"Karen" is just the latest slang term used to describe this kind of person. There's a long history of black people in the USA coming up with pejoratives to describe entitled white women who sic authorities on black people. Because there's a long history of entitled white women who sic authorities on black people.

Reminds me of how after Gone Girl, some feminists picked up on the "Cool girl" speech to use it as a pejorative term to criticize certain kinds of The Lad-ette who they felt were trying too hard to pander too hard to appeal to cishet men in self-harming ways.
Except it increasingly turned into a way for left-of-center and heavily-online feminist types to demean whatever women they had a personal beef with by accusing them of being insincere Category Traitors, or just being nasty towards GNC women in general. Nowadays the only time I still see it as an insult is from a specific type of online poster poster who engages in a lot of passive-aggressive drama mongering and attempts to bully others via ostracism and throwing shade.
I don't use Tiktok so I have no idea where the "Pick Me" sensation is at or how valid it is, but given the above I wouldn't be surprised if it did wind up there.

It feels so dumb to me because it's very obviously a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-don't situation. Are you conventionally feminine? Are you a tomboy? Are you a little weird? None of it matters because you'll be accused of pandering to cishet men all the same. There is no 'winning' option.
And again, I'm skeptical if women who 'pretend' to be these things to catch male attention was ever that widespread to start with. It smacks of assuming that most women only care about enticing men and nothing else, i.e. textbook sexism.

This.
Also there is the double standard of it only being a problem when we put on a show to try and attract men, when they do the same back its expected behavior.
Maybe there is the fact that trying to appeal to your desired sex occasionaly is just part of being a sexualy active individual.

I haaaaaaaate the concept of a "pick me" girl, to be honest. I've only ever seen it used as a way to dismiss the opinions of women the speaker personally doesn't like and to silence any form of dissent by painting it as a sad attempt to win male approval.

Mur, this is gonna be a weird question, but how common is it for female misogynists to think men can't cook?
I ask because in a novel I'm writing, a character is frequently set up with women who buy into "men can't cook" and "women belong in the kitchen" nonsense.
I, for one, consider culinary proficiency a survival skill.
Withdrawn.
Fair enough, although this does have to do with sexism.

After 15 years, Anita Sarkeesian is shutting down Feminist Frequency
.
I didn't pay much attention to Sarkeesian when she blew up in 2012 but did start looking into it as I paid more attention to Gamergate. It seems that she may have been inaccurate in some aspects but overall acted in good faith. The funny thing is, much of her criticism of female characters in video games seemed rather tame compared to what her haters accused her of.
It's very sad that she was subjected to so much venom and harassment for her work. Especially since she often said this:

I'm starting to feel like I got off really easy regarding my anti-Dirtbag tirades in comparison.

We had two threads that ended up locked because people just couldn't talk about her in a civil way. It's actually kind of hilarious if you look at the last posts in each thread, posted by the same former mod:
Things on the forum have definitely improved since those days, but it's still an embarrassing moment for this community that "Don't be a dick" is apparently a very difficult concept for some people to grasp.
"I squirm, I struggle, ergo I am. Faced with death, I am finally, truly alive."It’s not even that, she got far more hate and abuse than Jack Thompson ever did.
One can view her as anything from a groundbreaking journalist testing unknown water to the return of Jack Thompson and the reaction that came about remain vastly out of proportion for what men in a similar position ever received.

First time I've about 'Pick Me', and just as it's entering the terminal stage of Online Neologism Disease. :V
Makes me curious how 'real' the Pick Me phenomenon ever was in the first place or if it's always been blown out of proportion to attack women and girls who act in ways outside the norm. Like the whole 'fake gamer girl' thing from a while back.
