Alas, poor fishsicles the dorf.

I protest this hatred of aquifers; they are delicious, so long as you stay below or above them as necessary. I even spent most of my turn punching through it so you guys would not have to.

im not entirely against the idea of aquifers.

but then i played one and was more or less fine riiiiight up untill screw pumps failed horribly at getting me below one, and my attempts to use the cave in method lead to my only miner's needless death without succeeding

Well the weather seems to be actively trying to kill the fort now. It has spawned close by the fort three times, twice in a row, and is spawning more frequently. It has killed another dwarf and killed a sneak thief.

And cue potential tantrum spiral due to evil weather death. Dwarven child flipped his shit and attacked the mayor. Then got gang beat into a bloody pulp. Another dwarven child snapped his knee like a twig. A dog chewed on his head and everyone else beat him to death.

Then a patch of evil gloom spawned the fort despite the alert several dwarves were caught in it. This is going to be bad.

Blue: Your dead by the fog. Rotpar: Death by fog.

Now dwarves are defacing artwork.

Ranger went nuts. His kid was the one they put down, his wife died in the fog, and it took the dwarves forever to haul the body to the coffin.

and df crashed -_-. Damn it.

I am tempted to pass it on.

You get to have all the fun...

We should be glad it is not huskfog, though.

I think when my turn comes I will make it a priority to put in place some kind of anti-mist defense. I have a few ideas: one that I think is promising is to pen kittens on pressure plates such that when the mist kills the kitten the pressure plate will release and seal the emergency bulkheads. Can you mark the closest spawn points with notes?

"Spawn point" is more or less every tile on the map. At least, according to my turn and my miscellaneous experience with biomes of evil.

There is no fixed point. It spawns in different locations every time. Also it apparently breaks mechanisms. I was trying to close a door when the fog touched said door it broke it. It apparently bleeds you to death in about 3 ticks. A dwarf got a 1 tick exposure. I was able to examine the poor sod before they died. They were bleeding and faint.

I recovered the save file but I lost all the fun. I did however get the beehives set up, got some additional crap spots going, rooms are well under way, dwarven babies are dying of thirst and being killed by predatory birds their parents piss off.

Industry is well under way. I am thinking of makign a section just for wood burning glass, metal, and clay industry. Also setting up a drowning pit that can be refilled and drained.

I wanted to make a KKP (kinetic kill projectile) tower with statues for ammo but the evil fog has a nasty habit of washing over the work area.

I hope at some point in the future Toady adds cranes. It would make building towers a hell of a lot easier.

Hook it up to a watermill or something, and it lifts your mason and his block right up to the top.

If the damn killer fog wasn't constantly popping up I would have a good start on the tower. As it stands or not in this case I have to settle for shorter drop or just be happy with a drowning pit.

[up][up][up] Only the upper-right half of the map is evil, so I would expect that there would be a safe area in the lower-left corner, although obviously once it spawns it can drift anywhere.

Maybe we just need to breach the caves for wood and then seal off the surface.

It Spawns anywhere on the map. Typically it spawns somewhere along the eastern edge. However I have had it spawn in the west, north and southern portions of the map, spawn right on top of the fort 3 times, or in the general area of the fort. Trust me it is not limited to that corner of the map.

The cloud behaviour is this. It appears on the map anywhere along the Eastern Edge is most common) but it can spawn from the north, south or just a little to the west of the fort entrance, Drifts across the territory in an unpredictable pattern (two most common patterns is a straight line or a curve), either drifts off the edge or disperses.

When I get home I will get a screen shot and do my best to plot the common areas I have seen it spawn.

I will not have much time for play tonight I have a short turn around between shifts and a 12 hour shift Saturday. However I have Sunday off. I will finish up my run Sunday.

Fog Of Doom General appearance locations. The ones that produced the most casualties were obviously the ones that spawned close to the fort.

I can confirm the fog does drift out of the nominally evil northern region into the rest of the map. Maybe we should start keeping track of trajectories as well?

There is something odd going on. Bunch of dwarven children have all hit 0 happiness.

