This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.
As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.
Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.
- We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
- We also have threads for Indiana Jones
, Star Wars
, Predator
and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.
Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).
So apparently,
they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

Nah, that's DC. Marvel did their own version... I want to say after Siege. Here it is
◊.
Wow.
What was in the rings?
Because I could be down for a lotr-spoofy event
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThat looks like early ideas they had and were planning to expand upon in some way that all seems to end with a war with Kang(?)that I probably never read. This is what they talk about when they say early plans. We can see the first ideas for Fear Itself and other events or storylines.
Probably was something with the Mandarin's rings. Remember that Gillen and the other Iron Man writers were supposed to build up to something which got trashed when Gillen got the job offer to work on Darth Vader.

Nine rings for mortal heroes doomed to die.
And one ring to rule them all and in darkness bind them.
Guess we could have some elves and dwarves in there too.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersMust've been a trashed plotline.
Edit: Apparently a Deadpool comic today did
◊ something similar with a robot.

So...opinions on today's comics? I'd post mine, but I'm a little busy at the moment.
Oh God! Natural light!Today!
Captain Marvel #2 was really good. I'm bothered by Aurora not using her glowing powers on the dark ship, especially since the issue later shows she does still have them. And there was no reference to her fear of darkness. But other than that, it's great stuff. Alpha Flight got to be great. Wendy is adorable. I like the art and the writing. It's a great comic.
A-Force is great. It's got a ton of hilarious moments. And some really touching moments. But the hilarious moments are what stand out. Also, DAZZLER IS NOW IN ROLLER-DERBY THAT IS AMAZING THAT IS SO PERFECT I LOVE IT! That is seriously my favourite thing about the issue. One of my favourite things of the week. Roller-derby Dazzler! Ali-STUN Blaire! That's her derby name. Ali-STUN Blaire. Yes. I am so happy about the whole thing, I can't even tell you. It's so great.
Vision is still amazing. This issue has the weirdest take on the Charlie Brown football gag that I've ever seen, and I love it. It's actually a surprisingly sweet issue, overall, which obviously means the ending has to be horrible. It's a shame that Vision's family are all going to die, because they're all really cool. If you're not reading this book, then go read it. It's brilliant stuff. You have to be reading it, you really do.
UXM is OK, I guess. Land is less awful than usual, but still sucks. The issue's really flat, overall, and a lot of that is down to the fight scene. It's really boring. It's Magneto and the Dark Riders just looking at each other. It needed to be more dynamic, with some actual action going on. Also, Shen Xorn is in this issue. That's weird. Do we really want to be reminded of that whole clusterfuck? Bunn actually does write him fairly well. But still.
Merc For Money would be a good comic with a different cast. But this cast makes no frigging sense, and most of them are out-of-character. Especially Terror. Bunn is following Duggan's take. But that's not Terror. It is nothing like Terror. Where's his culture? His philosophical nature? His penchant for wordplay? This Terror sounds nothing like the actual Terror. Duggan and Bunn both clearly didn't do any research on the character. I love Terror, so to see him written so horribly just pisses me off. On the plus side, the Crazy Gang show up. I will never complain about anything from the classic Captain Britain and Excalibur comics showing up.
Scarlet Witch is an interesting enough story. I'm not a fan of Dillon's art. Some panels look better than others. But man, those final pages by Chris Visions? That's some gorgeous work there. I was going to say this issue would be a let-down no matter who did it, following on the amazing work by Rudy last issue. But that's not true. It's Dillon who's a let-down, and it's because his style doesn't fit the series so far. The first two issues had art that was very soft, very flowing, very ephemeral. Dillon's style is harder, more grounded. So it's not just that I dislike Dillon's style. It's that Dillon's style is too much a departure from what we've seen already.
Nova was good. Though not enough Kamala. Or Miles, I guess. Mostly Kamala.
Howard is fun. I like Scout. She's fun. She's kinda adorable. Though it turns out she was kind of awful as a human. She clobbered Alicia Masters! No! Why would you do that! Also, Silver Surfer mentions that Dawn is on "Allslott." Cute joke. Also also, Howard longs for his days of "pantsless wisdom." Heh. Also also also, Howard surfs the Guardians' ship. I have to admit, that is awesome. It's a pretty crazy issue.
Iron Man has a cameo from Yukio! Yay Yukio! I do love her. The issue was otherwise good. But as a question, am I the only one who just does not like Mike Deodato's art? I know he's a huge deal. But I don't like his art. I never really have. It just doesn't work for me. Am I alone on this?
Captain America: I love Misty's snarky tweets in the recap page. Even on fake Twitter, Misty Knight is The Best. Also, Viper goes on a rant about Millennials. I love this version of Viper. He is every conservative asshole. And man, this comic is just so fun. D-Man to the rescue, blaring CCR? Hell yeah! A great mix of social commentary and goofy jokes. And like I said, Misty is The Best.
Contest of Champions: Outlaw's fanboyism of Night Thrasher is adorable. There's a little bit of meta-humour with Outlaw saying how big Thrasher was when Outlaw was younger, and Guillotine having no idea who he is and thinking it's a "had to be there" situation. Also, I will never tire of people making fun of the skateboard. Because he rides into battle on a skateboard. That is ridiculous. Either way, this is a really good, interesting issue. Great twists.
Amazing Spider-Man was OK. The best part was Cloak and Dagger telling Spider-Man they never found his banter funny. I'm hoping that, once they stop being Negative's slaves, they say it again.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.Oh god. The rumor
said Thanos would show up. And apparently Marvel want to know who talked...

