I had the pleasure of looking at one of the books written by him, and this book is titled The God Project. It takes place in Eastbury, Massachusetts. Kids are dying of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), as well as going missing and turning up dead. One protagonist, Sally Montgomery, is sure that her baby girl did not die of SIDS. Another protagonist, Lucy Corliss, finds that her son Randy has mysteriously disappeared and she is trying to find him.
What the protagonists find out is that their children were secretly being surveyed by CHILD (Children's Health Institute for Latent Diseases) without consent. Apparently, CHILD has been tampering with ovaries by putting in a special hormone to create extra ordinary human beings....human beings with an extraordinary capacity to regenerate and are immune to electrocution, burning and other mishaps. The Department Of Defense and the military want to use this research to make super soldiers, and ensure complete dominance on the battlefield.
The ending is basically a Downer Ending in which The Bad Guy Wins. Or so it seems. The surviving protagonists took in the two boys who are successful results of the CHILD program. Unfortunately, the two boys have taken on A God Am I mentality, because they are convinced that they cannot die. The protagonists try using a special kind of poison to kill them, but it fails. The boys pretty much laugh in their faces for their attempt, and the book ends there.
This book was written 1982 or 1983, and it goes into genetics, which I can tell you was not a big topic at the time!
John Saul is a horror and suspense writer, and he can be compared to Dean Koontz and Stephen King.
