PC World: "AMD shows its Zen processors can compete with Intel's best."
It's still a bit early to say that for sure IMO, but so far, things are looking promising. Hopefully Zen really can compete with current Intel offerings, since real competition has been sorely lacking ever since the Bulldozer fiasco.
Woo, new PC! Now to spend all evening getting my old files from point A to point B...Dell Inspiron "for gaming" according to them, 8 GB main RAM 2 GB VRAM, AMD CPU and GPU. Could probably run PS 360 games which is about all I care for at the moment. Went with Dell because they had an offer for a system with a free TV and I needed one of those too.
Filedrop time!
For some reason, any game I run in fullscreen has an FPS display in the top right corner. C&C 3, Terraria, and FTL all have it, and none had it before today. It looks identical in every game, leading me to believe it's an external program or setting. What would cause this?
Windows 7. Haven't installed any software recently. Add/Uninstall Program lists Firefox as having been installed today (my brother may have done that) but I don't see how that could cause this.
Steam added it in an update and turned it on by default, for some reason.

So... Nvida and updated drivers...I've heard of some Nvida drivers bricking computers or getting them stuck in an infinite loop of POST. I have a new Windows 10 laptop that's been in storage...is it safe to update?
* makes sad puppy eyes *
I tried to walk like an Egyptian and now I need to see a Cairo practor....Zen, unveiled: AMD exposes Zen architecture at Hot Chips 28.
Can't really say for sure, but Nvidia drivers have been fine for me so far (on Windows 10 Anniversary).
No driver issues with nVidia and Win10 here...
"It's Occam's Shuriken! If the answer is elusive, never rule out ninjas!"I just had my laptop's battery replaced today after weeks of it refusing to store a charge above 70% (and discharging from said point to 10% in about an hour, give or take). Any tips for preserving its longevity so that it hopefully won't go down the same way my first laptop battery did?
Some reference - I use my laptop for extensive coding work, some design work using GIMP and Inkscape, and gaming, with Wi-Fi always on at all times. The battery is also nonremovable
, so taking it off while using AC power is out of the question.
Recalibrate your battery by (near) fully draining it and then fully recharging it again every 2 to 3 months will help
. Modern battery lives are no longer compromised by the laptop constantly drawing AC power. Mine would probably struggle to last 30 minutes with all components at full power...
There are even more tips on Lifehacker

I have disagreed with her a lot, but comparing her to republicans and propagandists of dictatorships is really low. - An idiotI found out two things that were being performance hogs on my notebook.
- Windows fast startup was messing with the drivers and putting a lot of junk in the main memory
- Windows was reserving a lot of the memory space to "standby" instead of allocating it to other processes
Turning off the fast startup and using Process Hacker to clear the memory are doing wonders.
Inter arma enim silent leges@GAP: The codecs you mentioned are not only ancient but they all have horrible, horrible compression ratios. The quickest way to compress a video is to download ffmpeg
and encode/transcode the entire thing into the commonplace h264, or if your hardware supports it, h265/HEVC.
