Indiana Republicans vote to increase Dick length

As someone who lives in Indiana, here's a little rain on your parade.

Dick Lugar is one of the last Republicans who isn't just a self-serving party-line machine. Richard Mourdock (he uses Richard officially)'s campaign was pretty much entirely "Lugar occasionally votes with Democrats! He's clearly part of Obama's socialist conspiracy!"

Lugar's campaign pointed out things like Mourdock cheating on his taxes and having lots of big business friends he's already sold out to.

Basically, the last Republican I can respect lost his job.

@TPara: Is there any chance that Mr. Mourdock loses to a Democrat in November?

I think I saw a statistic that said Lugar polled better against a Democrat than Mourdock did. so we can hope.

But hey, more on topic, we are the state that almost named a building after a beloved statesman named Harry Baals.

Here's some irony,

Democrats view Lugar's loss as their best chance of capturing the seat, preferring to go up against a newcomer who spent the primary marketing himself to the far right instead of facing a longtime lawmaker who boasts support from independents and Democrats in the state.

...And I was all ready to blame the Bush Administration, too.

This wasn't the Bush administration's fault; it's the fault of Republican Party strategists such as Karl Rove, who have long advocated tactics that employ anger and other negative emotions to wrest just enough votes to win and leave bitter partisan divides in their wake.

Let's just take a gander at what Senator Lugar had to say about Richard Mourdock:

If Mr. Mourdock is elected, I want him to be a good Senator. But that will require him to revise his stated goal of bringing more partisanship to Washington. He and I share many positions, but his embrace of an unrelenting partisan mindset is irreconcilable with my philosophy of governance and my experience of what brings results for Hoosiers in the Senate. In effect, what he has promised in this campaign is reflexive votes for a rejectionist orthodoxy and rigid opposition to the actions and proposals of the other party. His answer to the inevitable roadblocks he will encounter in Congress is merely to campaign for more Republicans who embrace the same partisan outlook. He has pledged his support to groups whose prime mission is to cleanse the Republican party of those who stray from orthodoxy as they see it.

This is not conducive to problem solving and governance. And he will find that unless he modifies his approach, he will achieve little as a legislator. Worse, he will help delay solutions that are totally beyond the capacity of partisan majorities to achieve.

How's that for an enthusiastic embrace of the new Republican candidate?

I saw part of Lugar's concession speech, but not that part.

Dick Lugar is a classy man. Richard Mourdock? He's a Tea Party Dick.
