For the record, this is what the manga panels look like when cropped and at wiki size:

While it's clearer that he's making it from the ground, it's not clear that the spear and the ground are made of the same things. As [up] said, maybe the anime has a better version? Wish I could help, but the series never held my attention for very long.

[up] Well, it should be episode 1 of the first anime, and episode 3 of Brotherhood, if that helps any.

The image isn't perfect but I say KUPIS. Maybe a two panel of the same scene or mid-transmutation.

[up] He is pulling it out of the ground - but also using the ground as the material to make it in the first place. Is the second part unclear? Because that'd be an issue.
