Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original text of OP
A thread for all the miscellaneous Marvel discussion that doesn't have its own thread.

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

Pardon my ignorance, but how is Thor able to get drunk given his physiology?

And he drinks a lot of it.

We see this in the MCU as well. Note that in Endgame Thor got wasted on regular beer from Earth. Probably because he drinks barrels of the stuff.

Hey at least the heroes can avoid the Authority Figure = Evilest Scum of the Earth stick that other people get hit with! Like poor Odin.

Oooof poor Odin. I think he qualifies as Unintentionally Sympathetic because despite narrative attempts to cast him as a bad guy I can't help but feel really bad for him.

Like sure he did some bad shit but the amount of grief he gets is incessant. He doesn't even do anything bad but no one can go one page without calling him a piece of shit motherfucker even if he's actually trying to help.

I mean Jesus this bit on his character page. It all feels so spiteful.

How the Mighty Have Fallen: Under recent writers Odin has become a shadow of his former self. Once the all-powerful king of Asgard bathing in majesty and glory, beloved by his people and, and respected across the universe, now he is typically depicted as an angry old man who can't do anything correct, looked down upon by everyone including his own son, noted to be only a footnote of no importance in cosmic history, and can most likely be found in a bar stinking of alcohol. A far cry for one who was once one of the mightiest gods in the universe, creator of the Earth and humanity, and whose wisdom and tactical abilities allowed him to be constantly one step ahead of everyone else.

It's worth noting that he's still pretty formidable when he's not at the bottom of a barrel of booze, and still provides pretty good advice, when Thor is (very grudgingly) willing to admit that he needs it. But yeah, he's still an ancient and embittered alcoholic, quite aware that the cosmos has moved on.

Reading Spider-Man... they're just DETERMINED that Ben Reily shouldn't be happy, huh.

Also, HOLY SHIT Beyond is bad. Wow.

Hopefully they don't kill the poor bastard off before the re-launch.

[up] I would love it if it was, it gives them a reason to get into a spiritual adaptation of the 90s cartoons last arc and thus more Spiderverse shenaniganstongue

Avengers 52, a years worth of Avengers vol Aaron.

Mostly the Multiversal Masters of Evil stuff continues.

Venom Skull and Green Goblin Except He’s Ghost Rider attack Cap and Carol and Starbrand Child Brandy when they’re visiting Brandy’s dead mom’s house so Brandy can get a human connection and stop being such a murder child.

The MMOE are too much for Cap and Carol but Brandy easily mops the floor with them because they blew up her mom’s house. The MMOE run because there wasn’t supposed to be a Starbrand, Ghost Goblin leaving enough bombs to blow the continent of America off the map but Brandy burns the bombs before they can go off. It’s cosmic, she doesn’t have to explain it.

Weirdly this causes her to jump in age again to a teen or maybe adult? Artists aren’t great always at distinguishing them. And I’m not happy with this because murder baby and child Brandy is hilarious. Murder teen or adult Brandy is a dime a dozen. Throw a rock at an x group and you’ll hit a murder teen or murder adult. And b) comics have a baaad track record with minor characters suddenly aged up. And Brandy isn’t even aware she’s gotten older so she’s not any older mentally. Potential to be gross and this run hasn’t not tripped into that sometimes.

Also, some random Deathloks discuss why the 616 is so important if all the heroes are tarnished or underused. Feels meta.

Aaron’s run really has overused the character fusion gimmick.

Also hey Sam is back as Cap.

I can't wait for the cycle of "they should just give Sam a Falcon series if they really want to promote diversity" takes while they choose to ignore that's exactly what Marvel did after Secret Empire...and those dudes wouldn't buy that book either.

The new She-Hulk volume is off to a good start so far. I can't keep Titania's legal status straight (I think post Gamma Flight she's a wanted criminal again, but I'm not sure), though I really enjoyed how Jennifer dealt with her this time.
