Marvel Comics General

Go To

This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.

As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.

Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.

  • We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
  • We also have threads for Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Predator and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.

Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.

Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.

Please follow the spoiler policy rules - tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).

    Original text of OP
A thread for all the miscellaneous Marvel discussion that doesn't have its own thread.

So apparently, they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

And for what really? Protecting the interests of a bunch of corpos or ruining the livelihoods of other people because your bosses can’t stand any other country having it good?

Some pointless shit there.

It's supposed to be about protecting national interests. This is of course made more complicated when national interests are increasingly tied to business interests, introducing a profit motive.

It also doesn't help that way too many nations still subscribe to a Zero Sum worldview — ie, nobody can gain anything without someone else suffering.

In the case of Krakoa, it really doesn't help that it's a very young nation whose population has already suffered multiple attempts at genocide.

Speaking of Krakoa…

If there was ever a meta moment in the 2020s that got me to chortle, it'd probably be either Ragman finding Ram V's author notes in Justice League Dark over at DC or Kevin Feige being a guest in the Hellfire Gala. [lol]

Heroes Reborn 6! Zarda doesn’t my really have anything going for her more than being a more violent Wonder Woman… She’s very good at it though. And apparently the Amazon expies from Utopia Island were too because they apparently took trips to the human world to “thin the numbers.” Yeesh.

Zarda lives in the Statue of Liberty with a statue garden of enemies she’s stoned out front. Giantess van Dyne, Tigra, Gorr, Man-Gog, and poor poor Hercules. She uses the Siege Perilous as a booze dispenser after she killed Illyana with a sword made out of Colossus.

She hears a rumbling over in Asgard which is weird because all the gods should be dead between the Ragnarok Wars where all the gods killed each other or when Man-Gog showed up to finish up the survivors by eating Odin.

She finds an angrily sober Thor there. Apparently Odin dunked him on Earth way back during the Viking age and he’s been drunk out of his mind until very recently. They have a fight where Zarda literally punches his beard off but he suddenly remembers everything especially the Avengers and thunderports away. In the backup Echo Phoenix shows up to recruit him.

Heroes Reborn, you can definitely tell WHO the writers like and don't like -

Hyperion gets played fairly sympathetically, but Nighthawk is essentially Crazy Steve, Zarda Bonkers Betty, and Doctor Spectrum is a super-jingoist with a power ring.

So far, we had an introduction in Heroes Reborn #1, and the story has been basically halted since then. The tie-ins do not advance the story, and Heroes Reborn #2 to #6 are basically more tie-ins as well. What else is there? Heroes Reborn #7 and Heroes Return? Is the main story going to be just 3 issues long?

[up][up] I see it as exaggerations of the negative traits and trends of their DC analogues

[up] The “story” has been progressing in the backup stories where Blade and others have been gathering a force to oppose the squadron. The main book story and tie ins have been exploring the AU seeing what’s different and terrible

It’s not typical but it’s been interesting and considering that the squadron have gone pretty undeveloped until now it’s fairly welcome

[up]I still find it interesting that Hyperion is fairly sympathetic in his portrayal when I was flat out expecting Omni-Man or Homelander. Nighthawk got no such sympathy, at least how I read it.

[up]The lack of sympathy to Batman might be due to people being sick of Batman always getting wanked off....but if I recall correctly, this version of Nighthawk is black, so now I'm wondering what these dudes are trying to say exactly.

She uses the Siege Perilous as a booze dispenser after she killed Illyana with a sword made out of Colossus.

I thought Nighthawk's comic was more pitiable because it went all in on the tragedy of the characters mission and how his life basically sucked.

Its not really as hateful compared to Spectrum's issue which turned him into basically a right-wing lunatic with the power of a God.

Leaned way into space cop loyal only to the US military

Although bear in mind basically satan is involved. It’s not just exaggerations of the justice league, it’s ones that would be useful for his purposes

Also Hyperion didn’t get off so lightly considering he threw a billboard at a villain way within his abilities to handle and did a collateral that killed Aunt May. Or that half of Hyperion’s friends actually hate him.

Blur has gotten off the easiest really. His worst thing is a little superspeed adhd and looking the other way for his asshole friends

I would say Zarda is prolly the most insufferable of the lot since her entire issue is basically just “I’m a sadistic blood Knight asshole and I can do whatever I want because no one can stop me.”

Like Hyperion and Nighthawk has some sympathetic or pitiable traits while Spectrum and Blur encountered some level of actual threats in their issues. Rocket gave Spectrum a good enough fight even if he did lost while Blur would have actually died if he didn’t put in the effort to outwit Wanda. Zarda is basically just a gigantic one-note asshole and doesn’t even get punched in the face for it, we instead have to listen to her constant bragging about how unbelievably awesome she is because she’s just a massive narcissist throughout the whole issue.

Also I just now realized something. When DC did the original Dark Nights: Metal event, they also did those tie-in issues showcasing the origins of each of the Dark Knights alongside the main event. Heroes Reborn is essentially what if those tie-in issues were the main crux of the story.

So some other Heroes Reborn expies from the tie-in's:

Punisher winds up more or less becoming the Deadshot. Like it's funny, he's straight up a better guy than the 616 version lol

Misty Knight is definitely the Renee Montoya of the NYPD force. Her and Gwen (who's more of an amalgam of Harley Quinn and Kate Kane), are implied to be an item.

Kingpin is the Amanda Waller of this universe, having become a politician instead of trying to run the mob. Elektra is very much his Rick Flagg.

Yeah the most shocking thing was Gwen actually sharing nothing in common with Barbara Gordon like most of us assumed she would. Like straight up bucking the trend of her being a Daddy's Girl, it was actually her mom who she looks most up to and inspired her to become a Psychologist.

I'm pleased that the Squadron Savage one shot pulled in some of the villain characters from the original Squadron Supreme series to be Kang's lackies.

Late, but re: Beast: there are a lot of relatively recent stories that have portrayed him as a cold and pragmatic-to-the-point-of-amorality genius, a la Ozymandias from Watchmen.

Not sure where this characterization came from but the earliest story I know of that had it was in Ellis’ Astonishing run, with his solution to an inter dimensional invasion explicitly killing not just the invaders but everyone and everything within a ten mile radius of their base.

This was also the arc that had a badly regarded offscreen Face–Heel Turn for Forge, who was collaborating with the invaders in exchange for their help reversing M-Day.

The same run also did an arc where a mutant with absolutely sucktacular "powers" wanted to kill the X-Men for being powerful and hot while he languished in misery digging up Wallflower's corpse and mutating it into a giant organic Sentinel that looked as though it was slapped together from slabs of bloody beef.

...why did it take so long for people to realize there was something "not quite right" with Warren Ellis, again? tongue

Writing a story in which a villain does weird and creepy things isn't the same thing as abusing your authority for sex. Garth Ennis writes way more messed up stuff than Ellis and no one's accused him of anything as far as I know.
