One of the true masters has passed away.

I always loved The Martian Chronicles and as far as I know, no one could match Bradbury in terms of writing short stories.

This is a sad day for science fiction, and for writing in general.

Oh. Rest in peace. I loved the Martian Chronicles as well, and Fahrenheit. Sad to see him go.

Instead, I have learned a horrible truth of existence...some stories have no meaning.

Ray Bradbury was my favorite author ever since I picked up the Martian Chronicles and read Fahrenheit 451 in school. I read most of his short stories and his work has always inspired my own writing.

Rest In Peace, man.

If now is not the time for Manly Tears, there never will be. I do believe I'll go read something now.

Goodbye, Mr. Bradbury. I think I was one of the only kids in my 8th grade class who adored Fahrenheit 451. I'll probably go reread the Martian Chronicles when I get home.

Seriously, this is depressing. He's one of my favorite authors, and now he's gone. And with Terry Pratchett's Alzheimer's, it feels like my favorite book people are disappearing.

[up]: I felt that way when Brian Jacques and Diana Wynne Jones died right next to each other.

Goodbye, and goodnight, good sir. I've always been a little extra fond of you because you grew up in the same city as me. Plus, like a lot of people, The Martian Chronicles was one of those books I had to read for school that I actually enjoyed. Along with all your other stuff.

He will be missed. Only Isaac Asimov compares in terms of the short story, though Bradbury was much better at making characters.

His enthusiasm for storytelling was unmatched.

Anyone know that he was at least partially responsible for the creation of the Addams Family? When he started writing what came to be known as the "Uncle Einar" stories, he thought he'd collect them into a book with illustrations by New Yorker cartoonist Charles Addams. When Addams heard the idea, he was up for it, but Bradbury only wrote the stories sporadically, and never collected them all together until the relatively recent "From the Dust Returned," years after Addams had died. Addams took the idea of a family ofr semi-supernatural oddballs and made it into the Addams Family (first as panel cartoons, which then served as inspiration for the tv series). The scene a the end of the Addams Family film where they go out to the family cemetary to dig up their relatives is lifted straight from Bradbury.

That is a shame. The Martian Chronicles and There will Come Soft Rains were great.

Something Wicked FTW.

Also... The Addams Family? Awesome. Who wants to go watch the movies, now? Seems like a fine tribute. tongue

Wasn't "There Will Come Soft Rains" a part of the Martian Chronicles? I know it's been printed separately, but wasn't it a chapter in the book?

Yeah, in some editions it's included. That's the case with my copy.

I also ought to go dig up my copy of The Illustrated Man and re-read it (and make a work page for it afterwards).

This is certainly a good time to make sure the man's works are fully documented here. Quite an oversight if they aren't.

The Illustrated Man doesn't have its page buts its under Ray Bradbury's page with all his short stories.
