles, if Marvel decides to go that route a couple years from now.

But for now . . . fuckin' Gillen and Ribic.

There have been a couple one shots and such

The one about Ajax going to visit Dead Alien Mountain, the one about Thanos' new backstory. An Infinity comic thats more based on the movie aesthetics.

Granted those one-shots are apart of the main series. Gillen is doing a thing where after every major arc he takes a break through doing non-numbered issues that provides a lot of lore and backstory.

The Celestia issue for one is very interesting cause it formally re-introduces Ajak and Makkari, both of whom who haven’t appeared in the main series yet and establishes that Ajak has gone insane from her crisis of faith and will begin targeting the Avengers.

Which presumably will lead into the upcoming war event.

Ajak is gonna need to get herself a big army since she’s not exactly a combat oriented Eternal.

She would get her ass kicked hard.

[up][up][up][up] Overexposure thank you, I was missing the right term to describe the massive Guardians push that came out after the movie became a huge hit.

Just finished the Hit Monkey animated series.

Got me curious about a number of things:

  • Is Lady Bullseye also capable of the same Improbable Aiming Skills that classic Bullseye is known for? I always kinda took it for granted that she is (because if you take the name of someone else, you damned well better be able to pull off the same shit) but I don't know for sure.

  • Similarly, since I've never seen Fat Cobra, but know he's an Iron Fist adjacent character since he's also an Immortal weapon, so I kinda always thought he was Chinese, rather than Japanese.

One Strip! One Strip!