Now they are going raving mad.

I am now getting back to back evil gloom clouds. An elf wandered into it. I checked his injuries and description. He was bleeding out of everything even his fingers.

Giant mosquito just drained a wood cutter.

That dead elf left us a nice hug pile of free cloth :3

Another dwarf has fallen to the gloom.

Two of our key nobles are a booze mistress and a serving wench.

Mining survey found tetrahedrite. Which means copper, silver, and billion.

I think I have the cluster fuck contained. Textile production has taken off, new clothes are on their way, danger room is being built. cage traps are going in. Basic drowning pit has been made so it can fill. It needs to be able to be drained, rooms are made for everyone. Booze production is stable, need more containers though. Industry in general is up. I will finish up either tomorrow evening or Sunday.

Population is currently at 195. Only have had one dwarven caravan and am into the second year.

I am going to dig a second room for a barracks soon so the warriors have a room.

How about no. I am not a Beatles fan. I am not keen on mono weapon squads. I like letting them pick their own weapons so we get some variety.

The Nightmare Continues
  • Curse this hellish location. The foul evil weather that drifts in is frequently lethal. Any living thing caught in the cloud starts gushing blood from all over their body. They are rapidly and horrifically exsanguinated. Several dwarves have met a horrifying end this way.
  • Something has gotten into the children of the fort. Several have started becoming extremely ill tempered and pitching tantrums. One went berserk and was mauled to death by one of the dog packs that roams the fortress interior. Another two went stark raving mad and died of thirst. More deaths.
  • Another death. A hunters child was killed by an Osprey. Horrible wounds made the infant bleed to death.
  • The amount of death is making the others miserable. My friend Fishicles also died not long ago in that horrible fog. I was upset for quite some time. I found solace in private quarters and a lot of booze.
  • The lack of clothing is demoralizing the dwarves. I have started up a textile crop patch to fuel a textile industry. Hopefully we will have clothes before long.
  • The number of naked dwarves is rising. The bare dwarves are becoming ill tempered and adding to a general bad mood.
  • With the threat of dwarves losing their minds I have begun the process of smelting tetrahedrite for the copper and silver ore it contains. Soon we will have weapons and armour for our military dwarves.
  • A training room is being set up to train a squad of dwarves to defend the fort against enemies and from our own insane members. I need to order a barracks dug out for them as the number of immagrants keeps outstripping our ability to provide rooms fast enough.
  • A small ray of good fortune. An Elven caravan of those hypocritical pointy eared ponces showed up. One waltzed right through a thin wisp ofthe deadly fog. A dwarf who saw it said one second the elf was covered in the fog then next he was visible and gushing blood from every orfice and body part. The dumb bastard was heard gurgling for a few seconds before collapsing and dying. The rest of the caravan fled in terror. Good for us the dead elf dropped a huge batch of cloth bins and other assorted goods. Now to get them into the fort.
  • Industry in general is going strong. This is helping me get defenses set up. I have arranged for a pitfall that can be filled with water to drown intruders. I will have to have flood gates secure a drainage route so it can be cleaned after use. Cage traps have been placed at the fighting entrance and the traders entrance to catch enemies who slip through. The fighting entrance route has a pit drop to stop enemies in the path of a catapult that can pelt them with stones and a pop up bridge wall to protect the operator from archers. If possible I will get some weapon traps set up to give enemies pause before they breach our fort.
  • I am nearing the end of my task and shall soon be glad to go back quietly to mining and ingoring the horrors of the outside world.

Actually, from that map, the fog appears to pretty much match the boundary of the evil region. I thought I warned fish to go south and west before digging in!

There are two more new spots just west of the fort. That N/W most one is right at the western edge of the map around the ocean.

The only safe corner is the far south east corner.

On the plus side if the gloomy cloud occurs during a siege it will kill everything that can bleed.

Who watches the watchmen?
#75: May 26th 2012 at 9:33:03 AM

I wonder if it can spawn on constructed floors. If we pave, wall, and roof the current fortress location, and then run a tunnel to a new entrance in the safe corner, it might solve our problems.
