Hi!
I´m looking for some info about a certain Italian horror anthology comic.
The first time I came across this one, or rather a picture of one of its covers, was in an article in the Polish comic magazine "Komiks Fantastyka", concerning comic book violence.
The cover reprinted there was this one
and the article also included some other Images, from several other Italian fumetti.
While the linked article explains the source of some of the other imagery (some of the other pictures are taken from notorious titles like "Lucifera" and the like), I never managed to find out anything about "Splatter", certainly mostly because I don´t speak any Italian...
The only things I could half way figure out are that it was published in the 90s by a company named Acme (which really messes up the web search...) and that it was an anthology, somehow similar to "Creepy" or other American horror comics (although possibly a bit gorier than most American fare...).
It (supposedly along with other notorious fumetti) also seems to have brought about a certain amount of concern among parents & the usual moral guardians, about violence in comic books in general.
That´s about all I “know” about this thing. The above mentioned article was a translation from an Italian news paper & consisted mostly of the usual concerned & exaggerated statements about the increase of violence in comics & the catastrophic effect this has to have on the psyche of children, while never even considering that these comics supposedly where targeting an older demographic...
It didn´t mention anything about the source material of the images attached to it (which may or may not have been attached to the text later, by the staff of "Fantastyka", but I can´t say anything about that...).
Since then (I was about 12 or 13 when I saw the above cover scan) that image and the word “Splatter” have strangely fascinated me & triggered my interest for stuff like Italian horror and giallo films and led me to become a huge fan of "Dylan Dog"(which has been published in Germany, where I live, until 2009...).
I have searched the web a few times for any kind of info about the whole thing, but without any results (at least non comprehensible to me...). Every now and then I try again, and only get the usual results in Italian (which is no wonder, since the comic seems to be practically unknown outside of it´s home country...), mostly Italian forum discussions, a few Italian blogs, several cover scans and the occasional Italian online shop.
So, it seems like the series has had some cult following in it´s home country , but is quite impossible to come by outside of Italy. Strangely I have also never come across any scans - not that I haven´t looked, but since I don´t speak any Italian I might have looked the wrong way, although I doubt that (but let´s not discuss that on the forum – just send me a message if you´d want to help me with that...).
So, although the series seems to have been rather tacky and I don´t expect it to be more than a quite gory "Creepy"-clone, I´d still lilke to know a bit about it – about it´s place in the world of Italian comics...well, you know, the kind of stuff people who read TV tropes are interested in...