I always got the impression that Deodato was considered one of the best artists in comics today. Certainly, he's one of the most high-profile, and does a lot of comics that are big deals. But I just don't like his style. I can't get into it at all.
X-Men X-Pert, my blog where I talk about X-Men comics.Captain Marvel #2 was a strange read, and I couldn't pin down why until I considered that the authors are new to comics and used to TV; however, Kris Anka on art really could have helped out. The last page crams a lot of things into not enough panels to properly tell the story, the spectacle of Sasquatch giving CPR to a spaceship happens off-panel...a few weird moments that, on reflection, might have been the authors not realizing that 1. they don't have a budget, and 2. they don't have living, breathing actors to put weight on short moments, and that this weight must be carried with slower storytelling.
The story is solid, though, and the problems are really just hiccups - I am sure the creative team will settle in by the end of the first arc.
A-Force was just flat-out good. I don't know that there's much I can say in specific, it was just really solid.
Avengers #4 (yeah, week behind)...I liked a lot, but man, Waid's starting to feel a little out of touch. The moment of Thor kissing Cap just felt really off, like a bad cliche I have seen too many times before. It felt distinctly dated in a series that is really especially trying to be the hip, youth-oriented flagship of the Marvel Universe.

So I've still been reading through Defenders here, (which is still mostly pretty good, even with Gerber gone,) and I think I've just found Avengers #200 before Avengers #200. It's not the same exact situation as Avengers #200, nor is it as bad, and the storyline takes place over several different issues, but the basic principle of the whole thing's the same.
Basically, the third Red Guardian, formerly a member of the Defenders, was kidnapped by a vain Russian scientist named Sergei (later The Presence,) and brainwashed into becoming his radioactive superpowered consort. (She was a Bad Ass Normal before this.) After forced to fight the Defenders, she manages to break free of the Presence and convinces him to skedaddle after having killed several hundred people in an explosion that gave him and RG superpowers. Later, when Sergei's engulfed by a gigantic mutant caused by radioactive fallout from yet another explosion that he caused well before the one that gave him Superpowers, Red Guardian decides that maybe he's not such a bad guy after all and saves him, and promptly falls in love with him for realz. This is the despite the fact that he still originally captured her and brainwashed her into loving him in the first place, not to mention turning her into a radioactive freak who can't be physically close to most anyone without slowly killing them.
The only thing that makes all this not as bad as Avengers #200 is that the Defenders don't all let her go without giving it a moment's thought, but then again, they didn't even know what was going on with RG when she saved the Presence, so who knows what they would have done if they were there. Bottomline: RG was brainwashed into becoming someone's loveslave and was scarred for life, and yet ends up falling in love with her captor later on anyway. The rest of the storyline leading up to it's ending in #65 was actually fine, but that ending makes it seem like it's a prototype of Avengers #200, unfortunately.
Did 70's and early 80's comic writers think that falling in love with your rapists and brainwashers was a good thing back then, or (more likely,) did they just completely fail to see the unfortunate implications here? Because something was going on for this sort of thing to happen twice.

Ultimatum was clearly not a long planned event. That was clearly a desperate push that failed.
WWH was a storyline for the Hulk book at first that got expanded into a line wide event after the reception to Planet Hulk.
