This thread's for talking about the Marvel Comics line, whether the comics are decades old or brand new.
As well as the superhero tales of the Marvel Universe, that also includes all the other things Marvel's done (Epic Comics, Icon Comics, Star Comics and all the rest), as well as the older stories by Atlas and Timely, the companies that later became Marvel.
Acquisitions like Malibu Comics and Miracleman are also on-topic, as are the licensed 20th Century Studios titles, the Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Zoids and Transformers comics, and all of the comics created locally by regional imprints like Marvel UK and Marvel Italia.
- We have dedicated threads for some groups of titles (such as Spider-Man and the X-Men). You can still discuss them here, but you might want to use the more specific threads.
- We also have threads for Indiana Jones
, Star Wars
, Predator
and some of the other franchises. Sometimes it may be more useful to discuss the comics there rather than here — but they're still on-topic and there's no hard rule.
Technically, Marvel's Infinity Comics (and their predecessors, Infinite Comics) are webcomics, not comic books, but it's fine to talk about them here.
Discussions that are only about Marvel adaptations in other media (films, video games etc.) are off-topic, but discussing the differences between the adaptations and the original comics is fine - as long as spoilers for the adaptations are tagged.
Please follow the spoiler policy rules
- tag spoilers for the latest issues, for any previews or content leaks, and for off-topic comics (e.g. if comparing Marvel to a DC story). When including spoiler tags, try to write so that tropers can make an informed decision before viewing them (e.g. which series and issue will they spoil?).
So apparently,
they're making a Black Panther movie. Let's hope Hudlin is kept as far away as possible. On a related note, anyone think that the whole 'Super Hero that is also a King/Ruler' is kind of ridiculous? I mean where do heroes like Aquaman and T'Challa find the time to both lead a nation and go gallavanting on the other side of the globe?

The Phoenix is one of the more convoluted aspects of the MU (it’s entire history is pretty much retcons on top of retcons) and I’m not sure if much of what you’re asking has been definitely answered. I can say that Hope Summers temporarily became White Phoenix at the end of Avengers vs X-Men, so that state isn’t exclusive to Jean.

Alright...
So let's add some perspective to this. Someone influential within the Marvel fandom (and is on a silent steady rise) is creating a collab narrative for Marvel fans. Many fans have already plugged in, and are hyper about it. The one thing the main writer has taken for the most part as her own contribution, is the entirety of the Phoenix.
As @Pizza Dog 11 mentioned, she's stated the Phoenix being overly convoluted, poorly written at times, and straight making little to no sense at all. This is something I agree with too. However, the main change is to either make a non-Grey X-Man take the mantle of Phoenix from the jump... OR (to placate Grey fans) allow Jean to be possessed by the Phoenix Force... HOWEVER, introduce her idea of what she felt the Phoenix Force should have been, but use the X-Man of her choice, bearing the main mantle of "Phoenix" (and would become the central "Phoenix" of the cosmic aspect of the narrative).
The latter option is much more likely the route that will be taken, and in a way, great for those who rather see Jean with the Phoenix Force, BUT now a lot of changes, and changes of interpretation, are being implemented that may (or may not) alter the Phoenix Force's power and plot, not just so the "New" Phoenix would be distinguished, but also, the story's stand out.
I'm asking ALL these questions because for one, I believe in this collaboration, it's a great way to bring fans together, but also, I do want to make sure that tedious details wouldn't be forsaken so new comers into the whole Marvel world, would still have a sense of the original canon. Another important reason is the influential nature of this project. Fans have already banned together to influence the MCU itself, more than once. Something like this, under one influential individual... would be quite a force within the Marvel fandom.
Personally, I don't mind (and actually favor) this new idea of what the Phoenix should be as a hero backed by actual lore; but I want to make sure the actual Phoenix force, would still be represented as per fans would want to see it. That's why I asked those questions about the Phoenix Force.

Anyone else find it amusing that despite reality changing to place them as top dogs of the world, Hyperion and Nighthawk still have experienced absolutely traumatic as fuck shit.
Like Blur and Spectrum are both very content in different ways while Power Princess is unknown at the moment (we'll see how she's doing this week) but Hyperion lost the love of his life as well as the friends he made on the Imperial Guard because of the Brood while not only did Nighthawk gain the futility mindset that plagues modern Batman but he also inherited Spider-Man's Gwen Stacey moment at that.
I feel like Mephisto is playing some kind of sick joke there but I'm pretty curious why Hyperion and Nighthawk specifically get the full brunt of it.

"I am Alpharius. This is a lie."I don’t know about Hyperion but back when we first saw Coulson “programming” the Squadron he said to up Nighthawk’s paranoia and brooding because he’s at his best like that
Likely as a swipe at Batman
So that’s probably why his life sucks in Heroes Reborn

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHank apparently took over Terra Verde with some plants.
And by implication, he's going to plant bug everyone that attends the Hellfire gala.
Thats so Hank.
Edit: How many levels truly separate him from Dark Beast anymore? Out of curiosity.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHe's even outright comparing himself to God in that last page.
As for Dark Beast, the main difference seems to be that Dark Beast enjoys being a manipulative asshole and revels in it. Hank otoh seems to have convinced himself he's doing all of this for "altruistic" reasons. If Dark Beast were still alive he'd be rubbing this into Hank's face.

I keep saying this: in superhero comics, it's only a matter of time before a super genius becomes a ruthless manipulator. They've all done it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."It's especially jarring since Hank's original characterization was that he's a Nice Guy with the soul of a poet, making his codename and physical appearance a case of irony.
Now he's becoming more and more of a true beast.

Disgusted, but not surprisedPart of the problem seems to be Hank's role on Krakoa. He's basically taken on the role of Krakoa's intelligence division. In other words, he's immersed in realpolitik and espionage. It takes a certain degree of self-awareness to fulfill that role without delving into He Who Fights Monsters territory, a self-awareness that Hank seems to lack.

Disgusted, but not surprised

Hey everyone... So in the X-Men forum I discussed a recent collab being done for a Marvel Multiverse which would be animated as I was told, and even seen some secret clips. However, there are some choices that I think could use outside input, as many MANY of the target fans are MCU fans with little to no comic knowledge.
My questions have to do with the X-Men, the Phoenix in particular... before I dive in too deep, I wanna ask a few questions about the Phoenix Force...
1. Does the Phoenix Force have any spiritual power? (not like tapping INTO spirit power)
2. Can another entity have the power to override the Judgment of the Phoenix?
3. Can another entity or “Phoenix” enter the WHR and the Crown, EVEN if the Phoenix Force doesn't want them there?
4. Did the comics ever state that White Phoenix/White Phoenix of the Crown is exclusively an achievement only meant for Jean Grey?
5. Is it possible for there to be a “force" that can manipulate the essence of psionic energy, to the point of disrupting the nexus?
6. IS the Phoenix Force a Phoenix being, OR just the psychic force that simply takes on a Firebird form?
7. Lastly… what does “One True Phoenix” mean, comic wise? I need to know what was the comic canon definition…
