After 106% completing Crash 4, I thought how I would have changed the game's progression:

  • First, get rid of N. Sanely Perfect Relics. Vicarious Visions understood that no-death get-everything runs weren't cool when remaking the first game, no reason Toys For Bob couldn't follow that rule.
  • Get rid of the Wumpa Gems. You'd have to go out of the way to miss them when breaking every crate, so that just means all they do is artificially inflate the player's sense of progress toward completion.
    • To keep Wumpa Fruit useful, costumes are now tied to them instead.
  • Require only Gold Relics for the bonus ending. For most players, practicing to get the Platinum Relics will either massively inflate the time spent on playthroughs or else kill runs entirely. If someone thinks gold relics would be too easy for the reward, they can tighten the time requirements, I guess, but only a little.
  • Bring back the speed shoes and get rid of the triple spin. 'Nuff said.
  • Make all timeline levels comparable to the levels that introduce the playstyles in length, and have them end where you originally switch control. The cutscenes can be a bit expanded to show the Bandicoots' reactions if the lack of switching over makes the level disconnect.
  • Only tie one gem per level to N. Verted mode, which could be breaking all the crates or just getting to the end.
  • Keep only one hidden gem per level, and choose one for it that isn't too devious from either the original version or the original N. Verted version, or place a new one if needed. I'm counting "too devious" as hidden above the top of the screen when there's nothing encouraging a bounce, anything that requires navigating to terrain that looks out of bounce, and ones like the mess that is in Run It Bayou. Seriously, whose idea was that one?
  • Unhide all crates. I'm considering hidden crates to be those with something between them and the camera, unless they're in a tunnel with an obvious entrace for example, and those off the top of the screen when there's nothing obvious to bounce on.
  • Keep flashback tapes in the levels that originally had them, but give them three deaths instead of one, and move some of the later ones to earlier points in their respective levels.

Anything anyone disagrees with?

There's no reason to cut the dev relics. Its just an extra challenge on top of the challenges already present.

[up]I never said anything about cutting the developer relics, though, just not requiring platinum for 106% completion.

Are those not the N. Sanely Perfect Relics? That was your first bullet. Or is that the no-death one? No death gems make sense to me. They're like training for relic runs.

[up]N. Sanely Perfect relics are no-death all-crate runs. Doing either on their own is fine, but they're a real pain to get both at the same time with how dangerous some paths to some crates are. Especially the ones with mount.

Eh. Crash has always been chokablok with hard optional crap. Most of this is that, but more.

From what I get, the problem people have with that is that the levels are MUCH longer than in the original trilogy, making these challenges more of a pain.

I want to give Crash Team Racing (Nitro Fueled) a try to at least put a Crash game into my library and experience it. My concern is that I tried it playing a demo and did very badly. I not only finished last, it was by a long shot. Of course I was using a Playstation control which I wasn't used to yet.

I've improved in Mario Kart, by learning about boosts. Story mode aside (which I'd like to finish), how does this differ from Mario Kart?

The boost system is a lot more involved than Mario Kart and that's where most of the challenge comes from. The gist of it is, you want to chain drift boosts pretty much all the time to keep them going. This will also keep the boosts from turbo pads going, which are faster. It can be pretty hard to master, but once you do you can leave the AI in the dust, especially on tracks with super turbo pads (which is hard to control but extremely fast).

There are some other more advanced techniques as well, though you won't really need those unless you want to beat the hardest time trials. I'd highly recommend looking into some guides if you get the game. The skill floor and ceiling are both higher than Mario Kart, for better or worse. So, if you want a more challenging experience, it's great, go for it. If you want something more casual though, it's not the best.

Another key difference from is that the karts feel a lot heavier to control, which will take some adjusting to if you're used to Mario.

People are speculating it's a tease for an E3 Smash reveal.

People are always speculating that something is a hint for a Smash reveal.

It's probably something else. It wouldn't make sense for them to be voice acting for a character going to be revealed and presumably released so soon, and Nintendo seems very determined to keep the DLC fighters secret. Crash could still be a Smash reveal at E3, but the voice actors are almost certainly not teasing it.

Smash fans are always too self-centered and we are probably getting something new, probably related to wumpa league.

I reckon a lot of people are still upset over what happened with Toys for Bob.

If you do get CTR, dont feel bad about having difficulty on the learning curve. I lost the first race on the first track when I first played it. It takes some getting used to. But I'd argue it's the best kart racer on the market.

If there was a new Crash game in the works, who'd be making it? Both Vicarious Visions and Toys for Bob got absorbed by the big CoD.

[up] I dunno...Treyarch?

I mean, not all of these Activision studios have to be busy with Call of Duty, right?

Oh, and FYI, Vicarious Visions was absorbed into Blizzard.

I’d argue that neither of them should have been absorbed into Blizzard or Call of Duty.

Do we still have the studio who did Nitro Fueled?

Cripes, I rarely use heavy weights in Mario Kart. How fast is Crash? I should be fine if it isn't 200cc.

[up]The system isn't really comparable. Crash has difficulty levels, which provide a direct bump to the speed of CPU karts, but the player's speed is unaffected. Instead, how fast the player goes is dependent on sustaining boosts from turbo pads and powerups. This isn't necessary on the lower difficulties, and conversely used effectively it makes even the highest difficulty CPU feel like they're using 50 CC compared to a 150 or even 200 CC player.

It only really matters in the hardest time trials and PVP, though.

N. Sane Trilogy, CTR: Nitro Fueled, and 4: It's About Time are being sold as a bundle on Nintendo Switch only.

US$60 for the full bundle, US$42 without CTR.

Interesting that it's only on Switch, you'd think this would go to Playstation first. Still, would definitely be a ridiculous deal if I didn't already have all the titles.
