So, I had a few questions about country backstorys. Since everyone's split from a Roman Empire, I'd assume slavery was a big thing, but would it be possible to say that your nation already abolished it? Or pay an up-front cost to do so? I'm trying to go for a socially Libertarian vibe (with a bit of the USSR and 1776 thrown in for the hell of it, even though they might seem like polar opposites), and owning the rights to another person seems like one of the major things they'd be against.

Well, a few things:

  1. You may have noticed that the geography is slightly different (and the history, as indicated by the fact that it's the Second Roman Empire and not the Byzantine or Holy Roman Empires). This is an alternate universe, so there's no guarantee that things evolved the same way, culturally speaking.
  2. Even if they did, the time period we're using has had technological innovations (combined with lax OSHA laws and cheap labor) render slave work not only unpopular but unnecessary. IIRC in real life by this time slavery was either dying out or dead outside of the Southern US.

So in summary, it's likely slavery wasn't around in the first place for some time.

By the early 1800s, which is the rough equivalent of the game's start time, the only places actual slavery was used in were agricultural: Brazil and the West Indies for sugarcane and tobacco, cotton in the US south, et cetera, plus Algerine galleys. Of course, serfdom was still alive and well in Russia, although serf revolts in the name of the Tsar were common, and peasant living conditions varied across the world. But actual slavery existed only under limited circumstances.

Say, I noticed you mentioned "militia battalions" when describing perks, but the only mention of militias in the rules is listed under "Emergency Defenses".

terminology mixup, sorry. I believe what the perk means is that you get more basic (unequipped, untrained) battalions in that province, whereas the province upgrade means that the province can put up a fight if invaded.

Confirmed. Game topic is up and running. Gentlemen, start your engines wield supreme executive power! (The excuses for doing so can be anything from coup d'etat to popular vote to the fact that some watery tart threw a sword at you.) Regardless, get out there and rule!

I wrote up a bit of fluff for everyone and tried to incorporate things from your profiles into it. Feel free to correct something if you so wish.

[up][up]Does that mean you want a backstory post? A post along the lines of "the peace-loving workers of the Xarkan Collective...". Or a numerical IP report like the one Wysp had in the sign-up - would something along these lines work, or is something wrong with it?:

Aside from having Aquileon as one of your provinces, that looks just fine. However, I do suggest actually writing a quick IC about it. Doesn't have to be anything fancy if you don't want to, just saying what you're working on and stuff.

Also, remember that your first two colonies come free of penalty.

[up]Damn, there goes my coup d'étatcool - yeah, perils of copy/paste.

In any case, I went ahead and moved it out into the main thread - now to see what happens.

Hey hotelkilo, any interest in establishing trade relations between your Grand Duchy of Laurette and the Atlantazonians?

I thought we could only colonize one province at a time, even if they are free. Could we send out two?

My impression was that the first two were effectively free.

As a heads up, my first post will probably be very late tonight (11:00-12:00 EST) since I have to go start an evening/night shift in about 1/2 hour.

SJ is correct: your first two are granted with no penalties. After that, you may only plant one colony for every three non-Outpost provinces you have.

-Just a quick question: do we start with Basic Battalions, or Conscript Battalions?

Hey Nman, seeing as we're about to be neighbors, you want to open up trade relations?

[up]Don't see why not. I mean... let me grab something appropriate from my box of words... alright... *ahem*.

I refer to them as Conscripts because that's basically what they are. As long as you get the idea that they have Basic level equipment and Conscript Training (IE the bare minimum to put them on the field) and you make that clear in your references to them I don't really care what you call them.

EDIT: [up] You'll need to meet in-game first. :P

Sorry if this information is shown in the sign ups and I just missed it, but what do those dates next to the country names represent, and how are they determined?

...Er? What dates?

If you're referring to the Province numbers, it tells me which number on the map the proper name is referring to so I can change it.

Speaking of which, anyone who'se claimed a province so far should probably give it a name so I can put 'em on the map.

Oh, those. That tells when the province grows into a larger province, higher up the list (you can find this on the ruleset).

I'll update the map as soon as I hear from Sabre re: anyone running into locals.
